European Journal of Dental Education, 2026
Introduction Special care dentistry (SCD) education involves acquiring knowledge, skills, and attitudes in managing patients with special healthcare needs (SHCN). This study reports the development of a 2‐h face‐to‐face workshop, designed based on the ADDIE and Gagne's nine events of instruction (GNEI) models, which were integrated to provide undergraduate‐level SCD training. Materials and Methods The ADDIE model was applied to plan and create a learning activity fulfilling the learning objectives of this subject. This process involved analysing (A), designing (D), developing (D), and implementing (I) the instruction based on standardised guidelines and approved curriculum content. The GNEI model was incorporated at the design (D) stage to enhance students' learning experiences via various stimuli and exercises. The learning activity was evaluated (E) through students' written reflections on their learning experiences. Qualitative data on students' reflections was analysed via thematic analysis. Results A workshop comprising case‐based discussion, demonstration, simulation exercises, and practical training involving six scenarios relating to patients with SHCN was developed. Students found that the session was beneficial in improving their understanding of SCD as it supplemented what was taught in the lectures. The cases discussed were relevant to their daily practice, and the resources developed were useful and reliable. The demonstration, practical, and simulation exercises provided hands‐on learning experiences and helped instil disability awareness. Students felt prepared for examinations and clinical practice following this activity. Conclusion Applying the integrated model ensures effective and structured teaching of SCD for undergraduate students.

Background The acquisition of knowledge, skills and positive attitudes in managing people with disabilities (PWD) is essential to ensuring the provision of high‐quality professional services. Objectives This study was undertaken to determine perceptions of PWD among Malaysian students enrolled in clinical healthcare programmes and its correlation with educational experiences. Methodology A self‐administered online survey, utilising a content‐ and face‐validated questionnaire, developed from previous literature, was conducted on all final year medical, dental, pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing, medical laboratory technology, medical imaging, optometry and nutrition/dietetics students of a Malaysian institution. Quantitative data was analysed via ANOVA, Chi‐Square and Fischer's exact tests (significance value p < 0.05). Results The majority of students have previously managed patients with physical, intellectual and mental/psychological disabilities, but not those with visual and hearing impairments. There was an insignificant difference in contact with and attitude towards PWD among students representing the different programmes. Students of various programmes noted significant differences in experiences in managing patients with physical, intellectual, visual and hearing disabilities, as well as comfort level in managing patients with physical, intellectual and mental/psychological disabilities. Most dental, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and nursing students felt that they received adequate training in managing PWD. Students who perceived that they received adequate training noted positive experience and comfort in managing all of the different PWD groups ( p < 0.05). Conclusion The findings of this study provide useful information for the various programmes in developing an effective curriculum that prepares its graduates to manage PWD in a competent manner.

IntroductionDental management in patients with congenital bleeding disorder (CBD) can be complex, as even minor oral surgery may precipitate prolonged bleeding. Effective treatment requires a thorough medical and dental history evaluation, including pre‐, intra‐, and post‐operative planning. This systematic review (SR) aims to analyze data on CBD patients, including age, treatment techniques, outcomes, and recommendations for minimizing bleeding risks.Materials and MethodsA comprehensive electronic search was conducted across five databases—PubMed via MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science—using expert‐validated keywords. Manual searches complemented the selection process, covering studies from first January 2009, to December 31, 2024. The SR followed PRISMA guidelines, with PICOS parameters defining study inclusion criteria.ResultsA total of 1221 records were identified, with three additional articles from manual and grey literature searches, resulting in 12 publications for data extraction and thematic analysis. Findings showed that patients with various CBD from seven countries underwent different dental procedures with structured pre‐, intra‐, and post‐operative management, leading to positive outcomes.ConclusionsThis SR highlights the importance of standardized care protocols and multidisciplinary collaboration in ensuring safe dental treatment for CBD patients. Advanced hemostatic methods and tailored interventions significantly minimized intra‐ and post‐operative complications.

