Intellectual property registration strategies in domestic and foreign contexts Jefferson Luiz Bution, Fábio Lotti Oliva, Eduardo Pinheiro Gondim de Vasconcellos Innovation and Management Review, 2026 Purpose This study examines the key drivers behind intellectual property (IP) registrations across countries, with a focus on International Intellectual Property Registration Strategies (IIPRSs). Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 98 countries to examine the net effects of IIPRS on patent, industrial design and trademark filings by both residents and non-residents. Sixteen variables sourced from international organizations were analyzed through Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings The results indicate that the causal relationships unfold in three stages: first, a country’s business-friendly environment positively affects purchasing power and the allocation of resources to research and development (R&D); second, R&D investments drive domestic IP applications but do not motivate foreign filings; and third, consumption capacity encourages IP registrations by both locals and foreigners, with a stronger effect observed among foreign applicants. Research limitations/implications One challenge involved compiling a reliable dataset due to variations across sources and methodological changes in the data series. Future research should adopt longitudinal approaches to capture changes over time. Practical implications The findings suggest that managers of innovative firms can make more informed decisions about where to file for IP protection, where to invest and how to balance legal protections with trade secrets. For policymakers, effectively attracting technologies and intellectual investments requires strategically balancing market potential and R&D efforts. Originality/value This study highlights how the sophistication of IIPRS reshapes the hierarchy of motivations driving foreign investments in international IP registration.
Appetite for risk: theoretical framework and practical application in a technology-based environment Fábio Lotti Oliva, Jefferson Luiz Bution, Flavia Gutierrez Motta, Germano Fenner, Brandon Randolph-Seng, et al. Journal of Intellectual Capital, 2025 PurposeThe research objective was twofold: first, to propose a novel framework for composing an organization’s aggregate risk appetite, and second, to demonstrate the application of this framework in a suitable organization.Design/methodology/approachA conceptual framework for defining an organization’s aggregate risk appetite was developed based on relevant organizational theory and research through the lens of knowledge management. The organizational appetite for risk framework was subsequently implemented at the São Paulo State Technological Research Institute (IPT) using the design science research approach. Finally, the implementation was carefully examined in order to encourage future applications and to further refine the appetite for risk framework.FindingsThe composition and application of the proposed appetite for risk framework optimally identified the aggregated risk appetite of the complete test organization. Moreover, organizational differences between bottom-up tolerance and top-down appetite were revealed.Practical implicationsOur main practical contribution is a comprehensive procedure to conduct a risk assessment and achieve an organization-wide aggregate risk appetite through the lens of knowledge management.Originality/valueUnlike past theory and research that take a strictly top-down approach to risk appetite, our framework integrates dispersed knowledge on risk-taking at various levels of the organization, thereby contributing to the underexplored role of bottom management in shaping aggregate risk appetite.
Crisis management: a post-pandemic framework proposition and lessons learned at Hyundai Motor Brazil Fabio Lotti Oliva, Jefferson Luiz Bution, Andrei Carlos Torresani Paza, Ricardo Augusto Martins, Marcelo Albuquerque, et al. European Journal of Innovation Management, 2024 PurposeThis study relies on the lessons learned from the recent pandemic crisis to propose a conceptual framework for organizational crisis management and illustrate its application in an organization that effectively protected its competitive position during the crisis.Design/methodology/approachBuilding upon the resource-based view and the dynamic capability theoretical framework, we first conducted a systematic literature review that involves content and bibliographic analysis. Subsequently, we developed a conceptual crisis management framework and applied it to the case of Hyundai Motor Brazil.FindingsThe systematic literature review found innovation and knowledge management as prominent response mechanisms to the pandemic crisis whereas the case provided a better understanding on how these mechanisms contributed to crisis navigation.Practical implicationsManagers will find valuable insights into the importance of linking risk management and crisis management, and leveraging innovation and knowledge to enhance resilience, with straightforward operationalization for benchmark.Originality/valueThis paper is original for relating enterprise risk management, innovation and knowledge management to each phase of existing crisis management processes. It enriches the theoretical and practical debate on the dynamic capabilities’ perspective of risk and crisis management.
