Advancing landslide early warning systems through saturation monitoring and prediction Prashant Sudani, Kailas Patil Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers Geotechnical Engineering, 2024 Landslides most commonly occur in the rainy season, resulting in damage to infrastructure and human lives. An early prediction framework for landslides would clearly help to mitigate damage. In this work, a prediction framework for shallow landslide initiation was developed and validated with a real case study. To assess the reliability of the prediction framework, back-analysis of a landslide that occurred in Malin village, Maharashtra, India on July 2014 was performed. Relations of landslide stability with soil saturation were established through a physically based approach using GeoStudio software. A leaky barrel algorithm was developed for the study location to monitor the effect of rainfall' on soil saturation. Simulation results of landslide stability were compared with the rainfall–soil saturation algorithm based on the leaky barrel. The presented framework was found to have good predictability of shallow landslide occurrence and is therefore recommended for real-time monitoring of landslide-prone locations.
Landslide Investigation through Emerging Technology of Electrical Resistivity Tomography Prashant Sudani, K.A. Patil Disaster Advances, 2023 A landslide is an event of a disaster and has adverse effects on every country with varying degrees of impact. The lithology's complex nature, the vast slide area and the landslide's topography make the direct investigation challenging. In depth landslide investigation demands multidisciplinary knowledge, skilled human power and costly testing equipment, making direct investigation tedious and time-consuming. However, an alternative for the direct investigation is needed to cover all the aspects of landslide mechanism. Recently advanced geophysical methods have an excellent potential for collecting landslide mechanism-related information without disturbing them. One such method is effectively used to investigate the soil's subsurface properties as one of the significant threats to stability is rainfall in a landslide-prone area and its resolve is effectively called Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT). The present study endeavors to display cutting-edge research on the applications of Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) in the field of landslide investigation. The foremost objective of the study is to present the outcomes of geophysical surveys conducted through ERT, which encompass 1D, 2D, 3D and time-lapse investigations. The study also highlights the advantages and limitations of these ERT investigations and identifies potential challenges that need to be addressed for the optimum utilization of ERT in future research.
Effect of Water Saturation on Stability of a Hill Slope: Malin Case Study , Prashant Sudani, Kailas Patil, and Advances in Civil and Architectural Engineering, 2023 The study presents a meticulous investigation into the catastrophic landslide that impacted Malin village in Pune district of Maharashtra, India. By employing a multi-faceted approach encompassing field, laboratory, and numerical analyses, in the study, stability governing parameters were thoroughly assessed with respect to varying levels of water saturation. Field investigation provided crucial insights into the geographical profile, field density, slope strata, and representative soil sample acquired from hill slopes. Furthermore, extensive laboratory investigations were conducted to gain a comprehensive understanding of the role of stability governing parameters under different water saturation levels. The limit equilibrium method was employed for numerical simulation to rigorously evaluate slope stability. The results revealed the significant influence of increased water saturation on stability governing parameters, leading to slope instability, which was confirmed by numerical simulation. The study further established that excessive rainfall triggered the landslide, saturating the soil mass and deteriorating the stability governing parameters, ultimately leading to instability. The findings of this study offer valuable insights for mitigating landslides and can be instrumental in developing effective monitoring and warning systems.
