Various synthesis processes of carbon-based materials, particularly carbon dots (CDs) and nanodiamonds (NDs), as well as their luminescence centers for optical thermometry, were thoroughly reviewed. In-depth discussion of pure and doped CD-based temperature detection with several luminescence futures such as intensity, bandwidth, band shift, and decay time. The importance of nitrogen-vacancy centers in ND to temperature sensing was also explored.
Improved photocatalytic, antimicrobial and photoelectrochemical properties of nanocrystalline Cu2+-doped ZnO nanoparticles Raksha Umashankar, S. Harshitha Devi, K. Gurushantha, S.O. Manjunatha, M. Al-Dossari, G. Shobha, K.J. Rudresh Kumar, M.R. Suresh Kumar, K. Keshavamurthy, N.S. Abd EL-Gawaad, A. Madhu, S. Satyanarayana Reddy, N. Srinatha Ceramics International, 2023 Herein we present the first report on the synthesis of Cu 2+ -doped ZnO nanoparticles via the solution-combustion using a new fuel (Glutamine). Systematic studies were carried out to assess the influence of Cu 2+ -concentration on photocatalytic , antimicrobial, and photoelectrochemical characteristics through various characterizations such as XRD, SEM-EDS, FTIR, UV–Visible, photocatalytic, antimicrobial, photoelectrochemical and Photoluminescence . XRD results show the formation of single-phase nanocrystalline particles and the substitution of Cu 2+ at the Zn 2+ site without the occurrence of impurity phases. SEM & EDS analysis revealed almost spherical particles and nominal (measured and experimental) element compositions . The structural changes induced due to the substitution of Cu 2+ into the ZnO host lattice are evident in FTIR data, which show the presence of stretched ZnO bonds. The band gap narrowing effect was observed up to 5 mol% Cu 2+ and thereafter band gap widens. PL spectra exhibit multiple emission peaks related to defects present in the host ZnO induced by the Cu 2+ & PL intensity increases with the increase of doping concentration up to 3 mol % of Cu 2+ beyond that its decreases with increasing concentration. The prepared NPs demonstrate promising photocatalytic activity against MB dye in both the UV and visible ranges. The maximum 94% percentage degradation was recorded for 9 mol% CuZnO, which is the highest among CuZnO NPs reported to date. In addition, 3 mol% and 2 mol% CuZnO NPs have shown potential antimicrobial activity against Bacillus and Pseudomonas respectively. The possible mechanism for both photocatalytic activity and antimicrobial activity is demonstrated. Furthermore, 5 mol% CuZnO has shown the largest transient photocurrent of 1.147 mA/cm 2 , which is ∼12 times larger than undoped ZnO (0.096 mA/cm 2 ) due to the band-gap narrowing, suggests the possibility of photoelectrochemical sensors.
Effect of 100 MeV Ni7+ ion irradiation on photoluminescence of α-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3 phosphor K.R. Nagabhushana, H.S. Lokesha, S. Satyanarayana Reddy, N.R. Thejavathi, Fouran Singh Materials Letters X, 2023 Aluminum oxide phosphors were synthesized by solution combustion method using urea and glycine as fuel. XRD results show that the sample synthesized with urea as a fuel is α-Al2O3 and glycine as a fuel is γ-Al2O3 with rhombohedral (R-3c) and cubic (Fd-3m) structures, respectively. The PL spectra of unirradiated and Ni7+ ions irradiated α-Al2O3 show a broad peak between 1.92 and 3.2 eV with maxima at 2.25 eV. This broad emission is assigned to the combination of F2 and F22+ centers. In addition, two sharp emissions observed at 1.83 eV (678 nm) and 1.78 eV (695) are due to R-lines of Mn4+ and Cr3+ respectively. The PL intensity is enhanced after Ni7+ ion irradiation in α-Al2O3 and the highest intensity is observed for 1 × 1012 Ni7+ cm−2. PL intensity decreases beyond this fluence. Unirradiated γ-Al2O3 samples have greater PL intensity, which decreases with Ni7+ ion irradiation. PL emissions of R-lines of Mn4+ and Cr3+ are missing in γ-Al2O3 due to a lower crystal field in the gamma phase.

Madhu, Basavaraj Angadi Results in Optics, 2022 This paper describes the solution combustion (SCS) synthesis of nanocrystalline Cr3+ doped ZnAl2O4 (ZAC) particles using a new efficient fuel. A thorough investigation was conducted to comprehend the interaction of dopant (Cr3+) and ZnAl2O4 host matrix, as well as the influence of doping on their structural, optical, and luminescence characteristic properties. The powder samples were thoroughly characterized using XRD, UV–Visible Diffuse Reflectance, and Photoluminescence spectroscopic techniques. The XRD analysis demonstrates the formation of polycrystalline nanoparticles, as well as a decrease in crystallite size with increasing Cr3+ concentration. The band gap energy red-shifted as Cr3+ was incorporated into the host matrix. The diffuse reflectance spectra show two absorption peaks at 395 nm and 540 nm are assigned to the 4A2g →4T1g and 4A2g →4T2g characteristic transitions of Cr3+ ions. The PL emission spectrum, on the other hand, shows four distinct peaks, indicating the manifestation of Cr3+ ions in octahedral symmetry, that is, Cr3+ ions in a strong crystal field. Increases in Cr3+ concentration result in luminescence enhancement up to x = 0.07 and suppression of luminescence observed beyond that concentration. In addition, the dopant ion's Racah parameters, crystal field parameters, and local site symmetry are calculated.
