    Sensors, 2026
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms has enhanced WiFi fingerprinting-based indoor localization. However, most existing approaches are limited to 2D coordinate estimation, which leads to significant performance declines in multi-floor environments due to vertical ambiguity and inadequate spatial modeling. This limitation reduces reliability in real-world applications where accurate indoor localization is essential. This study proposes RELoc, a new 3D indoor localization framework that integrates Recursive Feature Elimination with Cross-Validation (RFECV) for optimal Access Point (AP) selection and Extremely Randomized Trees (ERT) for precise 2D and 3D coordinate regression. The ERT hyperparameters are optimized using Bayesian optimization with Optuna’s Tree-structured Parzen Estimator (TPE) to ensure robust, stable, and accurate localization. Extensive evaluation on the SODIndoorLoc and UTSIndoorLoc datasets demonstrates that RELoc delivers superior performance in both 2D and 3D indoor localization. Specifically, RELoc achieves Mean Absolute Errors (MAEs) of 1.84 m and 4.39 m for 2D coordinate prediction on SODIndoorLoc and UTSIndoorLoc, respectively. When floor information is incorporated, RELoc improves by 33.15% and 26.88% over the 2D version on these datasets. Furthermore, RELoc outperforms state-of-the-art methods by 7.52% over Graph Neural Network (GNN) and 12.77% over Deep Neural Network (DNN) on SODIndoorLoc and 40.22% over Extra Tree (ET) on UTSIndoorLoc, showing consistent improvements across various indoor environments. This enhancement emphasizes the critical role of 3D modeling in achieving robust and spatially discriminative indoor localization.
  • Interference management based on clustering in RIS-aided ultra dense network under multicell scenario
Misfa Susanto, Alisha Gita Gumilang, Helmy Fitriawan, Azrina Abd Aziz
Bulletin of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, 2025
Ultra dense network (UDN) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) are two latest technologies in encountering the increasing demands for network capacity and quality of service in wireless cellular networks. UDN is created by densely deploying femtocells in macrocells area. It causes complex interferences because distances among femtocells are likely very close. RIS provides solution in regulating the reflection of the signal emitted from the transmitter to the receiver to resolve the obstacles. However, RIS reflects the interference signals as well causing more complex interference problems. This paper proposes a solution using clustering method as interference management in RIS-aided UDN network. By clustering method, nearby femtocells are grouped and allocated different frequency channels among femtocells in a cluster. The performance of two systems–the baseline system and the one employing a clustering method–is evaluated based on signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR), throughput, and bit error rate (BER). Simulation results indicate that SINR and throughput improved by 1.57% and 1.73%, respectively. Meanwhile, the BER for the baseline system is 5.78×10-8 and decreased when applying the proposed method system with a value of 2.26×10-8. The proposed clustering method is promising to confront the interference problems.

Healthcare facilities face significant operational challenges with medical equipment management, as staff wastes approximately 6-9% of their time locating assets. This paper presents the design and implementation of a prototype web dashboard developed using Laravel 12 for an indoor asset tracking system utilizing Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology. The system enables administrators to manage assets, configure BLE readers, and monitor tracking logs. Key features include dual discovery modes (explicit/pattern), dynamic reader configuration, and threshold-based data filtering achieving 83.8% reduction in database load. Testing with 5 BLE tags and 2 ESP32 readers demonstrated 13-second end-to-end latency and zero data loss over continuous operation. The prototype dashboard integrates Kalman filter algorithm, validating the system's potential to reduce equipment search time from an average of 22.5 minutes to under 13 seconds. This prototype solution demonstrates how affordable, customizable asset tracking technology can feasibly improve hospital operational efficiency.
  • Prototyping Network-connected Multi-sensor Node of Wearable Device for Inpatient Monitoring System: Sensor Calibration Aspect
Misfa Susanto, Michelin Radina Putri, Sri Purwiyanti, Fadil Hamdani, Azrina Abd Aziz
Icocseti 2025 International Conference on Computer Sciences Engineering and Technology Innovation Proceeding, 2025
Inpatient room monitoring system has its prominence in fulfilling a smart hospital system in healthcare industry. Monitoring patient itself has its importance such as monitoring the patient who is in intensive care unit or in isolated inpatient room. It requires a real-time monitoring system that can observe patient conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to realize a real-time patient monitoring system through a wearable device. It is as our long-term goal to realize network-based wearable device for such inpatient monitoring system. Motivated by such long-term goal, this paper presents calibration aspects for prototyping a network-connected wearable device in which the device is based on muti-sensor node. Each sensor certainly requires a good accuracy value or level before being used commercially or applied to the patients. Therefore, calibration is needed. The calibrated sensors are the MAX30100 sensor as the patient's pulse and oxygen respiration sensor and the DS18B20 sensor as the patient's body temperature sensor. The method used in this calibration uses the linear regression since the two sensors have a simple and consistent relationship between the sensor output and the measured value from a standard measurement tool. The calibrated sensors are then validated using Bland Altman plot. The results have good accuracies with all parameters have more than 99% of accuracy. Multi-sensor device can be implemented as a prototype of wearable device for real-time inpatient room monitoring system.

