Mamai Reports of Morphology, 2026 In contrast to the extensively studied anatomy of the arterial system of the heart, the venous system has remained in the background of researchers’ interests. However, in recent years, the range of surgical procedures and manipulations involving the cardiac venous system has significantly expanded worldwide, including invasive electrophysiological studies and implantation of leads for left heart stimulation, among others. The aim of the study was to construct and analyze regression models of coronary sinus dimensions depending on anthropometric body parameters and other coronary sinus dimensions in patients without coronary artery pathology. A total of 24 patients (15 men and 9 women) of middle age (44-60 years according to the age classification of the World Health Organization) without coronary artery pathology were examined. All patients underwent CT coronary angiography at the State Institution “Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery of National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine” The study included patients without clinical manifestations of coronary artery disease. All patients underwent contrast-enhanced multislice computed tomography of the heart (CT coronary angiography) with assessment of anatomical parameters of the coronary venous sinus during the venous phase of contrast enhancement. Demographic (age, sex), anthropometric (body weight, height) and cardiometric parameters were introduced into the model as independent variables. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed using the licensed software package “Statistica 6.0” to identify the most significant factors. In all six constructed models of coronary sinus dimensions in patients without coronary artery pathology based on anthropometric parameters, the coefficient of determination (R²) ranged from 0.122 to 0.468. Thus, the size of the coronary sinus depended on the studied body parameters by less than 50 %, and therefore these models have limited practical significance. All constructed models included the anteroposterior chest dimension, and only in one case was body length included. In six statistically significant models of coronary sinus dimensions in patients without coronary artery pathology based on other coronary sinus dimensions and anthropometric body parameters, the coefficient of determination ranged from 0.548 to 0.736. The constructed models most frequently included the transverse dimension of the coronary sinus at the ostium in the sagittal and axial planes, as well as the transverse dimension of the coronary sinus at the level of the oblique vein of the atrium in the axial plane (15.0 % each). These models may be applied in clinical practice for individualized preoperative assessment of the anatomy of the cardiac venous system. The proposed method of regression modeling of coronary sinus dimensions provides the possibility of noninvasive prediction of its parameters in patients without coronary artery pathology, thereby contributing to improved accuracy in planning invasive and interventional cardiology procedures.
Immunohistochemical characteristics of the rat ileum under impaired antioxidant defence induced by the administration of a complex of chemical food additives S. M. Bilash, Ya. O. Oliinichenko, O. M. Kopytko Reports of Morphology, 2025 The use of chemical food additives can cause morphofunctional changes in various internal organs. This is accompanied by disruption of both local immune and antioxidant defences. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate immunohistochemical changes in the ileum of rats under conditions of impaired antioxidant defence caused by the combined administration of monosodium glutamate, sodium nitrite and Ponceau 4R dye. The study was conducted on 70 sexually mature white rats, which were divided into a control group and six experimental groups of 10 animals each. The control group received saline, while the experimental groups were administered a solution of chemical food additives for 1, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks. At the end of each experimental period, ileal tissue was collected. Immunohistochemical studies were performed on paraffin-embedded sections. CD4, CD8, CD20 and CD68 markers were used to assess the cellular and humoral components of immunity. The state of the antioxidant system was evaluated by determining the levels of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity. Statistical analysis of the results was carried out using the “InStat” software package. In the early stages of the experiment, an increase in the number of CD68⁺ and CD20⁺ cells was observed, reflecting an acute tissue response to the toxic effects of the food additive complex. From weeks 4-8 onwards, a gradual decrease in the expression of CD4⁺, CD8⁺, CD20⁺ and CD68⁺ was noted, indicating the depletion of the immunoregulatory and effector components of local immunity. The lowest level of all studied cell populations was recorded at week 16. At the same time, suppression of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity was detected. Their reduction in the early stages indicates activation of lipid peroxidation processes and accumulation of reactive oxygen species, which may contribute to structural damage to the cellular components of the intestinal wall. Despite activation of the antioxidant defence system at the intermediate stages, the subsequent decline in enzyme activity after 12 weeks suggests depletion of defence mechanisms and the development of oxidative stress. Partial restoration of enzymatic activity at the end of the experiment is likely to reflect compensatory tissue responses to prolonged exposure to the damaging factor. Thus, the combined administration of monosodium glutamate, sodium nitrite and Ponceau 4R dye induces significant morphofunctional changes in the rat ileal mucosa, characterised by disruption of the cellular composition of the immune system and decreased antioxidant defence activity.
