Laura Delgado Bejarano
I am an Agricultural Engineer (National University of Colombia, 2021) and currently an M.Sc. candidate in Agricultural Engineering at FEAGRI-UNICAMP, Brazil. My research in Digital Agriculture focuses on developing interpolation models for low-density soil-fertility sampling scenarios. I work with soil sampling, spatial image analysis, spatial variability, soil–yield correlations, interpolation methods, and erosion modeling using remote-sensing data.

In precision agriculture (PA), the evaluation of soil spatial variability to optimize crop management requires dense sampling. This costly activity often results in sparser sampling grids and may compromise both map quality and the return on variable rate fertilizer applications. This study evaluated whether the choice of interpolation method influences the quality of fertilizer prescription maps under sampling limitations. In two areas with different amounts of samples and degrees of spatial dependence, the interpolation of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) contents was evaluated using deterministic methods (TPS, IDW) that consider mathematical functions based on distance, stochastic methods (OK, KED) that consider the spatial autocorrelation of the data, and machine learning methods (SVM, RFSI) that learn complex relationships. TPS demonstrated superior performance in predicting content, and the agreement of fertilization classes (Lin’s correlation coefficient and Kappa’s agreement index were higher). However, considering the recommendation classes, the differences between the methods were reduced. Thus, if this approach to creating recommendation maps is adopted, the interpolator can be selected based on the simplicity of the method, with TPS being a promising alternative.

  • Stress Evaluation Using Finite Elements in a Manual Agricultural Tool

This study addresses the imperative need for efficient hand-held agricultural tools, particularly in challenging contexts like hillside agriculture, by focusing on the redesign and evaluation of a manual tillage tool. The objective is to comprehensively assess the stress and fatigue life of a redesigned tool, considering different manufacturing materials such as steels (AISI/SAE 4140, 4130, 1060), A356 aluminum, and nodular cast irons. Employing finite element method simulations and the Von Mises equation, this research confirms an optimal performance within elastic limits for all materials, mitigating the risks of plastic deformation or breakage during normal operation, with Von Mises stresses ranging from 8.39 to 16.30 MPa. All the tools yielded optimal results, meeting the critical requirements for soil penetration resistance, reporting no fatigue failures, and exhibiting useful life values over 1.75 x 1013 years. In terms of ergonomics, A356 aluminum stands out, as it is less heavy and implies a lower effort by the operator, promoting efficient tillage without compromising comfort. This research provides nuanced insights for the design of agricultural tools, emphasizing the harmonious balance between efficiency, longevity, and operator comfort in sustainable practices.
  • SOIL EROSION BY HAND TOOLS FOR SMALL-SCALE TILLAGE ON HILLSLOPES ASSESSED THROUGH THE UNIVERSAL SOIL LOSS EQUATION
Laura Delgado Bejarano, Hugo González Sanchez, Dario Castañeda Sánchez
Chilean Journal of Agricultural and Animal Sciences, 2023
The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the erosion rates generated by two types of hand tools for small-scale tillage on a hillslope, using experimental tests and the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). The hand tools evaluated were a conventional hoe and a redesigned furrowing hoe. The experimental work was conducted in a 145 m2 plot with an average slope of 45% in Colombia. Three treatments were evaluated: a) Zero tillage and no herbicide (control); b) tillage with a conventional hoe plus herbicide; c) tillage with a furrowing hoe plus herbicide. Each treatment was represented by a sedimentation plot, using three repetitions in blocks (lower, middle, and upper parts of each plot), according to the maximum slope gradient. Both hand tillage tools generated high to extremely high erosion rates with differences of up to 8.1 times between them. Both types of tools accelerated soil erosion rates, being higher in furrowing hoe tillage. The USLE method showed no differences in erosion rates between the tillage methods, while differences were found in the experimental tests. This is explained by the lower sensitivity of the USLE to detect small-scale changes in factors such as soil type, cover, and slope.
  • Conversion model of soil pH values with two extraction matrices in Urabá, Colombia

    Acta Agronomica, 2023
  • RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOIL ACIDITY AND PRODUCTIVITY OF BANANA (Musa spp.) IN URABÁ, COLOMBIA

Chilean Journal of Agricultural and Animal Sciences, 2023
Soil acidity plays an important role in the productivity of export bananas as it affects nutrient availability and phytotoxicity depending on soil pH. The objective of this research was to evaluate the relationship between soil pH and banana productivity in Uraba, Colombia. The study was conducted at the Ramiro Jaramillo Sossa experimental station, Banana Research Center (Cenibanano), Urabá, Antioquia. The sampling grid consisted of 110 points. Determination of pH was conducted in situ, and soil samples were processed in the laboratory using two solutions: distilled water and KCl. Significant differences were found between the solutions, aluminum extraction and field sampling. Additionally, the presence of Al3+ was confirmed in the pH range H2 O 5.5. Finally, the pH values were pH KCl pH H2 O pH in-situ. The latter best explained the behavior of bunch weight, indicating that in situ determination of pH better reflects the real conditions of this variable, with a greater relationship with productivity.
