Chitosan and its derivatives have garnered increasing interest in oncology due to their unique properties, such as biocompatibility, bioactivity and their ability to interact with molecules. These characteristics make them promising candidates for the development of novel anticancer therapies. Chitosan can be employed as drug delivery systems, enhancing the availability and targeted release of therapeutic agents into cancer cells. Additionally, they have demonstrated the ability to inhibit cell proliferation, induce apoptosis, and modulate immune responses, positioning them as multifunctional tools in the fight against cancer. Recent research has focused on the development of chitosan-based nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery in chemotherapy, reducing side effects on healthy cells. Furthermore, Chitosan systems have been used to deliver siRNA and other therapeutic molecules, inhibiting tumor growth at the genetic level. These advancements highlight chitosan's potential in developing more effective and less toxic cancer treatments.

Biomaterials have attracted growing interest in the biomedical field thanks to their unique ability to interact with biological systems and make a significant contribution to advances in medicine, tissue engineering and sustainable technologies. Their importance lies in their dual potential: improving patients' quality of life while reducing their impact on the environment. This chapter first presents a detailed classification of biomaterials, distinguishing between natural, synthetic and hybrid categories. Next, the key properties of biomaterials are explored, showing their role in biocompatibility, durability and clinical performance. These fundamental characteristics directly influence the choice of biomaterials for a variety of applications. In addition, this chapter highlights the diversity of current biomaterial applications, while discussing the persistent challenges and limitations encountered in their design and use. Finally, future prospects are discussed, including the emergence of personalized biomaterials, which could revolutionize biomedical technologies.

Plant Stress Tolerance Molecular Mechanisms and Breeding Strategies Volume One, 2025
Heavy metals and metalloids are metallic and semi-metallic elements, respectively, that cause several toxic effects on the ecosystem. Some of them (i.e., zinc and copper) are essential and beneficial for plant development at low levels, while others, such as arsenic, germanium, and cadmium, are poisonous. In addition, the accumulation of heavy metals and metalloids in grain crops has lifted considerable concern for food safety consumption. To date, different agricultural approaches, such as water management techniques, soil amendments with organic and inorganic fertilizers (i.e., gypsum sulfur, biochar, leonardite), nanotechnology, applying living organisms (i.e., Bacillus pumilus, Aspergillus flavus), and breeding, were used to manage grain crops contamination with heavy metals and metalloids. The present chapter aims to make a brief statement about the latest reports on heavy metals, metalloids, and grain crops. Thus, this chapter will address four points: (1) the evolution of grain crop production worldwide, (2) the positive and negative effects of heavy metals and metalloids on grain crops, (3) grain crops’ mechanisms against heavy metal and metalloid stress, and (4) strategies applied to reduce the negative impact of these elements on grain crops with a focus on breeding technology.

The exponential growth of municipal solid waste (MSW) has intensified the need for sustainable waste management strategies. This review critically evaluates the environmental footprint of traditional and emerging biowaste management technologies, focusing on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, their implications for climate change, and their role in resource recovery. Conventional methods such as landfilling, composting, anaerobic digestion (AD), incineration, pyrolysis, and gasification remain dominant yet contribute significantly to environmental pollution. In contrast, emerging technologies like Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) bioconversion have shown promise in mitigating waste-related emissions while generating valuable by-products. Our systematic analysis synthesizes data from over 400 peer-reviewed studies and evaluates various management strategies based on CO 2 , CH 4 , N 2 O, and NH 3 emissions, energy efficiency, and economic feasibility. The findings highlight BSFL as an effective alternative, reducing CH 4 and N 2 O emissions while transforming organic waste into high-value products such as protein-rich biomass, biofertilizers and chitin. However, challenges remain in standardizing operational parameters and optimizing insect breeding conditions to maximize efficiency. This review goes beyond synthesis by providing a comparative environmental assessment of waste management technologies, identifying research gaps, and proposing future directions to enhance sustainable waste valorization practices. We argue that integrating advanced waste treatment technologies with circular economy principles is essential for achieving a sustainable and low-emission waste management system. • BSFL bioconversion reduces CH₄ and N₂O emissions significantly. • Landfilling emits up to 62.86 Gt CO₂-eq annually—highest among methods. • BSFL produces <1 × 10 −6 kg CH₄ and N₂O per ton of waste—lowest emissions. • BSFL offers a low-cost ($6–16/ton), circular waste valorization model.
