INFLUENCE OF IMPACT ANGLE ON MASS LOSS BEHAVIOUR OF SUPER 304HCu STAINLESS STEEL UNDER AIR JET EROSION CONDITIONS M Balachandar, M Vinoth Kumar Journal of Engineering and Technology for Industrial Applications, 2025 Super 304HCu is a boiler-grade advanced austenitic stainless-steel material, used in heat exchangers for its resistance to oxidation and corrosion at high temperatures. The air jet erosion test is used to investigate the erosion behaviour of super 304HCu under various angles of impact. The samples are eroded in a test rig at different impact angles, under a constant impact velocity of 60 m/s and a particle feed rate of 3 g/min at ambient temperature, for 5 minutes. The mass loss is found to be 10 times higher at a low angle of impact (15°) than at the higher angles (>30°). The mass loss behaviour of the Super 304HCu is typical of a ductile material and the mass loss observed is compared with similar grades of stainless steel.
Optimized Biodiesel Production from Dunaliella Salina, A Unicellular Green Algae through Artificial Neural Network Hariram V, Godwin John J, Saravanan A, Sangeethkumar E, Vinoth Kumar M, Balachandar M, Ramanathan V, Baskar S Turkish Journal of Engineering, 2025 Renewable energy is a sure bet for energy needs in the future and algae biofuels for instance can go a long way to provide the energy needed. In this work, the process of obtaining the bio-oil from Dunaliella Salina, a hypersaline, unicellular microalga, having greenish-orange color, is described. The microalgae were cultured in f/2 nutrition medium supplemented with carbon dioxide and vitamins and trace metals. 650 mL of bio-oil were obtained, where ultrasonic extraction frequency of 60 Hz was carried out on the sample for a period of 90 minutes to isolate the bio-oil. The bio-oil was then processed to biodiesel through a single stage base-catalyzed transesterification using methanol and sodium hydroxide as the catalyst. This procedure produced pure Dunaliella Salina biodiesel with an extraction efficiency of 93%. The prediction tool ANN was utilized with trainlm algorithm which predicted the yield which was similar to experimental yield with error percentage of 0.09016. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectral analysis, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) are the three analysis performed on the produced biodiesel. This work paves the path for more research and development in the field of algae biofuels by demonstrating the effectiveness of Dunaliella Salina as a sustainable feedstock for biofuel production and offering a thorough explanation of the mechanisms involved in its conversion to biodiesel.
Microstructural Study of Metal Arc Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel for Automotive and Nuclear Applications K. Karthick, M. Vinoth Kumar, R. Christu Paul, K. Vinoth Kumar, E. Sangeeth Kumar, M. Balasubramanian, M. Balachandar, V. Hariram International Journal of Vehicle Structures and Systems, 2024 In the present investigation, tensile, impact, microhardness properties and metallurgical behaviour of Manual Metal Arc Welded (MMAW) 316LN Stainless Steel (SS) were analysed and discussed. From this investigation, it was observed that the optical micrograph of the weld metal region solidified in a fully austenitic mode along with small volume fractions of δ-ferrite. The existence of δ-ferrite enhances the strength but reduces ductility and toughness. The microhardness of the weld metal region is higher than others. The tensile properties are superior to 316LN SS and the failure of the transverse tensile specimens was found at the base metal region. The fracture surfaces of both impact toughness and tensile specimens have shallow dimples and flat facets.
Impact of Tool Rotational Speed and Welding Speed on Tensile Strength of Friction Stir Welded AA5083 Aluminum Alloy Joints Sreenivasulu Reddy Maram, M. Vinoth Kumar, V. Hariram SAE Technical Papers, 2024 <div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">One of the most common materials in the fabrication sectors, especially in the auto sector, is Aluminum alloy. Owing to its low strength to weight ratio, it could be a good fit for a number of applications. The cold working procedure may strengthen the 5XXX series Aluminum alloy, which is not heat treatable and it is also challenging to fuse these alloys together using fusion welding processes. In Recent days, a solid-state welding procedure, Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is used to join this alloy. The impact of FSW process parameters on tensile strength of the joint is examined in this study. Based on the outcomes of the experiment, the highest tensile strength is observed at 900 RPM tool rotation, 100 mm/min welding speed, 1.5-degree tilt angle, and 3.0 tool diameter ratio. Superior strength (246 MPa) of this parameter over its competitors can be attributed to the balanced material flow and the formation of finer grains in the weld region.</div></div>
Impact of Oxygenated Persea Americana Biodiesel at Varied Compression Ratio on the Emission and Performance Parameters of a CI Engine V. Hariram, K. L. Vasudev, A. John Presinkumar, Apolinarius Banu, Ashok Vallal Saravanan, et al. International Journal of Vehicle Structures and Systems, 2023 One of the biodiesel forms considered for research in the recent past is mixture of Avocado oil with diesel because the waste produced by avocado fruit is very huge which is not limited to the peel and stone. This paper deals with the comparison of performance and emissions of mixtures with different percentages of diesel, avocado oil and diethyl ether (DEE). The biodiesel is prepared through the process of transesterification process under acid-base catalyst. The performance characteristics considered for comparison are Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) and Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTE). The emissions considered are smoke, Carbon monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Carbon dioxide (CO2) and Unburned Hydrocarbons (UBHC). The results show that mixing avocado biodiesel in the prescience of Di-ethyl ether with diesel proved to be encouraging. Different compression ratios, namely, 17%, 17.5% and 18% were assessed and the results are reported.
Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer Studies around Impermeable and Porous Cylinders at Low Reynolds Number using Computational Fluid Dynamics K. L. Vasudev, V. Hariram, B. Gajalakshmi, R. Christu Paul, G. Sai Prajith, et al. International Journal of Vehicle Structures and Systems, 2023 Application of flow past bluff bodies like (cylinders, spheres etc) has been spread to other engineering fields (e.g., ship hydrodynamics, pipelines, heat exchangers in nuclear reactors, cooling systems, skyscrapers etc.) and no more a topic of interest only to aerodynamicists. Porous cylinders with sufficient mechanical properties and strength as of solid cylinders will be preferred due to their better fluid flow and heat transfer properties. In this work, an attempt using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach was made to compare the fluid flow and heat transfer properties of the porous square cylinder and square solid cylinder for different low Reynolds numbers. An Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) Equations were solved for the two chosen cylinders where turbulence is introduced into the equations through Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-w model. Heat transfer to the flowing fluid from the cylinders is estimated using the Nusselt number. Brinkman model in conjunction with Forchheimer term has been used to develop the flow through the porous media. The study carried out on 3-Dimensional space using commercial software Ansys. Dependence on grid and mesh has been studied by increasing the number of elements by √2 to verify and validate the methodology followed. The study has been done for different low Reynolds numbers, namely, Re = 170, 185, 200 and 250. The results are encouraging the preference of porous square cylinder than solid square cylinder for few applications.
