  • Labour conflict situations in the tourism and hospitality industry

    In the scope of work in the tourism and hospitality industry, personal and professional performance, enhanced productivity, technologies, and social networks are strongly interconnected processes. They form a complex chain that spans from individual requirements, behaviour, and skills to socio-structural factors related to society’s historical context and evolving values. This chapter focuses on the conflict aspects of work relations in the tourism and hospitality sector, considering the political, market, and ideological dimensions, as well as the contradictions of the contemporary world. The methods employed in this study encompass bibliographic research and analysis of interviews conducted with workers in this sector. The findings indicate that the demands of this labour market give rise to forms of suffering that reflect exclusion, routinization, and the erosion of meaning in the lives of these workers – the hosts – who are burdened with the responsibility of welcoming others – the guests or tourists.
  • Quality, transformations and scientific enhancement in Brazil and Latin America

    The competition faced by the metal-mechanical sector in Brazil impels companies to pursue competitiveness. This condition induces continuous improvements, among them the development of productive systems. Thus, a new operational strategic orientation is necessary to achieve the goals of maximizing profits, and to stand out from the competition, through greater productivity. The objective of this article is to report on the main steps to be taken in the pursuit of improvement of the productive process, and to measure quantitative gains by the application of kaizen in the sectors that manufacture metallic components for the large equipment and machinery industry. In this sense, this work investigates the production process of a manufacturer of industrial components operating in the region of Piracicaba / SP. The research method used was based on a literature review in the field of Production Engineering, about Lean Production and the elimination of waste by kaizen. Subsequently, a case study of an exploratory nature was carried out in the company investigated. The results show that it was possible to eliminate waste and promote improvements in the manufacturing process, reduce overproduction, waiting time, excessive movement and transportation of parts and components, and gains in factory space and labor shortages directly employed in the production process.
  • Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration – Persona grata: The human concept of hospitality for immigrants and refugees

    RESUMÉ Cet article reflète la crise de l’hospitalité qui se présente sur la scène globale à travers l’exposition Persona grata au Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration à Paris. Le défi qui se pose, dans cette recherche, est de contribuer à l’approfondissement du débat interdisciplinaire sur l’hospitalité à la lumière des penseurs français comme Derrida, Gotman, Boudou, Brugère et Le Blanc. L’élément méthodologique utilisé dans cette recherche était l’observation directe et l’enregistrement photographique. La présentation de la proposition muséographique de l’exposition Persona grata fait ressortir les critiques de l’hospitalité dans la modernité. Le lien entre l’hospitalité et l’immigration, inséré dans les expositions permanente et temporaire du Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration, a servi à la réflexion sur les pratiques des inclus et des exclus de immigrants et réfugiés du processus social.

    Skandrani and Kamoun (2014) argue that perceptions of hospitality may foster behavioural and aective loyalty and that cultural sensitivity is a critical skill that may help hospitality providers cope with guests’ cultural dierences. They argue that the hospitality conception seems to have a pentagonal structure revolving around personalisation, comfort, relationship of guest/ host, hospitableness and warm welcoming dimensions. Lashley (2015) makes reference to the contemporary use of the word hospitality to describe a variety of sectors initially motivated by a public relations need to cloud over the commercial nature of enterprises (i.e. hotels). Even so, he argues that the nature of ‘genuine hospitality’ and the array of motives for oering hospitality should be at the heart of an understanding of the hospitality experiences and human resource aspects (i.e. recruitment and rewarding) which are the foundation of any competitive advantage. The sector needs also to consider some of the small rm providers (i.e. B&Bs) where the domestic and commercial aspects of hospitality and hospitableness overlap.