Examining the generalizability of research findings from archival data Andrew Delios, Elena Giulia Clemente, Tao Wu, Hongbin Tan, Yong Wang, et al. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2022 This initiative examined systematically the extent to which a large set of archival research findings generalizes across contexts. We repeated the key analyses for 29 original strategic management effects in the same context (direct reproduction) as well as in 52 novel time periods and geographies; 45% of the reproductions returned results matching the original reports together with 55% of tests in different spans of years and 40% of tests in novel geographies. Some original findings were associated with multiple new tests. Reproducibility was the best predictor of generalizability—for the findings that proved directly reproducible, 84% emerged in other available time periods and 57% emerged in other geographies. Overall, only limited empirical evidence emerged for context sensitivity. In a forecasting survey, independent scientists were able to anticipate which effects would find support in tests in new samples.
A model to analyze the knowledge management risks in open innovation: proposition and application with the case of GOL Airlines Fábio Lotti Oliva, Andrei Carlos Torresani Paza, Jefferson Luiz Bution, Masaaki Kotabe, Peter Kelle, et al. Journal of Knowledge Management, 2022 Purpose This study aims to investigate the risks associated with managing the dispersed knowledge in inter-organizational arrangements for innovation. Specifically, it proposes a model to analyze the knowledge management risks in open innovation, applied in four steps. Design/methodology/approach Initially, the authors carried out a systematic literature review (SLR) on the concepts that connect knowledge management, inter-organizational arrangements for innovation and risks. The SLR results led to a complementary theoretical review on the conceptual elements in question. Based on the findings, the authors have developed a model to analyze the knowledge management risks in open innovation, which was validated by experts. It was then studied the case of GOL Airlines, a company that uses innovation to overcome the paradox between low-cost and full service in the commercial air transportation industry, considering the application and adjustment of the proposed model. Findings Open innovation is one of the inter-organizational arrangement types most applied in the context of innovation. Relations between agents are the primary sources of risks when managing the dispersed knowledge in these arrangements. The authors have found five main risks associated, namely, risk of the innovative effort does not reach the expected objective, risk of knowledge transfer being ineffective, risk of misappropriation of value, risk of dependency (lock-in) and risk of relations. Practical implications The practical implication is the proposition of a procedure for applying the model to analyze the knowledge management risks in open innovation, which makes it a prescriptive model for identifying risks. The proposed model is described in four steps, namely, to identify the agents in the environment of the value of open innovation; to identify the types of relations of each agent; to consider the barriers to knowledge management in innovation; and to assess the risks considering the possibilities derived from the agents, their relationships and the barriers. The model is applied in the GOL case and the results are presented. Originality/value First, it uses a novel approach to investigate open innovation while studying its risks. This approach considers the knowledge is dispersed and flows from one organization to another through a combination of relations inside the environment of value where the open innovation materializes. Second, it contributes to theory development by opening a research front that fuses four areas: risk management, knowledge management, innovation and inter-organizational arrangements. Third, this paper proposes a theoretical model and presents its operationalization. The study aims to make an impact beyond academia and uses a case study to illustrate the model application in a real and interesting open innovation project to support the business model at GOL Airlines.
Innovation in the main Brazilian business sectors: characteristics, types and comparison of innovation Fábio Lotti Oliva, Bárbara Ilze Semensato, Daniela Buzzulini Prioste, Eric Jacques Lucien Winandy, Jefferson Luiz Bution, et al. Journal of Knowledge Management, 2019 PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the innovation process of organizations representing the main sectors of Brazilian economic activity.Design/methodology/approachThe literature review focuses on analyzing the innovation process characteristics regarding the innovation types. The authors carried out interviews with executives and managers in charge of innovation at the leading large companies in the respective sectors analyzed. The data analysis of this qualitative research was structured in three steps. The first step is the analysis of data collected for encoding, the second step, the summarization of the common points presented by the companies in each sector and, finally, the interpretation of these data, aided by triangulation from secondary data that support the analysis of the collected primary data.FindingsThe main contribution of this study is to characterize the innovation process of organizations representing the main sectors of the Brazilian economy, with a classification regarding the sectoral innovation standard.Practical implicationsThe authors’ intent is that the paper can contribute with a comparative analysis among companies of the same sector and, subsequently, among companies of the different surveyed sectors. Thus, the characterization aims to present the companies’ innovation process and the comparative analysis aims to verify the innovation sectoral patterns. In addition, as implications for management practice, some strategies for better knowledge management in the organization are suggested for each type of innovation.Originality/valueThe main theoretical contribution focuses on the development of a conceptual model that structures the analyzed variables of the constructs “innovation process” and “innovation sectoral patterns”, allowing not only the characterization but also the comparative analysis of the representative organizations present in the sample.
