Pediatric foot anthropometry and its correlation with growth assessment Willy Barinem Vidona, Titilayo Opeyemi Bolaji, Collins Nduka Esomchi Scientific Reports, 2026 Foot dimensions, particularly length and width, are essential anthropometric parameters often used in health, ergonomics, and footwear design. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between foot dimensions, age, and height among children aged 4 to 12 years in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted with 389 children, randomly selected from schools and community centres. Data were collected using standardised anthropometric measurements, including foot length, foot width, and height, ensuring accuracy and consistency. Pearson’s correlation and independent t-tests were used to examine relationships among variables and to identify sex-based differences. Descriptive statistics revealed variations in foot dimensions across the age groups, with a mean foot length of 19.49 cm and a mean foot width of 6.87 cm. Foot length showed moderate-to-strong correlations with age in younger children (overall r = 0.549, p < 0.001) and a strong correlation with height (r = 0.652, p < 0.001), while foot width exhibited weaker positive correlations with age (r range 0.254–0.513) and height (r = 0.233, p < 0.001). No significant sex differences were observed (all p > 0.05). The findings highlight the progressive changes in foot dimensions with age and height and their potential applications in pediatric health, footwear design, and ergonomic planning.
The Influence of Mushroom on the Taphonomic Process of Cadaver Willy Barinem Vidona, Charles Oluwaseun Adetunji, Charity Willy‐Vidona Mushroom Biotechnology for Improved Agriculture and Human Health, 2025 The relationship between corpse taphonomic processes and mushrooms is the subject of a multidisciplinary study at the nexus of soil microbial science and forensic science. With concern about post-mortem periods and the complex dynamics of cadaver decomposition, this study explores the microbiological properties of soil fungus, namely the mushroom fruiting from burial sites, and investigates their potential as indications for forensic interpretations. The process by which cadavers decompose is essential to the cycling of nutrients and energy transformation in ecosystems. Both living and non-living factors have a complex impact on the intrinsic mechanisms of decay. Species of mushrooms, including unique genera like Penicillium, Aspergillus, Candida, and Mucor, have been identified as major contributors to the various stages of decomposition; and have been isolated from preserved bodies in archaeological investigations. The presence of certain species of mushrooms near cadaver burial sites and the relationship between particular mushrooms and decomposing remains illustrate the potential role that mushrooms may play in forensic interpretations. Notably, the quantity and timing of mushrooms, as well as their presence in the area carry significant relevance in estimating the taphonomic processes and post-mortem intervals. The research examines into the phylogeny of fungi, with a focus on mushrooms, which are the most widely known form. In the lack of a complete fossil record, molecular phylogenetic investigations, together with biochemical features and archaeological evidence, help determine evolutionary relationships. In addition, the study highlights the taphonomic process of mushrooms by describing the changes that occur in the surrounding environment when corpses are released into the natural environment. This study's result emphasizes the significance of mushrooms as markers in forensic taphonomy, which helps with post-mortem interval estimation and burial site identification. The development rates of fungal spores and species are controlled by temperature and humidity conditions, despite the fact that fungi are known to be important micro-agents in cadaver decomposition also highlights the need for environmental factors in forensic investigations by this work.
Assessment of the Demographic Burden of Epidemics and Diseases within the African Sub-Region: A Review of Recent Epidemiological Data, Responses, and Resultant Psychosocial Risk Tendencies Willy Barinem Vidona, Charity Willy-Vidona, Lekpa Kingdom David, Bassey Monday Abia, John Nwolim Paul, Ukpai Agwu Eze Hygiene, 2024 Background: Over the past few decades, epidemic outbreaks and disease occurrences have become more frequent and widespread in Africa, posing challenges for poor countries in the region and impacting vulnerable populations. Limited resources, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, socioeconomic inequalities, malnutrition, mass gatherings, and lack of proper sanitation and hygiene contribute to Africa’s high burden of epidemics and infectious diseases such as cholera, measles, monkeypox, Ebola viral disease, and COVID-19. This paper reviewed epidemic outbreaks and diseases transmitted through intimate contact in Africa and their impacts on vulnerable populations. Methods: A narrative review approach was adopted to gather and analyze the relevant literature on epidemic outbreaks in African sub-regions. The review encompassed causes, transmission patterns, demographic impact, community susceptibility, preventive measures, and psychosocial risk-taking behaviors. Results: This study emphasizes the importance of addressing the causes of response lapses and the resulting human, material, and economic losses in the region. Effective preventive measures include disease surveillance, early mitigation strategies, contact tracing, personal protective measures, improved political and public health leadership, and socioeconomic equity. However, the review highlights challenges in implementing these measures effectively due to limited resources, delayed detection, and difficulties in scaling up response solutions. Conclusions: There is a need for a comprehensive approach involving health departments, infrastructure development, and addressing socioeconomic factors.
