  • Assessment of Validity and Reliability of Mathematical Attitude Instruments of Elementary School Students
    N. Trisnani, H. Retnawati, W. Wuryandani
Malaysian Journal of Mathematical Sciences, 2026
Previous research has used various instruments to measure mathematical attitudes, but validated and reliable tools for Indonesian elementary students are limited. This study aims to fill this gap by developing an instrument suited to Indonesian elementary students to measure their mathematical attitudes effectively. Data were collected from 187 students using a Likert scale. Two experts assessed content validity, examining construct, content, and language aspects. To test validity and reliability, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was performed with SPSS 25.0, followed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) using LISREL 10.20. Criteria included a Standard Loading Factor (SLF) of at least 0.30, a t-value of 1.96 or higher, and construct reliability (CR) above 0.70. The analysis showed that 20 items in the instrument met the criteria for validity and reliability, confirming their suitability for measuring mathematical attitudes. The Goodness-of-Fit test indicated a strong fit between the theoretical model and the empirical data, supporting the robustness of the instrument. The developed instrument reliably measures elementary students' mathematical attitudes, meeting a key need in the field. It aligns well with Indonesian students' cultural and educational context, serving as a valuable tool for educators and researchers.
  • Diverse students in mathematics classrooms: Capturing differentiated instruction by Indonesian elementary teachers

Kasetsart Journal of Social Sciences, 2025
Differentiated mathematics learning is a complex strategy to apply, especially for elementary school teachers in Indonesia. However, information on the implementation of learning has not been studied much. The primary objective of this research is to elucidate and capture the implementation of Differentiated Instruction (DI) in the teaching of mathematics at the primary school level in Indonesia.Employing a phenomenological design, and a qualitative research approach, the study involves a collective of 22 elementary school teachers. The selection of purposive samples, chosen for their maximum variation, encompasses teachers from diverse geographical regions across Indonesia. The findings of the study in the first thematic group in this study indicate that support and resources from schools in guiding differentiated mathematics teaching may be inadequate.Concerning student grouping, learning methods, and measurement and assessment, it was found that teachers had applied distinctions. In the second thematic group on the implementation of differentiated mathematics teaching, teachers showed commitment to implementing a responsive and differentiated instruction approach, adapting the learning process according to student needs to achieve effective learning objectives.Overall, one thing that needs to be underlined is the need for more attention to providing resources and support for teachers in preparing teaching tools for differentiated mathematics teaching.
  • Prospective elementary teachers’ pedagogical understanding in science: a qualitative study from Indonesia

    Cogent Education, 2025
Pedagogical understanding is an issue that has existed for a long time and is still a focus of attention for the Indonesian government. The purpose of this study is to (1) explore and describe the extent to which prospective elementary school teacher students understand the concept of science pedagogy based on their educational background, and (2) explore ways to develop students’ pedagogical understanding. The study used a descriptive qualitative method, involving six lecturers and 130 students through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, documentation, and questionnaires as well as the use of thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke. This study shows that students’ understanding of science pedagogy is reflected in two main themes: (1) conditions of pedagogical ability (e.g. mastery of student characteristics, science learning theory, and curriculum development) and (2) opportunities for development through education and training. Thematic analysis revealed significant gaps, particularly in mastery of science learning theory (23.6%), highlighting the need for targeted training in inquiry-based and experimental approaches for Indonesian teacher education programs. These findings urge Indonesian teacher training programs to integrate more field practice and contextual pedagogical strategies.
  • Challenges of Indonesian elementary school mathematics teachers in integrating critical thinking into the classroom
Novy Trisnani, Heri Retnawati, Wuri Wuryandani
    Journal on Mathematics Education, 2024
This study addresses the pressing need to develop critical thinking skills in young learners, which is essential for 21st-century education. Focusing on Indonesian elementary school mathematics teachers, this research provides new insights into the specific challenges they encounter a context that has been underexplored in the existing literature. The primary objective of this study is to identify the barriers these teachers face when integrating critical thinking skills into their mathematics instruction. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research employs open-ended online surveys, allowing participants to respond to their own words rather than selecting from predefined options. Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants, resulting in a sample of 114 teachers from ten provinces across Indonesia. Data from the surveys were analyzed thematically and inductively using constant comparative methods. The analysis identified that the major obstacles to integrating critical thinking skills into mathematics education were limitations related to time and resources (accounting for 71.34% of identified barriers), along with deficiencies in pedagogical knowledge, confidence, and skepticism about the expected outcomes. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the considerations necessary for successfully incorporating critical thinking skills into elementary mathematics instruction and highlight the potential for enhancing teacher effectiveness in this area.
