Biomining a sustainable approach for managing dumpsite waste: An in-depth review Lokeshkumar P. Ramteke, Akshay Botle, Sayli Salgaonkar, Kaushal Gavankar Green Technology and Industry 4 0 for Sustainable Future, 2026 Biomining is an innovative waste management strategy primarily based on bioremediation and involves inoculating the dumpsite with microbial consortia to facilitate the microbe-mediated breakdown of degradable trash. Ex-situ and in-situ biomining are both shown in the article. Biomining is a feasible alternative to toxic gas and groundwater pollution due to leachate. Ex-situ bioreactor-based biomining would be the most promising approach to handling current or new dumpsite garbage. The process of recovering polymers, metals, glass, combustible fractions, inert fractions, different fine fractions, and soils from old-dumped materials is known as biomining where plastic, metals, non-biodegradable materials, and other materials would be recycled. The combustible proportions are used directly as rejected derived fuel (RDF) or indirectly by raising the calorific value. Degradable fractions are digested in a bioreactor, resulting in leachate that is generally treated as wastewater, can be desalinated to produce rich minerals-based compounds that is crude salts. Greenhouse gases and methane are released, which can be captured and utilized to generate energy, whilst non-biodegradable materials can be used to synthesize the reduced derived fuels (RDF). Systematic biomining facilities can transform waste management infrastructure in big cities, especially in developing countries, creating revenue and jobs in this sector. This study provides an overview of biomining, including current trends, case studies, goals, and creative biomining techniques. The study investigates various biomining techniques that may be used to manage old or new solid waste generated by day-to-day activities. This chapter discloses a future application of biomining in developing the biomining reactor where wastage manage in terms of conversion of waste into energy in the forms of gas, liquid, and solids.
Removal of Copper and Hexavalent Chromium Using Immobilized Modified Sludge Biomass Based Adsorbent Lokeshkumar P. Ramteke, Parag R. Gogate Clean Soil Air Water, 2016 The present work, deals with the development of an efficient modified sludge biomass (MSB) based adsorbent and subsequent application for the removal of copper and hexavalent chromium from wastewater. Different approaches of immobilization based on the use of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), calcium alginate (CA), and activated carbon (AC) have been investigated with an objective of obtaining the most efficient biosorbent. Characterization studies for the adsorbents were performed followed by batch studies to compare the efficacy of different adsorbents for metal removal. Using the most efficient biosorbent, continuous operation studies were performed for understanding the effect of operating conditions such as initial pH, flow rate, inlet concentration, and bed height. The adsorption capacity was greatly affected by initial pH, adsorbent amount, contact time, and the type of polymer matrix. The order of adsorption capacities were MSB–PVA–CMC–AC > MSB–PVA–CMC > MSB–PVA > MSB–CA with maximum values being 288.6 and 215.4 mg g−1 for Cu(II) and Cr(VI), respectively. The experimental data were successfully fitted into different isotherms and kinetic models to establish the important design parameters. Reusability studies revealed that the MSB–PVA–CMC biosorbent could be reused for five biosorption–desorption cycles without any significant loss in the adsorption capacity. Overall, the immobilized MSB on PVA–CMC has been demonstrated as an effective biosorbent for removal of copper and chromium.
