Autonomous Forklifts: State of the Art—Exploring Perception, Scanning Technologies and Functional Systems—A Comprehensive Review Muftah A Fraifer, Joseph Coleman, James Maguire, Petar Trslić, Gerard Dooly, Daniel Toal Electronics Switzerland, 2025 This paper presents a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge autonomous forklifts, with a strong emphasis on sensors, object detection and system functionality. It aims to explore how this technology is evolving and where it is likely headed in both the near and long-term future, while also highlighting the latest developments in both academic research and industrial applications. Given the critical importance of object detection and recognition in machine vision and autonomous vehicles, this area receives particular attention. The article provides an in-depth summary of both commercial and prototype forklifts, discussing key aspects such as design features, capabilities and benefits, and offers a detailed technical comparison. Specifically, it clarifies that all available data pertains to commercially available forklifts. To obtain a better understanding of the current state-of-the-art and its limitations, the analysis also reviews commercially available autonomous forklifts. Finally, this paper includes a comprehensive bibliography of research findings in this field.
Smart parking systems: Reviewing the literature, architecture and ways forward Can Biyik, Zaheer Allam, Gabriele Pieri, Davide Moroni, Muftah O’Fraifer, Eoin O’Connell, Stephan Olariu, Muhammad Khalid Smart Cities, 2021 The Internet of Things (IoT) has come of age, and complex solutions can now be implemented seamlessly within urban governance and management frameworks and processes. For cities, growing rates of car ownership are rendering parking availability a challenge and lowering the quality of life through increased carbon emissions. The development of smart parking solutions is thus necessary to reduce the time spent looking for parking and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The principal role of this research paper is to analyze smart parking solutions from a technical perspective, underlining the systems and sensors that are available, as documented in the literature. The review seeks to provide comprehensive insights into the building of smart parking solutions. A holistic survey of the current state of smart parking systems should incorporate the classification of such systems as big vehicular detection technologies. Finally, communication modules are presented with clarity.
Machine Learning Approach to Detection of Offensive Language in Online Communication in Arabic Azalden Alakrot, Muftah Fraifer, Nikola S. Nikolov 2021 IEEE 1st International Maghreb Meeting of the Conference on Sciences and Techniques of Automatic Control and Computer Engineering Mi Sta 2021 Proceedings, 2021 This paper presents the results of several machine learning experiments, conducted with a dataset of YouTube comments in Arabic. The experiments aim at studying the impact of various text preprocessing, feature-extraction and feature-selection techniques on the accuracy of a document classifier for detection of offensive language in online communication in Arabic. Regarding data pre-processing, our experiments focus on filtering out noisy characters and normalising inconsistencies present in casual online writing in Arabic. The combined effect of these data preprocessing techniques and a few feature-extraction and feature-selection methods is then evaluated by training document classifiers. Our results give evidence that it is possible to train a classifier for the detection of offensive language on Arabic social media with reasonable overall accuracy of 0.84, and precision, recall and F1-score of 0.89, 0.76 and 0.81, respectively.
It takes two to tango: Merging science and creativity to support continued innovation in the IoT domain Muftah Fraifer, Sameer Kharel, Asma Elmangoush, Alan Ryan, Walid Elgenaidi Advances in Science Technology and Engineering Systems, 2018 Article history: Received: 28 June, 2018 Accepted: 03 September, 2018 Online: 18 September, 2018 The Internet of Things (IoT) is a new concept that has a great appeal for researchers, businesses and the ordinary tech user. It presents new possibilities of connection between devices and people and it stimulates our need and desire to interact, to exchange ideas and to communicate with the surrounding environment. This paper briefly explores aspects of the IoT that may be important for future developments and focuses on the impact of creative methodologies, such as user centered design (UCD) in a smart parking, IoT-based system prototype. It aspires to provide an alternative perspective for an improved user experience (UX) and aims to contribute to the discussion about the challenges, findings and perspectives when merging science and creativity to maintain continuous progress in the IoT domain.
Look before you leap: Exploring the challenges of technology and user experience in the Internet of Things Muftah Fraifer, Sameer Kharel, Helen Hasenfuss, Asma Elmangoush, Alan Ryan, Walid Elgenaidi, Mikael Fernstrom Rtsi 2017 IEEE 3rd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry Conference Proceedings, 2017 The Internet of Things (IoT) is a new concept that is growing in interest amongst researchers, businesses and the end users. It engages and stimulates certain fundamental traits of human behavior — our need and desire to interact, to exchange ideas and to communicate with the surrounding environment. While the IoT potentially breaks down barriers of distance and time, it is interesting to consider how open & accessible it is. This article explores aspects of the IoT that may be important for future developments and aspires to provide an alternative perspective for an improved user experience (UX).
Designing a Smart Car Parking System (PoC) prototype utilizing CCTV nodes: A vision of an IoT parking system via UCD process Muftah Fraifer, Mikael Fernström Advances in Science Technology and Engineering Systems, 2017 Using smart parking systems has become very important, and particularly so for metropolitan areas, because of the benefits for drivers in many aspects, such as time, frustration, stress, and anger, in addition to the increased consumption of fuel while searching for a vacant parking space. This paper proposes a review of recent advances in sensing and communication technology concerning smart parking systems. It includes a brief study of the selected topics and provides an implementation process of those selected systems. Moreover, this work proposes a design approach for a smart car parking system prototype based on utilizing CCTVs (nodes), it is also illustrates the algorithms used for computer vision detection through simulation and real environments, as the system has been deployed in both these environments. Furthermore, the system has been tested and evaluated by stakeholders via a user-centred design process by applying a qualitative research; the promising results demonstrate the effectiveness of our prototype. Finally, this paper discusses the benefits of engaging the stakeholders to develop the prototype.
