The accumulation of waste produced by stone-cutting industries poses a significant environmental challenge, while the construction sector negatively impacts the environment due to the intensive extraction of natural resources. In this context, integrating these two demands represents a sustainable solution, promoting a responsible approach to civil construction and energy efficiency. In addition, nanotechnology offers pathways for developing multifunctional materials combining mechanical, photocatalytic, and antimicrobial properties. This study investigates sustainable mortars incorporating granite powder as a partial replacement for natural sand, reducing natural aggregate consumption and promoting the reuse of industrial by-products. Additionally, zinc oxide microparticles (ZnO-MPs) were used as functional additives. Mortar mixtures containing 15% and 30% of granite powder and 0.33% of ZnO-MPs were prepared and evaluated. Photocatalytic capacity performance was assessed by methylene blue degradation, and antibacterial activity by the inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus . The results showed that replacing sand with 30% granite powder and incorporating 0.33% ZnO-MPs increased compressive strength by 33%, attributed to the microstructural densification and reduced pore volume provided by ZnO-MPs. These enhancements contribute to greater durability and reduced maintenance costs. The GP–ZnO-MP composite achieved 95% dye degradation under solar irradiation and exhibited antibacterial performance. Overall, the results demonstrate the synergistic potential of combining mineral waste and ZnO particles to produce eco-efficient mortars with structural, photocatalytic, and hygienic functionalities aligned with sustainable and circular construction principles. This innovative material shows potential for future applications in water and wastewater treatment. • Granite Powder replaced natural sand enhancing compressive strength by 33%. • Granite Powder–ZnO composites achieved 95% dye degradation under solar light. • ZnO microparticles densified the matrix and improved hydration kinetics. • Mortars exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus . • Recycling waste in construction boosts energy efficiency of the overall process

Concrete and mortar production consumes significant natural resources, leading to environmental concerns and sustainability challenges. Sustainable alternatives, such as industrial byproducts, have been explored to replace clinkers and aggregates. Basalt rock powder (BRP) is a promising option due to its physical and chemical properties, including its better particle size distribution and compatibility with cementitious composites, and studies have highlighted its pozzolanic activity and its potential to improve mechanical properties (compressive strength, flexural strength, and durability). Reusing rock dust as a raw material could transform it into a mineral byproduct, benefiting the new material and reducing waste volumes. This article presents a systematic literature review on the use of BRP in construction materials, conducted using the Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Web of Science databases and following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) procedures. The search resulted in 787 articles (up to December 2024) and, after the screening process, 17 met the inclusion criteria. From the selected articles, information regarding the utilization of this waste product; its influence on mechanical properties, pozzolanic activity, and durability; and the sustainability associated with its use was compiled. The risk of bias was low as the search was comprehensive, all the papers were peer-reviewed, and all authors reviewed the papers independently. In conclusion, the studies demonstrate the potential of using BRP as a component of cementitious materials, indicating it as a possible innovative solution to the current challenges in the construction industry.
  • Durability Assessment of Binary and Ternary Eco-Friendly Mortars with Low Cement Content

    Solids, 2025
Global cement manufacturing generated 1.6 billion metric tons of CO2 in 2022 and relies heavily on non-renewable raw materials. Utilizing agro-industrial waste as supplementary cementitious material (SCM) can help mitigate the demand for these resources. SCMs have been integrated into cement production to deliver both technical and environmental benefits to mortars and concrete. This study examines mortar blends containing blast furnace slag (BFS), Brazilian calcined clay (BCC), and bamboo leaf ash (BLA). While BFS and BCC are already established in the cement industry, recent research has highlighted BLA as a promising pozzolanic material. The SCMs were characterized, and mortars were produced to assess their flexural and compressive strength, as well as durability indicators such as electrical resistivity, chloride diffusion, migration coefficient, and carbonation resistance. The findings reveal significant performance enhancements. Partial cement replacement (20% and 40%) maintained the strength of both binary and ternary mortars, demonstrating statistical equivalence to the reference mortar (p > 0.05). It also contributed to an improved pore structure, reducing the migration coefficient by up to four times in the 20BLA20BCC mix (which replaces 20% of cement with BLA and 20% with BCC) compared to the reference mix. Chemically, the SCMs enhanced the chloride-binding capacity of the cementitious matrix by up to seven times in the case of the 20BCC mortar, thereby improving its durability. Therefore, all tested compositions—binary and ternary—showed mechanical and durability advantages over the reference while also contributing to the reduction in environmental impacts associated with the cement industry.
