Hemanth H S, Pratham S Tantri, Poornima G Hiremath, Ajith P Arun, Sudeep Mudhulu, Jagadish H Patil, Raviraj Kusanur
International Journal of Sustainable Engineering, 2026
Rice straw’s biosorbent potential for fluoride remains underexplored. Few studies explored alkali pretreatment with TEOS functionalization, leaving clear gap, how dual modification boosts reactivity. In this work, rice straw is alkali-pretreated and TEOS-functionalised, producing silica-rich surface enhancing fluoride affinity. FTIR, SEM, and EDX confirmed hemicellulose removal, silica grafting, and adsorption‑enhancing structural changes. A Central Composite Design-based RSM framework comprising 30 batch experiments (50 mL per run) identified pH, dosage, and contact time as the most influential factors. Under optimised acidic conditions, the modified adsorbent achieved ~65% fluoride removal, with equilibrium behaviour following the Langmuir isotherm (qₐₓ = 100 mg g−1, R2 = 0.98) and kinetics governed by the pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.99), indicating a chemisorption-dominated, multi-step mechanism. This performance surpasses that of many biomass-derived adsorbents such as wheat straw (40.2%), sawdust (49.8%), activated bagasse carbon (56.4%), carbonised activated carbon (57.6%), and coffee-ground biochar (20.62%) which typically achieve only 20–60% fluoride removal under comparable conditions. FTIR, EDX, and storage observations confirmed TEOS‑modified rice straw remained structurally, functionally stable before and after adsorption. Overall, this study demonstrates a chemically enhanced, statistically optimised biosorbent from agricultural waste, mechanistically validated for integration into decentralised defluoridation units and deployment in fluoride‑affected regions.

    Processes, 2025
Thin films have become indispensable in shaping the landscape of modern and future technologies, offering versatile platforms where properties can be engineered at the atomic to microscale to deliver performance unattainable with bulk materials. Historically evolving from protective coatings and optical layers, the field has advanced into a highly interdisciplinary domain that underpins innovations in microelectronics, energy harvesting, optoelectronics, sensing, and biomedical devices. In this review, a structured approach has been adopted to consolidate the fundamentals of thin film growth and the governing principles of nucleation, surface dynamics, and interface interactions, followed by an in-depth comparison of deposition strategies such as physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition (ALD), and novel solution-based techniques, highlighting their scalability, precision, and application relevance. By critically evaluating experimental studies and technological implementations, this review identifies key findings linking microstructural evolution to device performance, while also addressing the pressing challenges of stability, degradation pathways, and reliability under operational stresses. The synthesis of evidence points to the transformative role of advanced deposition controls, in situ monitoring, and emerging AI-driven optimization in overcoming current bottlenecks. Ultimately, this work concludes that thin film technologies are poised to drive the next generation of sustainable, intelligent, and multifunctional devices, with emerging frontiers such as hybrid heterostructures, quantum materials, and bio-integrated systems charting the future roadmap.

2025 9th International Conference on Computational System and Information Technology for Sustainable Solutions Csitss 2025, 2025
The rapid expansion of electric mobility (emobility) has generated an urgent demand for sustainable, highefficiency, and environmentally-friendly energy storage options. Conventional lithium-ion (LIB) and emerging sodium-ion batteries (SIB) dominate this field; nonetheless, their widespread adoption faces increasing scrutiny due to the existence of toxic, flammable, and non-biodegradable organic electrolytes. This review extensively analyzes the development of sustainable electrolyte systems, encompassing aqueous, ionic liquid, solid-state, polymeric, and bio-derived electrolytescrafted for LIBs and SIBs. We evaluate their electrochemical stability ranges, ionic conductivities, compatibility with highvoltage electrodes, and thermal safety properties. The article emphasizes design methods that integrate sustainability with efficiency, featuring fluorine-free salts, solvent-free systems, and biodegradable polymer matrices. Sodium-ion technology is emphasized due to its elemental abundance and compatibility with aqueous and hybrid electrolytes, offering a more sustainable and geopolitically stable alternative to lithium. Additionally, the impacts of electrolyte toxicity, end-of-life recovery, and manufacturing scalability are evaluated from a life-cycle and techno-economic perspective. From a comparative viewpoint, we highlight the compromises between the goals of green chemistry and the measures of battery performance (energy density, cycle life, rate capability). The study concludes with a discussion on regulatory developments, industrial-scale advancements, and important future research directions essential for progressing toward safer, greener, and more circular e-mobility storage solutions.

Electric vehicles (EVs) play a major role in the worldwide change to sustainable energy systems. Their rapid expansion is driven not just by environmental policies but also by technological progress and increased consumer acceptance. The growth of EVs is intricately connected to various challenges and opportunities related to energy sustainability. This review provides an interdisciplinary integration of the fundamental scientific and engineering principles supporting this transition. In chemistry, advancements in battery materials, lithium-ion efficiency, solid-state alternatives, and the hydrogen fuel cells evolving role are reshaping the energy density and longevity potential of electric vehicles. In engineering, essential components like thermal management systems, powertrain control, and lightweight vehicle design enhance performance and safety. In the end, systems integration is essential for grid compatibility, smart charging systems, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) frameworks, and energy market economics, all affect feasible scalability. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the interrelated technological ecosystems that are shaping the future of electric mobility by integrating these domains. The goal is to inform researchers and policymakers about the challenges, partnerships, and innovative methods for achieving net-zero transportation. This synthesis highlights the urgent need for collaborative efforts across disciplines to accelerate innovation and ensure ongoing energy resiliency.

8th IEEE International Conference on Computational System and Information Technology for Sustainable Solutions Csitss 2024, 2024
This paper is a comprehensive review that explores the evolution and future potential of compact Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in addressing the pressing need for effective wastewater management. With the increasing urbanization and industrialization, traditional centralized sewage systems face challenges such as space constraints, high infrastructure costs, and inefficiencies in treatment processes. Compact STPs emerge as a viable alternative, offering advantages in ease of operation, adaptability, and customization to local needs. The paper discusses various technologies employed in compact STPs, including Biocarbon Aerated Filters (BAF), Green Roof Models, and advancements in nanotechnology and hydrothermal carbonization. These innovations enhance the efficiency of wastewater treatment by reducing biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and microbe levels, thereby contributing to environmental protection and resource recovery. The analysis also emphasizes the significance of proper design, maintenance, and scalability of compact STPs to meet future demands. This comprehensive review underscores the critical role of compact STPs in sustainable urban development and environmental conservation.
