  • Natural Earth Pigments: A Guide to Eco-friendly Textile Dyeing and Printing
    Thanashree B., Mariyam Adnan
Journal of the Textile Association, 2025
This research delves into the utilization of natural earth pigments as sustainable dyes for clothing, exploring their historical significance and unique properties. These pigments, derived from minerals and clays, are biodegradable, non-toxic, and possess cultural significance, unlike synthetic dyes. The chosen material for experimentation is 100% cotton, dyed with natural earth pigments through a garment dyeing process and has also been printed with natural earth pigments through screen printing. Environmental impact assessment test results, confirm the sustainability of natural earth pigments. FTIR tests confirms the involvement of functional groups in the interaction between natural earth pigment dye and the fabric. The visual appearance test indicates satisfactory results in print durability, accessories, and overall appearance after multiple wash cycles. The garment also undergoes various other lab tests, like staining on multi fibre, dimensional stability, spirality, drapability and stiffness test to prove the durability and fabric handle properties of the garment. In conclusion, the research highlights natural earth pigments as a viable and eco-friendly alternative in the textile industry, contributing to a greener future.
  • Optimization of an ultraviolet protection finishing on silk/lyocell blended fabric
Mariyam Adnan, J. Jeyakodi Moses, Ammayappan Lakshmanan
Journal of the Textile Institute, 2021
Generally blended fabrics can satisfy the specific needs of a clothing material in terms of comfort and aesthetic value; however some blends lack uniform functional properties due to differences in their chemical properties. A study was carried to apply an ultraviolet protection finish by titanium oxide nanoparticles based emulsion on 50/50 silk/lyocell intimate blended fabric. The functional finishing process has been optimised by a design of experiment using Box and Behnken model with three variables such as concentration of TiO2 nanoparticles, padding time and curing temperature at three levels. The ultraviolet protection factor, tensile strength, air permeability, bending length, water absorbency and surface morphology of finished fabrics were evaluated; followed by regression analysis for optimisation in statistical software Design Expert 8.1. The optimum condition for UV protection finishing on silk/lyocell blended fabric was 5.85% TiO2, 35 min padding time and 98 °C curing temperature and the respective finished fabric sustained its desirable functionality up to 15 washing cycles.
  • Performance and Characterization of Aloe Vera Microcapsules on Silk/Lyocell Blended Fabric
    Mariyam Adnan, Jeyakodi Moses
    Tekstil Ve Konfeksiyon, 2020
In this study, silk and lyocell fibers are blended in the ratio of 50:50 and used in warp and weft directions for the construction of a plain weave fabric. Aloe vera based microcapsules have been used to impart antibacterial finish and its performance on silk/lyocell blended fabrics have been assessed by scanning electron microscope, electron dispersive x-ray, fourier transform infrared spectrum, agar diffusion test, bacterial reduction test, and durability against washing. SEM analysis shows that the aloe vera capsules are impregnated in the fabric. EDX also proved the presence of aloe vera in the fabric by showing the presence of chemicals like Mg, Ca, K, Al and Fe which are not present in the untreated fabric. FTIR spectra of aloe vera treated samples showed an ether group, an alcohol secondary group, an aromatic group and a nitro group which shows the probable chromophoric groups likely to be present in the leaf, gel and root of aloe vera. The results of agar diffusion test clearly showed that aloe vera treated S/L 50:50 blended fabrics have very good antibacterial properties and do not allow the growth of bacteria under the treated fabric. The zone of inhibition was found to be very good and ranged from 28 mm to 30 mm. Bacterial reduction test showed the percentage reduction values of both the microorganisms S. aureus and E. coli to be more than 97%. The wash durability of aloe vera treated fabrics lasted up to 25 washes.
  • A study on the thermophysiological and tactile comfort properties of silk/lyocell blended fabrics
    Mariyam Adnan, Jeyakodi Moses
    Revista Materia, 2020
Certain investigations on the thermophysiological and tactile comfort properties of silk/lyocell blended fabrics have been carried out. A series of yarns were produced as 100% silk (S 100), 75% silk and 25% lyocell (S/L 75:25), 50% silk and 50% lyocell (S/L 50:50), 25% silk and 75% lyocell (S/L 25:75) and 100% lyocell (L 100) and converted to woven fabrics keeping the same fabric set. FTIR study on silk, lyocell and silk/lyocell blended fabrics show the characteristic functional groups for the respective fabrics. The effects of blend compositions on thermophysiological and tactile comfort properties were examined and the results show that thermal resistance of the fabrics containing silk has a higher value in comparison with lyocell-rich blends. Water vapour permeability, absorbency and wickability for lyocell and lyocell-rich blends are found to be superior as compared to 100% silk fabrics. With respect to drape, bending length and crease recovery the lyocell rich fabrics are good in comparison with 100% silk fabrics. The results are discussed using one way ANOVA with 5% significant level. Keywords: silk, lyocell, blending, comfort, eco-friendly.