COMPARATIVE ASSESSMENT OF MORPHOMETRIC PARAMETERS OF STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF CRYPTS OF THE CECUM USING SURGICAL THREADS POLYGLACTIN-910 AND POLYCAPROLACTONE MODIFIED WITH LARGININE IN THE EXPERIMENT O.M. Mamai Azerbaijan Medical Journal, 2025 The article presents a research study conducted to comparatively examine the effects of synthetic absorbable polyglactin-910 sutures and a novel suture material, polycaprolactone modified with L-arginine (PCL-MA), on the morphometric parameters of the crypts in the mucosa of the cecum under experimental conditions. Surgical interventions were performed on 65 sexually mature outbred domestic rabbits aged 9-10 months and weighing (2.62±0.21) kg, which were divided into three groups: control and two experimental groups (the first one using PG-910 surgical thread and the second one using surgical thread PCL-MA). After the surgical intervention, the condition of the wound and the formed scar were studied on days 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, and 60. The morphometric method was used to analyze quantitative changes in the structural components of crypts in the cecum's perivulnar area in the experiment's dynamics. Statistically, the reliability of these quantitative changes was established. As a result of the study, it was found that when PCL-MA is used for suturing a wound defect, the functioning of the structural components of the crypts in the mucosa of the perivulnar area of the cecum is faster on average by 7 days than when using PG-910. Cinsi yetişkənliyə çatmış, kütləsi 2,62±0,21 kq olan 65 dovşana çərrahi müdaxilə edilmişdir. Heyvanlar kontrol və 2 eksperimental olmaqla 3 qrupa bölünmüşdür: birinci eksperimental qrupda poliqlaktin-910 cərrahi sapından, ikincidə isə polikaprolaktonun L-argininlə modifikasiya edilmiş növündən istifadə edilmişdir. Operasiyadan sonrakı 3,7,14,21,30 və 60-cı günlərdə yaranın və əmələ gələn çapığın vəziyyəti öyrənilmişdir. Ekspirementin gedişində düz bağırsağın perivulnar nahiyəsinin selikli qişasında olan büküşlərin morfometrik tədqiqi aparılmışdır. Tədqiqat nəticəsində müəyyən edilmişdir ki, sapdan kor bağırsağın perivulnar nahiyəsindəki operasiya yaralarının tikilməsi üçün L-argininlə modifikasiya edilmiş polikaprolakton cərrahi sapından istifadə edildikdə büküşlərin struktur komponentlərinin fəaliyyəti poliqlaktin-910 istifadəsindəkinə nisbətən 7 günə qədər tez bərpa olunur. В статье представлены результаты исследования, проведенного с целью проведения сравнительного анализа морфометрических параметров структурных элементов крипт слизистой оболочки слепой кишки в эксперименте с использованием синтетических рассасывающихся нитей полиглактин-910 и нового шовного материала поликапролактон, модифицированный L-аргинином (PCL MA). Хирургические вмешательства выполнены 65 половозрелым беспородным домашним кроликам в возрасте 9-10 месяцев и массой 2,62±0,21 кг, которые были разделены на три группы: контрольную и две экспериментальные (первая из них – с использованием хирургической нити полиглактин-910 и вторая – с использованием хирургической нити поликапролактон, модифицированный L-аргинином). После операции изучалось состояние раны и образовавшегося рубца на 3, 7, 14, 21, 30 и 60 сутки. Морфометрический метод был использован для анализа количественных изменений структурных компонентов крипт в перивульнарной области слепой кишки в динамике эксперимента. Достоверность этих количественных изменений была статистически подтверждена. В результате проведенных исследований установлено, что при использовании модифицированной L аргинином хирургической нити для ушивания раневого дефекта функционирование структурных компонентов крипт в слизистой оболочке перивульнарной области слепой кишки происходит раньше в среднем на 7 дней, чем при использовании хирургической нити полиглактин-910.