    Special Care in Dentistry, 2025
IntroductionPoor oral health (OH) can led to severe general health issues, including respiratory infections and malnutrition, impacting the quality of life. In Malaysia, high prevalence of oral diseases including dental caries among individuals with disabilities (IWDs) has been reported, indicating a possible gap in the current system. This study aimed to analyze caries experience using DMFT index of IWDs in community‐based rehabilitation (CBR) centers across Selangor, Malaysia.MethodsA CBR centers‐based cross‐sectional study was conducted on IWDs or CBR trainees in the period between August 2022 and December 2023. Recruitments of the study participants were done via census sampling method, involving all the trainees within the specific centers. Data collection was done using the World Health Organization oral health survey tool (WHO, 2013) and analyzed using SPSS 24.ResultsTwo hundred and twenty‐six students with the age range of 2–47 years old were included in the study. Clinical examination of CBR trainees revealed (1) the mean DMFT scores were low for primary dentition (2.02), moderate for both mixed (3.86), and permanent dentitions (4.17); (2) prevalence of caries among those with primary, mixed, and permanent dentitions as 44.44%, 74.4%, and 74.80%, respectively.ConclusionsTrainees with primary dentition had a low prevalence of dental caries and mean DMFT score, while those with mixed and permanent dentition exhibited moderate levels. A statistically significant association was observed between the total DMFT scores for participants with primary dentition with both gender and disability types.

    Special Care in Dentistry, 2025
BackgroundElderly individuals in nursing homes often experience oral health problems due to their impairments and medical conditions, which can affect their general health. Caregivers in nursing homes may also have inadequate training and awareness, further exacerbating the residents’ oral health conditions.MethodsThree databases (Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed) and various websites were comprehensively searched for guidelines relevant to this systematic review, which were appraised by two reviewers using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) tool. Quality scores were calculated based on six AGREE II domains and used to determine the overall assessment of each guideline.ResultsNine guidelines were reviewed, seven out of nine guidelines were categorized as high quality, and two guidelines scored above 70% across all six AGREE II domains, demonstrating consistently high‐quality guidelines. The unique characteristics of each guideline were also identified.ConclusionThe seven high‐quality guidelines each offer unique strengths. Therefore, it is recommended to explore consolidating key elements from these guidelines to create a more comprehensive protocol for the caregivers of elderly individuals in nursing homes.

Introduction: This study was undertaken to investigate students’ perceptions of innovation-integrated learning, adopted as an alternative approach for special care dentistry (SCD) training. Methods: Ninety final-year dental students from the 2021 cohort were divided into eight groups to complete an innovation project dedicated to eight categories of patients with special health care needs. Discussion and final presentations, involving related experts were conducted remotely via an online platform. Then, students were invited to answer a validated online feedback survey on their perceptions of the learning approach. Results: The response rate for the feedback survey was 91.1% (n=82). Most students agreed that the activity was interesting, improved their knowledge and understanding of SCD, allowed engagement between peers, supported sharing of ideas and experiences, encouraged student–lecturer interactions, and enhanced knowledge integration and application. Students also expressed that the activity enhanced creativity and innovation, instilled an interest and positive attitude toward learning SCD, and encouraged teamwork. However, a few students noted facing some limitations in completing their projects (i.e., technological challenges and reduced physical access to purchase materials). Around half felt neutral about having an increased workload from this activity. Moreover, perceptions differed regarding time and financial commitments, as well as supervisors’ and patients’ involvement during the project development process. Conclusion: Students perceived that the innovation-oriented learning activity, was beneficial in multiple aspects of SCD training. Keywords: Innovation, Learning, Dental Students, Perception

