Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are increasingly used to replace metallic materials or composites, either partially or fully, in some applications. Synthetic fiber-reinforced polymer composites generally exhibit superior mechanical properties compared to natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites. However, certain natural fiber composites possess higher specific strength than their synthetic counterparts. Therefore, it is necessary to hybridize natural–natural or natural–synthetic fiber-reinforced composites (SFRCs) to compensate for the weaknesses of individual fiber types. In this chapter, the development, characterization, and application of hybrid natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites are analyzed and discussed.

Borassus flabellifer leaflet fibres (BFLF) have indeed been found to be an excellent material for producing low-cost nanocomposites. In this study, the stalk leaflet of Borassus flabellifer was employed to derive an emerging category of fibre. To address the disadvantages of hydroxyl bonding, the extracted leaflet strips were treated with NaOH solution. For the formation of nanoparticles, treated rice husk (RH) samples were ground utilizing stainless steel balls in a mild steel ball mill pot. Rice husk nanoparticles (RHN) were integrated onto the treated bi-lateral leaflet fibre surface with 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9 wt percent, utilizing silane coupling agent (KH-171). The composite samples were developed using the hand lay-up method. The developed samples were evaluated to assess the physical, mechanical, thermal, and morphological behaviour of the nanocomposites. FT-IR, XRD, SEM, and EDX analysis were used to examine the properties of BFLF. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) of RHN with an average size of 86–95 nm were employed in this study. The density analysis revealed that the RHN integrated BFLF composites contained fewer voids (1.578 %) as compared to the untreated fibre composites (2.906 %). The findings of the investigation confirm the integration of RHN onto the fibre surface improved the mechanical properties of nanocomposites in terms of tensile strength (13.37 ± 0.66–19.90 ± 0.79 MPa), tensile modulus (1.56 ± 0.07–2.39 ± 0.11 GPa), flexural modulus (2.25 ± 0.11–3.39 ± 0.16 GPa), and Barcol hardness (30.40 ± 1.32–36.00 ± 1.68 HB). The thermogravimetric (TG) investigation verified that the modified nanocomposites had superior thermal stability (315–384 °C). The developed nanocomposites are to be employed in door panels, household appliances, building construction, and room partitions, among other applications, as low-cost, light-weight composites. • Analysis carried out on the extraction process of Borassus flabellifer leaflet fibre. • Procedure for making rice husk nanoparticles (RHN) explored. • Technique of integrating of RHN with KH-171 onto the surface of BFLF assessed. • An evaluation on the structure analysis of RHN-integrated nanocomposites performed. • Analysis and characteristics of nanoparticles integrated BFLF composites investigated.

The aim of this study is to investigate the dynamic mechanical and thermal stability behavior of rice husk nano-biofillers blend epoxy hybrid composites reinforced by Borassus flabellifer L. leaf fiber. The raw Borassus leaf fibers were treated with 5 wt.% NaOH solution to reduce the disadvantages of hydroxyl bonding. Rice husk nano-fillers (RHNFs) were blended with epoxy resin to modify them with 0.25, 0.45, and 0.65 wt.%, respectively, using sonication and mechanical stirring process. The prepared samples were assessed to evaluate the thermal stability, maximum degradation temperature, storage modulus (E′), loss modulus (E″), damping factor (tan δ) and Cole–Cole plot of the composites. EDX spectroscopy was used to confirm the elemental composition of nano-biofillers. The morphology of RHNFs was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The TG analysis confirmed that the 0.45 wt.% RHNFs blended Borassus leaf fiber (BLF) composites exhibited superior thermal stability (371–384 °C). Derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) analysis exposed that the maximum mass-loss degradation temperature of 0.45 wt.% RHNFs blend composites was 411 °C for the first stage and 678 °C for the second stage, which were more than raw and RHNFs blend (0.25 and 0.65 wt.%) composites. Accordingly, improved E′ (959.16–1637.75 MPa), glass transition temperature (Tg) from E″ (90.48–97.69 °C) and, Tg from tan δ (103.35–109.67 °C) were derived from the modified composites. Owing to the improved dispersion of the nano-filler, the 0.45 wt.% RHNFs blend composites had a homogeneous polymer system, as verified by the Cole–Cole diagram. The analyzed composites are to be used with versatile functionality for their intended purpose.
