  • A feature of everyday speech in translation. The discourse marker i wo and its correlates in four novels by Hans Fallada (1893–1947) translated into Catalan

    This paper studies the discursive functions of the marker i wo in literary dialogues and their translation into Catalan. In the framework of fictional orality, it is assumed that i wo evokes spoken language in character speech, a trait that is also prioritised in the target language. For the study, 45 occurrences from four novels by Hans Fallada were analysed. The results indicate that the discourse marker is mainly used as a modaliser to express the speaker’s attitude. Other values are related to the reformulating function, in which the sender revisits a preceding segment of the turn in order to clarify it, and the conclusive function, whereby i wo is used to raise the argumentative force of the speaker’s enunciation to close the topic. The analysis carried out shows that the different functions of the marker are not mutually exclusive and that it is a polyfunctional unit that can act on different levels of conversational construction, such as the organisation of the discourse or the regulation of conversation. The translator’s approach is clearly characterised by reproducing the sparsely described marker from its context, which also includes the corresponding functions.
  • Why is a manual of female education written? El libro de las niñas (1845) and the Manual completo de urbanidad para las niñas (1849) by Joaquim Rubió i Ors

    Este artículo investiga las razones que llevaron a Josep Rubió i Ors (1818-1899), poeta catalán y artífice de la Renaixença, a redactar dos manuales de educación femenina en castellano: El libro de las niñas (1845) y el Manual completo de urbanidad para las niñas (1849). Se llega a la conclusión de que un factor esencial fueron las necesidades de venta de la librería-imprenta Rubió (Barcelona) y del mercado de manuales escolares de la época. Para corroborar este resultado se analizan los paratextos de las dos obras, así como las cartas que Josep Rubió i Ors envió a su hermano mientras este ocupaba una cátedra en la Universidad de Valladolid. Como se desprende de la correspondencia, prevalecieron consideraciones comerciales en la concepción del segundo manual, hecho que también es posible aplicar a El libro de las niñas, éxito de ventas de la imprenta. Se documenta que el interés de Joaquim Rubió i Ors por la educación femenina se completaba con el conocimiento de las ediciones y manuales existentes en este ámbito gracias a la conexión con la librería-imprenta familiar.

    Resumen A partir del género textual de los manuales de urbanidad, este artículo pretende responder a la pregunta de qué lengua se utilizó para la enseñanza de las normas sociopragmáticas en la Cataluña decimonónica. Entre un corpus de 51 manuales publicados en Cataluña durante el siglo xix encontramos solo dos redactados en catalán. Nuestro análisis muestra que los factores decisivos para la elección de la lengua fueron las circunstancias de la publicación y los destinatarios. Los dos manuales se dirigían a un público monolingüe, a saber, a las clases campesina y obrera, respectivamente. Concluimos que la Überdachung del catalán por el castellano fue un proceso lento, que a finales del siglo XIX todavía no había alcanzado todas las partes de la sociedad.

    This article presents the development of Catalan grammar codification by highlighting its diatopic and diaphasic variation and how this is considered in the two official normative grammars (1918/1933 and 2016). The shift from a monocentric approach to a pluricentric one is also demonstrated by means of other parallel attempts at codification that have contributed to constructing Catalan’s so-called polymorphism. Two divergent or secessionist attempts at standardization are taken into account in order to demonstrate the centrifugal as well as centripetal tendencies. The Catalan article system (definite, personal and neuter articles) is a useful example for examining the approach of each of the grammar books with regard to the distribution of the diatopic and diaphasic variation. It remains to be seen whether the pluricentric standardization and a balanced polymorphism will prevail in the future.

    This chapter provides an overview of the Renaixença movement, that is, the revival of Catalan language and literature in the second half of the 19th century. For a better understanding of the linguistic, cultural and socio-political changes associated with the movement, this article also describes the conditions in the early 19th century in terms of break and continuity. This includes the “roofing” of a mainly monolingual Catalan society by Spanish, the prestigious but foreign language, more closely linked with formal and written usage. The construction of the modern Spanish state and its ongoing centralisation are documented through the series of laws restricting the use of Catalan. This chapter’s main focus is the recovery of the language for literary use through the Jocs Florals poetry competition which was reinstated in 1859. The second focus regards the use of Catalan in the press. The late 19th century also saw the emergence of political Catalanism, a key ideological component of which became the nurturing of a separate language. As references to a common writing tradition had been lost over the previous centuries, the reintroduction of Catalan for most written uses triggered a debate over which model should be adopted for standardisation: one concerned with the past or one that took as its reference point the use of spoken Catalan at the time.