Icocseti 2025 International Conference on Computer Sciences Engineering and Technology Innovation Proceeding, 2025
Ultra Dense Network (UDN) and Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) are technologies useable as responses in dealing with interference problems in urban areas that have high users’ demands of coverage and capacity. This paper discusses the implementation of clustering method in addressing co-tier interference problem that occur in UDNs. The clustering method applied is an algorithm or method that groups the closest HeNBs and assigns different channels among HeNBs in the same cluster. While RIS technology helps in reducing the effects of obstructed signals between the transmitter and the receiver. Simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the UDN according to four performance parameters that are evaluated i.e., signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR), average network energy, spectral efficiency, and bit error rate (BER). The results show that the SINR is increased applying the clustering method by 0.232dB, the result of spectral efficiency is increased by 0.08 bit/s/Hz, BER value is decreased by 0.5x10-3 when number of HeNBs reaches 210. Average network energy is decreased by 4.2 J/bit. The experiment evaluates comparisons to a baseline system. It can be concluded that the use of clustering method in UDNs provides a better network and system performance compared to the baseline system.
  • An Enhanced Deep Neural Network Approach for WiFi Fingerprinting-Based Multi-Floor Indoor Localization
Shehu Lukman Ayinla, Azrina Abd Aziz, Micheal Drieberg, Misfa Susanto, Afidalinatumian, Mazlaini Yahya
IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society, 2025
WiFi fingerprinting based on the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) is a widely used technique for indoor localization. However, achieving the necessary precision for most smart applications has proven difficult due to various challenges, including the time-varying characteristics of indoor RSSI, device heterogeneity, and ambiguity in the positional fingerprints. To address these concerns, Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques such as Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) have been used to classify and predict indoor locations. While these techniques have shown promising results, they face two significant challenges. First, their complex multilayer architecture requires extensive training iterations. Second, the distribution of the input layer fluctuates as the network’s parameters are updated. In this study, we propose a WiFi indoor localization framework based on Recursive Feature Elimination with Cross-Validation (RFECV) and Deep Neural Network with Batch Normalization (DNNBN). The CV process is repeated multiple times to assess the RFE’s generalization ability for optimal feature selection, and the BN algorithm is integrated into each layer of the DNN to ensure consistent activation value distribution and stabilization of the training process. Two datasets were used to assess the performance of the proposed RFECV-DNNBN method. The results show that the method addresses the challenges faced by existing AI techniques and outperforms current methods in classification and regression tasks. Our proposed framework achieved 100% accuracy in building classification and 94.69% and 96.39% in floor classification on the UJIIndoorLoc and UTSIndoorLoc datasets, respectively, demonstrating its effectiveness. Additionally, it achieved a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 5.08 m and 4.29 m for the respective datasets, highlighting its potential in multi-floored environments.

  • Reducing interference effects in distributed D2D communication underlaying multicell cellular communication network using Soft Fractional Frequency Reuse
Misfa Susanto, Soraida Sabella, FX Arinto Setyawan
International Journal of Electronics and Telecommunications, 2024
The interests of researchers in expanding network capacity and enhancing network quality have risen as a result of the growing demands for mobile multimedia traffics in cellular communication networks. Device-to-Device (D2D) communication has become a promising technology to enhance spectral efficiency and network capacity. However, since D2D devices share the frequency bandwidth with the traditional cellular networks, it causes interference problems. This paper proposes a soft Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR) scheme to resolve the interference problems in such D2D communications. Extensive simulation experiment has been carried out. The performance of the system with proposed scheme is compared to a baseline system. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is able to increase the value of SINR and throughput, achieving the values from 19.8 dB to 20.7 dB and from 66.1 to 68.8 Mbp, respectively. For CUE the scheme is able to provide an increase of 15.5% for SINR and 15% increase for throughput on downlink transmission.

Ultra Dense Network (UDN) and Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) are known as latest technologies that can enhance system capacity and performance. Deployment of RIS in UDN can overcome the signal blockages that is common in urban areas where UDN applied. However, due to dense deployed small cells, i.e. femtocell in macrocellular network, co-channel interference in UDN faces challenging problem. Applying RIS in UDN can encounter the interference problems more challenging. This paper applies soft FFR scheme in RIS-aided UDN cellular network to investigate its effects in mitigating interference problems in RIS-aided UDN cellular network. Simulation experiment has been carried to evaluate the performance of such RIS-aided UDN network. Three parameters are used to evaluate the performance of network under study, namely Signal-to- Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR), throughput and Bit Error Rate (BER). The outcomes of the simulation for the network with soft FFR are compared to the network without FFR scheme, referred to as baseline system. The simulation results show that the SINR of femtocell for the network with soft FFR scheme increases 3.07 dB, throughput increases 9.99 Mbps and BER decreases from 2.96 x 10–3 to 5.73 X 10-5• The system with soft FFR scheme outperforms the baseline system and soft FFR is promising to reduce the interference effects in RIS-aided UDN network.