OBJECTIVES This study aims to analyze the impact and students' perceptions of online peer-assisted learning (OPL), developed as an alternative and innovative approach to Special Care Dentistry (SCD) training during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online peer-assisted learning (OPL) is an alternative pedagogical approach that combines online education and peer-assisted teaching. METHODS The OPL session was conducted by two postgraduate students in SCD (as teachers), to final year undergraduate dental students (as learners) (n = 90), supervised by two specialists in SCD-related areas (as supervisors). Vetted online pre- and post-intervention quizzes were conducted before and after the session, respectively, followed by an online validated feedback survey of the students' learning experiences. Meanwhile, a reflective session was conducted between the postgraduate students and supervisors to explore their perceptions of OPL. Quantitative data was analyzed via paired t-test (significance level, P < .05). Qualitative data was analyzed via thematic analysis. RESULTS Overall, 68 (response rate = 75.6%) and 81 (response rate = 90.0%) undergraduate students completed the quiz and feedback survey, respectively. There was a significant difference in total mean scores, and mean scores of 7 (out of 10) individual items on the quizzes. Most students offered positive reviews of multiple aspects of OPL. They acknowledged the benefit of OPL for its content and preparation process, technology utilized, and experts' roles. Postgraduate students perceived that OPL encourages knowledge-recall and utilization of technology-based educational tools, while improving their teaching skills. CONCLUSION Students provided positive responses toward the implementation of OPL as an innovative approach to the teaching and learning of SCD during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Challenges in healthcare management of individuals with special needs in Malaysia: Perceptions of caregivers
    A. Omar, I. Mokhtar, M. Ahmad
Journal of International Society of Preventive and Community Dentistry, 2023
Aims and Objectives: A “caregiver” is responsible for managing the basic needs of others, including individuals with special needs (IWSNs). Caregivers play an important role in the well-being of IWSNs, though caring can lead to a decline in health and quality of life. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the perceived healthcare challenges faced by caregivers of IWSNs in Malaysia. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two primary caregivers were interviewed via audio-recorded semistructured focus group discussions to investigate their perceived barriers and challenges in caring for IWSNs. The qualitative data were then analyzed via thematic analysis. Results: Thirty-two participants took part in a total of nine discussion sessions, where the majority were females (n = 29; 90.63%) and from the Malay race (n = 30; 93.75%). Most of the IWSNs under their care had autism (n = 11; 34.38%) and were between 6 and 10 years of age (n = 13; 40.63%). The main themes identified were related to healthcare services, support systems, caregivers’ personal factors, and IWSN issues. Within the healthcare services domain, themes regarding the accessibility and appropriateness of healthcare facilities and the attitudes of staff were uncovered, whereas in the support system domain, themes pertaining to community and peer, family, and governmental support were discussed. In the domain of caregivers’ personal factors, themes regarding stress with the burden of care and feelings of guilt were noted, and in the area of IWSN factors, the theme of behavioral difficulties exhibited by IWSNs was discussed. Conclusion: Primary caregivers in Malaysia face challenges with healthcare facilities and staff, gaining support from the community, family, and government, burning out, and feeling guilty as well as behavior issues of their IWSN. Thus, understanding these challenges is vital in providing healthcare services that cater to not only IWSNs but also their caregivers to ensure the success and well-being of all involved.
  • Speech and mastication difficulties following treatment by a “street dentist”: A case of oral lipoma

    Special Care in Dentistry, 2021
In this report, we present the case of a 68-year-old male patient with a complaint of mastication and speech limitations one year after the prescription of a fixed bridge and the construction of "connected" crowns by a "street dentist." A thorough oral examination revealed a multilobulated swelling in the right buccal mucosa that extended to the buccal sulcus. The lesion, which was first noticed as a small, asymptomatic swelling by the patient one year prior, seemed to have undergone enlargement since the prostheses were prescribed. The lesion was completely removed via surgical excision under general anesthesia. Histopathological examination of the excisional mass revealed mature adipocytes and features consistent with conventional or classic lipoma. This case highlights the importance of receiving dental treatment from a qualified professional, whose responsibilities include performing a thorough examination of the oral cavity during treatment planning and delivery, review appointments, and regular dental visits. Such investigation is important to allow for early disease detection and control, especially for patients with complex treatment needs as well as those who may present with asymptomatic and slow-growing lesions such as lipomas.
