Abstract In this study, MnxNi1–xFe2O4 (x = 0 to 1) nanoparticles (MNPs) were prepared by a sol–gel auto-combustion route. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurements are used to investigate the effect of Mn substitution on the structure and magnetic properties of the samples. The XRD patterns confirmed that all the samples show a cubic spinel structure; further, the spinel structure of ferrite is validated by FTIR. As Mn2+ ion concentration increases, the peak of the Fe–O bond moves to a lower frequency at tetrahedral sites. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis depicted particle sizes ranging from 47.70 ± 2.6 to 56.74 ± 3.1 nm with increasing Mn2+ substitution. The saturation magnetization (Ms) increased from 26.21 to 34.95 emu/g, while the coercivity (Hc) remained negligible with increasing Mn2+ content. The self-heating characteristics of MnxNi1–xFe2O4 (x = 0 to 1) MNPs in an AC magnetic field were evaluated by specific absorption rate (SAR) and intrinsic loss power, both of which were presented with varying MNPs composition and field amplitudes. The optimized Mn0.2Ni0.8Fe2O4 MNPs can be used as a promising candidate for hyperthermia applications.

Thin films of Zn1–xMnxO (x = 1–4 at %) were applied onto a glass substrate by low-cost chemical bath deposition (CBD). The films were characterized by XRD, UV–VIS absorption spectra, SEM, and vibrating sample magnetometry—with special emphasis on the influence of dopant concentration x. Structural and optical properties of deposited films imply that the Mn2+ ions substituted Zn2+ ions without changing the wurtzite structure of ZnO. No impurity phases were detected in XRD patterns. The band gap in ZnO was found to increase with increasing x. Magnetic measurements showed that Mn-doped ZnO samples exhibited ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature, which tentatively was associated with the replacement of Zn2+ ions by Mn2+ ions in the ZnO lattice.
  • Combustion-Synthesized Ni–Cd Ferrites and their Structural, Magnetic, and Microwave Absorbing Properties
    M. B. Shelar, S. N. Yadav
International Journal of Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis, 2019
Ni1 – xCdxFe2O4 ferrites (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) were prepared by solution-combustion synthesis and characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR spectra, hysteresis measurements, and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR). The ferrite particles had a size of 20–30 nm. The saturation magnetization observed for x = 0.6 composition was about 56 emu/g. The real and complex permittivity in the frequency range 8–12 GHz was found to vary between 10 and 30. The Cd content of ferrites was found to increase the MW absorption. At x = 0.6, the MW absorbance attained a value of 0.958 at f = 9.5 GHz.
  • Magnetoelectric Composites yNi1−xCdxFe2O4 + (1 − y)Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6; y = 0.15, 0.30, 0.45): Solution-Combustion Synthesis and Microwave Properties

International Journal of Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis, 2018
Magnetoelectric composites yNi1−xCdxFe2O4 + (1 − y)Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6; y = 0.15, 0.30, 0.45) were prepared by solution-combustion synthesis and characterized by XRD, SEM, and MW measurements. Low MW transmittance (about 0.15) was obtained at f = 8.5 GHz for composites with x = 0.6, y = 0.45. The MW reflectance did not show any dependence on Cd content x. The MW absorptivity levels-off at higher f. A maximum value of dielectric constant (about 42.6) is observed at f = 8.5 GHz for composites with x = 0.6, y = 0.45. Our composites seem promising for use in tunable microwave devices.
  • Combustion-synthesized ferrites and ferroelectrics for microwave applications
    M. B. Shelar, V. Puri
International Journal of Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis, 2013
The individual phases of Ni1 − x Cd x Fe2O4 (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) ferrite and Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 ferroelectric (BST phase) were successfully prepared by autocombustion route. The oscillatory behavior of transmittance for the Ni-Cd ferrite was observed at about 0.44 at 8.2 GHz. The absorption study depicts the hopping phenomena of microwaves through the Ni-Cd phase. The dependence of microwave conductivity on ferrite content was discussed. The dielectric permittivity of Ni-Cd ferrites varied between 10 and 30. Compared to the Ni-Cd phase, the transmittance of the Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 phase was found to be low. The dip in reflection loss for Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 is equivalent to the minimum reflection or the maximum absorption of the microwave power for BST phase. The maximum microwave conductivity for Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 was found to be about 0.459 S/cm. The high microwave permittivity for Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 had a value of about 120.21.
  • Ni0.4Co x Cd0.6 - X Fe2O 4 ferrites as prepared by autocombustion synthesis

International Journal of Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis, 2012
Ni0.4Co x Cd0.6−x Fe2O4 ferrites (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6) were prepared by autocombustion synthesis and characterized by XRD, SEM, and other physical methods. XRD reveals the formation of spinel structure without any impurity phase. With increasing x, the lattice parameter was found to decrease from 8.60 to 8.37 Å. The FTIR spectra show the presence of tetrahedral site (at 571.12 cm−1) and octahedral site (at 407.07 cm−1). SEM images indicated the formation of agglomerated grains with a size of about 4.3 μm. The resistivity of the ferrites was found to decrease from 24.53 to 10.02 × 108 Ω cm while the drift mobility to increase from 2.30 to 4.41 × 108 cm2 V−1 s−1 with increasing x.

ZnO is one of the multifunctional metal oxide semiconductors suitable for use in optoelectronic devices, as an alternative to tin oxide and indium oxide. Undoped ZnO films have been prepared using simple and cost-effective spray pyrolysis technique. In this work, we present detailed analysis of the structural, morphological and optical properties of ZnO films. X-ray diffraction spectra of the films have shown that the films are polycrystalline and hexagonal wurtzite in structure. The average grain size, estimated from the (002) peak using the Scherrer formula is around 40 ± 5 nm. The average optical transmittance of undoped ZnO thin films was about 80% in the visible. The AFM analysis reveals the surface topology having highly rough nature. The enhanced extinction coefficient varies with the flow rate. The EDX spectrum registers non-stoichiometric ZnO growth with O and Zn in 28.46 and 71.56 at. %. The features of the ZnO lead to the visible light transmission and efficient charge transport.
  • Dielectric loss and magnetic behavior of combustion synthesized ferrite-ferroelectric composites1
    M. B. Shelar, V. Puri
International Journal of Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis, 2011
Spinel-type nickel cadmium ferrite and perovskite-type barium strontium titanate ferroelectric and their composites have been grown by combustion route. The variation of loss tangent with frequency in the range 100 Hz to 1 MHz was studied. The ac conductivity was derived from dielectric constant (ε′) and loss tangent (tanδ) measurements. The nature of conduction is discussed on the basis of small polaron hopping model. The dependence of saturation magnetization (M s ) and remanent magnetization (M r ) of the composites is also reported.
