Journal of Applied Pharmaceutical Research, 2025
Background: In its crystalline form, probucol has an extremely low bioavailability and is a poor water-soluble drug. The main aim of this study was to enhance the solubility and dissolution rate of probucol by using a solvent evaporation method to develop a solid dispersion that contains polyvinyl pyrrolidone K30 (PVP-K30) and polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000). Methodology: The solvent evaporation method is considered superior to other techniques for preparing solid dispersions due to its ability to achieve uniform drug distribution at the molecular level. This method ensures homogeneity by dissolving the drug and carrier in a common solvent, reducing the risk of drug recrystallization and enhancing solubility and bioavailability. Result: The drug-to-carrier ratio is the determining factor for dissolution enhancement. The FTIR spectra do not suggest any chemical interaction between PVP-K30 or PEG 6000. The immediate release profiles of both formulations were favourable, with F3 releasing approximately 95.31% of the drug and F6 releasing around 86.77% within 2 hours. This indicates a rapid drug dissolution, which is beneficial for achieving a fast onset of action and enhancing bioavailability. Conclusion: The solid dispersion formulations F3 & F6 successfully transformed crystalline probucol to an amorphous state, enhancing solubility & dissolving rates appropriate for immediate-release tablets.
  • Antimicrobial potential of Eupatorium adenophorum Spreng
    Arvind Negi, Amit Semwal
    Pharmacognosy Journal, 2011
Abstract The antimicrobial activity of Petroleum-ether, Benzene, Chloroform, methanol and aqueous extracts of crude leaves of Eupatorium adenophorum Spreng were tested against the growth of Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus , Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , Klebsiella aerogenes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by Paper disk diffusion technique. Nearly all the extracts were found to exhibit moderate to good antibacterial activity against the bacterial pathogens tested and the petroleum ether extract recorded largest zone of inhibition against B. subtilis . The positive results so obtained were compared with that of the reference standard antibiotic ciprofloxacin. Antifungal activity of the above extracts were tested on fungal strains Aspergilus niger , Aspergilus candidus and Candida albicans using Fluconazole as the standard drug. The result shows significant antimicrobial activity of extracts against tested fungi and bacteria.
  • Antibacterial activity of Diplazium esculentum (Retz.) Sw
Semwal Amit, Kaushik Sunil, Bhatt SP, Negi Arvind
    Pharmacognosy Journal, 2011
The main objective of this research work is to screen various unexploited plants for their antimicrobial activity as these unexploited or pteridophytic plants are being used ethanomedicinally but, very little work has been done on antimicrobial aspects. So, to explore the efficacy of these plants, the following research has been carried out. Aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the plant parts of Diplazium esculentum (Retz.) Sw were tested against the growth of some human and plant pathogenic bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella arizonae, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus. Near all the extracts were found effective against these bacteria. The positive results so obtained were compared with that of the Tetracycline reference standard antibiotic. It was found that extracts when mixed in equal proportion with the antibiotic were more effective against bacteria than the antibiotic alone.
