- The role of visual imagery and verbal coding in short-term memory conjunctive binding: evidence from aphantasia
Emma Delhaye, Pauline Fritz, Charlotte Martial, Christine Bastin
Consciousness and Cognition, 2026
• Conjunctive binding allows to form and maintain integrated, complex, representations in memory from a series of object features. • The mechanisms underlying conjunctive binding in visual short-term memory are not fully understood yet. • We explored the role of (1) verbalisation and (2) visual imagery in conjunctive binding by testing aphantasic participants and typical imagers. • The ease to use of verbal coding impacted both performance and confidence, in a similar way for aphantasics and typical imagers. • Even for difficult-to-label trials, aphantasics performed well above chance. They might have relied neither on imagery nor on verbal coding. Conjunctive binding − as opposed to relational binding − refers to our short-term memory for integrated representations of a series of features into a complex − unitized − object. The mechanisms necessary to encode conjunctive representations in memory are, to date, unknown. In this study, we tested whether mental visual imagery and verbal coding are necessary to encode conjunctive representations in short-term memory. We also explored the memory processes supporting retrieval of these representations. To explore specifically the role of visual imagery, we tested a population of aphantasic participants (N = 29) that we compared with typical imagers (N = 49), as assessed by the VVIQ. To assess the role of verbal coding, we had participants memorise colour-shape conjunctive representations while manipulating the ease with which labels could be used to define the shapes. Results showed a robust effect of the use of verbal coding on performance and confidence ratings, accompanied by an increase in both automatic and controlled memory processes. There was however no difference between aphantasics and typical imagers on these measures. In addition, even in the difficult-to-label condition, aphantasics performed well above chance, suggesting that neither visual imagery nor verbal coding are necessary to perform conjunctive binding. This supports the idea that binding is automatic, and the existing hypothesis according to which the first stage of conjunctive binding is implicit. It is possible that aphantasic participants used implicit representations, unavailable to their phenomenological experience, to solve the task, or non-visual spatial or sensorimotor strategies. - Reply to ‘Recalled experiences of death: need for empirical research without prejudice’

Disorders of consciousness (DoC), including unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS) and minimally conscious state (MCS), have limited treatment options and are characterized by low complexity of brain activity. Recent research suggests that psychedelic drugs, which enhance the complexity of brain activity, could offer promising therapies. Here, individualized whole‐brain computational models are developed for patients with DoC, optimized with empirical functional magnetic resonance imaging data and diffusion‐weighted imaging data, upon which the administration of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin is simulated. An in silico perturbation protocol is applied to assess brain dynamics, first distinguishing between different states of consciousness, including DoC, anesthesia, and the psychedelic state. Then, brain dynamics are assessed before and after a simulation of psychedelic drugs on patients with DoC. Findings indicated that the simulation of LSD and psilocybin shifted the brain activity of patients with DoC closer to criticality (the point at a phase transition between order and chaos), with a greater effect in patients in the MCS. In patients with UWS, the treatment response correlated with structural connectivity, while in patients in the MCS, it aligned with baseline functional connectivity. These results offer a computational foundation for using psychedelics in DoC treatment and highlight the potential future role of computational modeling in drug discovery and personalized medicine. - Editorial overview: Consciousness on the borders of life and death

Purpose Survivors from acute life‐threatening conditions occasionally report various alterations in subjective experiences, ranging from visual perceptual changes to multi‐faceted phenomena that can be categorized as near‐death experiences (NDEs). We report an NDE in a 73‐year‐old woman with an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, requiring emergency intubation and mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory failure. Method The patient suffered from profound hypoxia and hypercapnia with uncompensated respiratory acidosis. Prehospital anesthesia was induced with an intravenous bolus of 500 mg of ketamine administered over 60 s, corresponding to 7 mg/kg of adjusted body weight. The patient eventually recovered and was weaned from ventilator after 24 h. Semi‐structured interviews, including several standardized scales assessing potential subjective experience and post‐event impact, were conducted at 2 weeks and 2 months post‐event. Finding Findings revealed a vivid NDE (i.e., meeting the NDE Content scale criteria, with total scores of 34/80 and 32/80 at the first and second interviews, respectively), notably characterized by feelings of peacefulness and well‐being, encounters with entities, and the perception of a bright light. Over time, the narrative evolved, with some elements no longer recalled at follow‐up, while the patient reported a positive psychological transformation, including improved mood and increased empathy. Conclusion This case, set within its medical and pharmacological context, provides a unique opportunity to study NDEs and their precipitating context. The reported transformations underscore the importance of recognizing NDEs for their possible long‐term effects on patients and relevance to medical practice. - Reply to ‘Limitations of neurocentric models for near-death experiences’

Background: Rising stress levels have led to increased interest in stress management tools, particularly tactile breathing devices. Despite their popularity, there is limited evidence on their physiological and psychological effectiveness and user perceptions. This study evaluates the effectiveness of and preferences toward two tactile breathing devices among highly stressed individuals. Methods: The study involved 36 participants using two breathing devices, moonbird and Core. Physiological data were collected using EEG, ECG, and a breathing belt. User preferences and self-reported experiences were assessed via questionnaires. Results: Moonbird usage was associated with increased delta power and decreased alpha power, while Core did not significantly modify EEG power. ECG analysis indicated no significant differences in mean heart rate between devices. Both devices reduced heart rate variability during use, but no lasting effects were observed post-intervention. Respiratory rates decreased during both devices' use, with moonbird showing more sustained effects post-intervention. There were no significant differences in self-reported relaxation and energy levels between the devices, though moonbird was preferred overall for its handling and breathing guidance. Conclusion: Both devices demonstrated the ability to lower physiological stress, as indicated by improvements in certain neurophysiological measures during use, with moonbird preferred for its ergonomic design and tactile feedback. These findings underscore the importance of user experience in device effectiveness, highlighting the need for a user-centric approach in device design. Future research should explore long-term effectiveness, real-world user feedback, and the physiological and psychological mechanisms associated with these devices. - A neuroscientific model of near-death experiences
