  • Statistical analysis of principal components (PCA) in the study of the vulnerability of Heritage Churches
Isabel Turbay, Pilar Ortiz, Rocío Ortiz
    Procedia Structural Integrity, 2024
Built heritage is constantly at risk due to anthropogenic or natural threats. Its vulnerability involves factors related to construction form, state of conservation and urban pressure, for this reason the assessment of vulnerability depends largely on its conservation and restoration. Therefore, the identification of these factors and the analysis of the correlation between them can be an effective tool in the fulfilment of integrated plans focused on the preventive conservation of these buildings. This study focuses on churches built in America (Colombia and Guatemala) between the 16th and 18th centuries, which have been analysed by calculating a global vulnerability index. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was employed to obtain a better observation of the set of data and vulnerability indices to evaluate the behaviour of the factors that affect the model. This first approach by PCA allows to identify similarities and differences in the factors that affect the global vulnerability of each church and facilitate the prediction of typical future behaviours to establish prevention measures applicable to various buildings, moreover this study allowed to analysing the common characteristics and threats to help cultural heritage managers to propose preventive conservation measures applied to the maintenance of heritage buildings and the generation of urban policies focused on articulated plans in risk management, that included criteria based on sustainability and resilience.

Science and Digital Technology for Cultural Heritage Interdisciplinary Approach to Diagnosis Vulnerability Risk Assessment and Graphic Information Models Proceedings of the 4th International Congress Science and Technology for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage Technoheritage 2019, 2020
The present work try to analyze the concern of society in different historical cities about their cultural heritage in order to assess the relationship between the opinion of citizens and the vulnerability of monuments in historical cities. Anonymous surveys were carried out in four different cities: Seville, Osuna and Marchena (Spain) and Popayan (Colombia). According to the preliminary results, most of population asserts that it is important to preserve and to protect the cultural heritage of their cities; however, some of them believe that there is a low political involvement. The comparison of results between different cities allows beginning the assessment of the relationship between social diversity and the vulnerability of monuments. Nevertheless, further studies are necessary to establish the influence of reflective societies in the vulnerability of monuments in order to develop strategies for conservation of cultural heritage.
  • Quarry identification and characterization of 2nd century A.D. Roman granite columns from Ecija (Spain)

    Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry, 2019
Rock column is one of the most representative structural elements used in Roman buildings. Its main section is the shaft, a cylindrical conduit between the base and the chapiter. Their decontextualization sometimes makes it difficult their provenance. This is the case of granite shafts coming from the ancient Colonia Augusta Firma Astigi, nowadays Écija (Seville, Spain). In this paper, 52 pieces of granite shafts preserved both along the streets and in the Municipal History Museum of Écija have been studied, to understand the provenance of the granite used in its construction and the type of building where they were employed. An approximation of the granite composition based on the quantity of the main minerals was carried out by digital image analysis. This non-invasive technique allows us to identify the main characteristics of the granites according to their provenance. Additionally, the column heights were calculated according to Roman treatises of architecture. The combination of these techniques allowed us to determine the quarries of the granite columns. The results showed that 20 shafts may come from the Troad region (Turkey), which granite was one of the most commonly used in the Roman constructions on the provinces; although granite from other quarries, i.e. Gerena (Spain) or Forum (Egypt), might have been used in this city during the 2nd century AD too. The relationship between provenance of the granite and height of the column allows us to specify aspects referred to the magnification of buildings or the sponsors of the monumentalization of public spaces carried out in time of the Roman emperor Hadrian.