Morphometric features of the structural organisation of rabbit large intestine crypts after colotomy using polycaprolactone thread modified with L-arginine , O.M. Pronina, S.M. Bilash, , I.V. Mamai, and Paediatric Surgery Ukraine, 2025 The study of the morphological characteristics of large intestine tissues sutured with various surgical threads under experimental conditions is highly relevant, timely, and holds significant promise for both theoretical and practical medicine, particularly in the field of paediatric abdominal surgery. The aim is to determine the morphometric parameters of the structural organization of large intestine crypts during experimental colotomy using polycaprolactone thread modified with L-arginine (PCL-MA). Materials and methods. The study was conducted on 35 sexually mature, non-purebred domestic rabbits aged 9-10 months, in accordance with all bioethical standards. The animals were divided into a control group (5 individuals) and an experimental group (30 individuals). In the control group, all stages of surgical access and sampling of intact caecal wall tissue were carried out. The rabbits in the experimental group underwent colotomy, followed by suturing of the large intestine with PCL-MA. To achieve the aim, histological, semi-thin serial sectioning, morphometric, and statistical methods were employed. Results. The study showed that when using PCL-MA sutures, due to L-arginine on its surface, the number and functioning of absorptive enterocytes are restored from the 21st day of the experiment. The reaction of goblet cells in the crypts contributes to the formation of a protective mucosal barrier, which is manifested in an increase in their number (from day 3rd to day 14th of the experiment) and the presence of a significant number of cells in the stage of degranulation. Restoration and normalization of the functions of mucosal exocrinocytes of the perivulnar area were observed after the 21st day of the experiment. Conclusions. Poorly differentiated cells located within the crypts play a key role in the regeneration of the large intestine following surgery, as their proliferation contributes to the restoration of the cellular pool. The application of PCL-MA sutures exerts a positive influence on the processes of differentiation and the formation of undifferentiated cells within the crypts. Remodeling of the structural components of the capsule and glomerular zone of the adrenal glands cortex of white rats under the influence of a complex of food additives at the late terms of the experimental study S. However, even small amounts of these additives can lead to diseases of various organs and systems. The aim of our work is to establish metrics and morphological changes in the structure of the capsule and the glomerular zone of the cortex of the adrenal glands of rats at the later stages of the experimental study under the conditions of consumption of a complex of food additives: monosodium glutamate, sodium nitrite and Ponceau 4R. The control group of rats consumed oral drinking water and saline. The rats of the experimental groups were orally administered once a day with a 10 % solution of sodium nitrite (E250), sodium glutamate (E621) or Ponceau 4R. The dosages of food additives were two times lower than the permissible norm in food. The rats were withdrawn from the experiment after 8, 12 and 16 weeks. The adrenal glands were removed for the study. Paraffin sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and semi-thin sections with toluidine blue, and examined using a light microscope Biorex with a digital microphoto attachment DSM 900. Ultrathin sections were examined in a TEM-125 K electron microscope. For morphometric analysis, the structure of the capsule and the glomerular zone of the cortex of the adrenal glands of rats at the later stages of the experimental study was studied. The study results were analysed using the software package “InStat”. At the late stages of the experimental study, the adrenal capsule underwent irreversible changes. The average thickness of the adrenal connective tissue capsule decreased by the end of the 16th week of the experimental research. Similarly, the average thickness of the cortex decreased with each subsequent week relative to the control values, indicating significant structural and functional disorders. The average thickness of the glomerular zone of the adrenal cortex periodically changed as a compensatory reaction in response to the administration of a complex of food additives to rats. The phenomena of nucleus pyknosis and sludge syndrome were detected, which indicated compensatory and adaptive processes at the microscopic level. The analysis of electron micrographs revealed destroyed granular endoplasmic reticulum cisternae and mitochondrial remnants. Thus, it has been established that using a complex of food additives (monosodium glutamate, sodium nitrite and Ponceau 4R) directly affects the adrenal glands of rats. This effect causes structural changes in the cortex and medulla, causing alteration and hypertrophy of cells in these areas. Additionally, hyperhydration of the connective tissue stroma and compensatory-restorative reactions aimed at transcription factors and internal mechanisms of nitric oxide formation were recorded.
