    Chemistryselect, 2025
Carbon dots (CDs), as emerging nanomaterials, have garnered significant attention due to their unique optical properties and versatile biomedical applications. In this study, we report a facile and eco‐friendly microwave‐assisted carbonization method to synthesize fluorescent CDs from Justicia adhatoda leaves, a renewable biomass resource. The resulting CDs exhibited strong fluorescence with an emission peak at 381 nm and a quantum yield of approximately 9.8%, along with excellent water dispersibility and biocompatibility. Morphological analysis revealed an average particle size of approximately 2.08 nm. The antimicrobial potential of these CDs was evaluated against multiple bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, demonstrating dose‐dependent broad‐spectrum antibacterial activity at 80 µg/mL. Additionally, the CDs showed significant antifungal effects against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger at comparable concentrations. Cytotoxicity assessment against HepG2 liver cancer cells revealed an IC50 value of 9.69 µg/mL, indicating promising anticancer efficacy. This work highlights the potential of biomass‐derived CDs as multifunctional nanomaterials for antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer applications, advancing their prospects in nanomedicine.

In this study, zero-dimensional fluorescent carbon dots were synthesized from affordable organic bio-precursors derived from chayote seeds using a one-pot microwave-assisted carbonization process. These biomass-derived carbon dots display excellent fluorescence properties, with an average size of approximately 3.3 nm and a fluorescence quantum yield about 9.56 %. The fluorescence emission spectra were recorded at different excitation peaks, with the highest intensity emission peak observed at 387 nm with an excitation wavelength of 320 nm. These carbon dots effectively detect Fe3+ ions, with a detection limit of 4.5 µmol. Carbon dots show strong catalytic reduction activity against a reduction of Methylene Blue dye, achieving an 81 % reduction in a short period. These biomass-derived carbon dots presents sustainable and promising option for applications in metal sensing and catalytic degradation.

  • A new route: Electro oxidation of dithionite industrial effluent and recovery of caustic using electrochemical membrane cell

Journal of Water Process Engineering, 2020
Mixture of sodium thiosulfate and sodium formate contaminated effluent is produced by sodium dithionite industry, which was treated by electrochemical oxidation process. Platinised titanium (Ti/Pt) mesh and titanium (Ti) mesh were used as anode and cathode respectively. Nafion 961 cation exchange membrane was used as ion exchanger and acted as separator in the membrane cell. The investigation was done by potentiostatic mode (3.0 V). The cyclic voltammetry (CV) study revealed the oxidation potential of thiosulfate and formate. About 95.44 % of sulfate conversion was achieved and 70 % formate was mineralised by this new route. Dispersed sulfur particles were noticed in anolyte compartment and complete thiosulfate conversation was confirmed using UV–Vis spectroscopy and volumetric estimation. Besides, caustic was recovered by this process.
  • A hybrid treatment process for product recycling from tannery process effluent and soak liquor
Karthikeyan Chandrasekaran, Hosimin Selvaraj, Hema Sindhuja George, Maruthamuthu Sundaram, Thaj Mohammed Khaleel
Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering, 2020
The sulfate rich saline tannery effluent (SRSTE) was treated effectively using halophilic bacterial pretreatment followed by electrochemical oxidation (hybrid treatment). Aerobic degradation was done using halophilic bacterial consortia isolated from the tannery soak effluent, resulted in 76 % COD removal after 6 days. The remaining COD was reduced by electrochemical oxidation (EO). In electro oxidation process (without aerobic pretreatment), 24 h of electro-oxidation was needed to complete COD removal. The process efficiency was analysed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The reduction of sulfate could not be noticed in presence of halophilic bacteria in aerobic treatment. The energy consumption for COD removal was about 0.343 and 0.020 kW h/g1 in electrochemical oxidation and hybrid treatment process respectively. Besides, chloride loss was also higher in EO when compared to hybrid approach. Hybrid treatment process was proved to be an effective method for treating SRSTE. The mixed salt was recovered and used for dyeing purpose.
  • Removal of sulfide and recycling of recovered product from tannery lime wastewater using photoassisted-electrochemical oxidation process
Hosimin Selvaraj, Priyadharshini Aravind, Hema Sindhuja George, Maruthamuthu Sundaram
Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, 2020
Investigation and optimization of photoassisted electro-oxidation process for removal of high concentration of sulfide and COD from tannery lime wastewater was done. Electro oxidation process with UV-light were evaluated with different current densities such as 15, 20, 25 mA/cm2 with cylindrical electrodes (MMO and Ti sheet). 100% sulfide, 92% of COD and 70% total organic carbon (TOC) were effectively reduced by the current density of 25 mA/cm2 in the photo-assisted electrochemical oxidation process. In Electro-oxidation process alone, the COD and TOC were not reduced effectively. Water/mixed salt (47% Na2SO4 and 53% NaCl) were recovered and reused for dye fixation process.