Effect of quercetin administration on electron microscopic changes in testicular interstitial endocrinocytes during long-term central blockade of luteinising hormone in rats Ye. V. Stetsuk, V. I. Levchenko Reports of Morphology, 2024 Quercetin is a flavonoid with potential health benefits and it may help prevent cardiovascular diseases, reduce the risk of degenerative brain processes and cancer, and has antioxidant properties that neutralise free radicals. Substances in this group also have antioxidant properties, which help the body protect itself from the harmful effects of free radicals by neutralising these unstable molecules. Research indicates that the impact of free radicals on cell structure is associated with the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular pathologies. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of quercetin administration on electron microscopic changes in the interstitial endocrinocytes of the testes under long-term central blockade of the synthesis of luteinising hormone by tryptorelin. The experiment involved 35 sexually mature male white rats. They were divided into two groups: the control group (I) received saline, while group II received subcutaneous injections of tryptorelin at a dose of 0.3 mg of active ingredient per kg of rat body weight to induce experimental central deprivation of luteinising hormone synthesis and additionally, quercetin was administered three times a day by gastric tube in terms of body weight. The study has demonstrated that the administration of tryptorelin results in structural and functional changes in the connective tissue components of rat testes. Specifically, there are quantitative and qualitative disorders in the population of interstitial endocrine cells, as well as electron microscopic changes at the subcellular level. Various pathological changes and abnormalities in the functional activity of the internal components of the cell were detected on days 270 and 365 of the experiment. The frequency, number, and size of Reinke crystals in relation to the cell volume correlated with changes in cells and increased at later stages of the study. A similar correlation with testosterone levels has not been found in the literature, which leads us to classify Reinke crystals as the result of degenerative processes in the cell. Thus, additional administration of quercetin reduces the adverse effect of tryptorelin and delays the onset of changes in the structure of interstitial endocrinocytes from day 180 to later observation periods.
Analysis of early morphological and functional perivulnar changes in the mucosa of the cecum after suturing with different surgical threads , S.M. Bilash, O.M. Pronina, , I.V. Ksyonz, , M.M. Kononov, and Paediatric Surgery Ukraine, 2024 The correct choice of suture material is the key to successful treatment in abdominal surgery, particularly pediatric surgery. Given this, experimental studies on the effect of sutures made with different surgical threads are one of the most urgent surgery needs. The aim - to conduct a comparative analysis of early morphological and functional changes in the perivulnar region of the mucosa of the rabbit cecum after suturing with polyglactin-910 and polycaprolactone modified with L-arginine. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on 25 rabbits aged 8-10 months in compliance with all bioethical standards and recommendations. The control group consisted of 5 animals; the first experimental group, in which synthetic surgical polyfilamentous absorbable suture polyglactin-910 was used to close the wound defect, and the second experimental group, in which monofilamentous absorbable suture polycaprolactone modified with L-arginine was used to close the wound defect, consisted of 10 rabbits each. All stages of surgical access and sampling of intact cecal wall tissues were performed in the control group. The rabbits of the experimental groups underwent colotomy followed by suturing of the large intestine with appropriate suture material. Each experimental group was divided into two subgroups (5 rabbits in each), in which the condition of the perivulvar region was studied on days 3 and 7, respectively. The animals were not euthanised; during the second operation, tissues of the cecum were taken from the sutured area and the formed scar at the appropriate time. Histological, semi-thin serial sections, electron microscopic, morphometric, and statistical methods were used. Discussion. The average thickness of the cecal mucosa after colotomy increased significantly on days 3-7 when using both surgical threads, but when using polycaprolactone modified with L-arginine, the above indicator was 63.06% and 22.46% lower, respectively, due to a decrease in hyperhydration of the connective tissue component of the mucosa, leukocyte infiltration in the perivulnar area and acceleration of reparative processes. Conclusions. Polycaprolactone modified with L-arginine has a positive effect on the course of morphological and functional processes in the perivulnar region of the rabbit cecum's mucosa. In terms of its characteristics, it is not worse than polyglactin-910. No conflict of interests was declared by the authors.
Morphological features of compensatory and reparative processes of the cecum in the long term of the experiment using polycaprolactone thread modified with L-arginine , O.M. Pronina, S.M. Oleksiienko, and Paediatric Surgery Ukraine, 2024 When performing surgery, the surgeon should be aware of the direct impact of the suture material on the structure of the sutured tissues and the condition of the postoperative scar, as the right surgical material is the key to rapid and successful wound healing. Therefore, searching for the safest surgical material, especially in pediatric abdominal surgery, is an urgent problem today. The aim is to determine the morphological changes in the tissues of the cecum over the long term of the experiment using polycaprolactone thread modified with L-arginine. Materials and methods. Colotomy was performed on 35 sexually mature outbred domestic rabbits (of different sexes) aged 8-10 months and weighing (2.6±0.2) kg. The experimental animals were divided into two groups: control and experimental. The first group was control (5 animals), and the second group was experimental (30 animals), where a monofilament absorbable thread with polycaprolactone modified with L-arginine was used to close the wound defect. The following research methods were used: histological, method of semi-thin serial sections, morphometric, and statistical methods. Results. Fibroblasts play the most crucial role in the process of reorganization of the postoperative scar among cellular elements. Their activation and increase occur by day 14 of the experiment. On the 30th day of the study, the structural organization and restoration of connective tissue are determined. The reorganization of the muscle component changes: a layer of young myocytes is formed in the gap between the connective tissue capsule around the surgical thread and the fibrous component of the connective tissue fibrillar framework. By the 30th day of the study, the inflammatory reaction involving plasmocytes ceases, and single plasmocytes already perform the function of local immune surveillance. Also, the role of lymphocytes that actively migrate to the focus of the inflammatory process is suppressed by day 30 of the study, and single lymphocytes perform the function of local immune surveillance. Conclusions. Thus, the dynamic changes in the cellular composition of the tissues of the perivulnar area of the cecum demonstrate the acceleration of the healing process and the formation of a loose scar when using polycaprolactone thread modified with L-arginine. Azerbaijan Medical Journal, 2024 The article provides information about a study conducted to investigate behavioral reactions and stress tolerance in rats that were administered chemical food additives (monosodium glutamate, sodium nitrite, Ponso-4R) for different durations. In the study, experimental subgroups of laboratory rats were administered complex chemical food additives daily once orally for 1, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks. Cognitive functions were assessed using the “Extrapolation Escape” test. The analysis of the obtained results showed that the estimated indicators at the initial stages of the experiment (up to 8 weeks) had positive dynamics, which was characterised by a reduction in the time of occurrence of reactions. After 12 weeks of introducing the complex of food additives, negative changes occurred, which were manifested by a gradual postponement of the studied indicators. The worst 25 indicators were recorded after week 20 (significant at p<0.05). It was found that the use of a complex of chemical food additives leads to blunted reactions under conditions of acute stress, as well as impaired ability to find a way out of the acute stress situation. В статье представлены результаты исследования, проведенного с целью установить изменения поведенческих реакций и стрессоустойчивости у крыс на разных сроках комплексного употребления химических пищевых добавок (глутамат натрия, нитрит натрия, Понсо 4R). При проведении исследования экспериментальным подгруппам лабораторных крыс в течение 1, 4, 8, 12, 16 и 20 недель вводили комплекс химических пищевых добавок ежедневно однократно перорально. Оценка когнитивных функций была проведена с использованием теста "Экстраполяционное избавление". Анализ полученных результатов показал, что оцениваемые показатели на начальных этапах эксперимента (до 8 недель) имели положительную динамику, которая характеризовалась сокращением времени возникновения реакций. После 12 недели введения комплекса пищевых добавок произошли негативные изменения, что проявлялись постепенной отсрочкой исследуемых показателей. Худшие показатели были зарегистрированы после 20 недели (достоверно при p<0,05).
