Technology and Religious Tourism Emerging Trends Cases and Futuristic Perspectives, 2025
Abstract This research is aimed at examining the potential of digital information technology to enhance religious tourism particularly on Vihara or Buddhist temples in Bali. Given the significant influence that information technology has on market communication, including the manner in which potential tourists search for information related to a tourism destination or tourist attraction, this study sought to assess the extent to which digital information technology can be leveraged to promote religious tourism. The current research focused on the utilisation of online platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and the official website as promotional media to increase local and foreign tourist visits to the Vihara, as well as rising interest in religious tourism in the Denpasar area, Bali. This research employed a mixed-method descriptive approach, utilising interviews with several informants and questionnaires as data sources. The findings revealed that there is integration between the online platforms of the monastery, although there is still room for improvement in certain areas. Furthermore, the survey results indicate that the ability to take action in accordance with the AIDA model requires a significant investment of effort and commitment.

  • The integration of physical and digital experiences in ecotourism
    I Nengah Subadra
    Research in Hospitality Management, 2025
The integration of physical and digital experiences in ecotourism is reshaping ecotourism by enhancing visitor engagement and advancing sustainability practices. This study employs a grounded theory approach to investigate the impact of technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence-driven interactive platforms on ecotourism experiences. Three key themes emerged, including immersive engagement, environmental sustainability and digital adaptation. The findings demonstrate that physical and digital experiences in ecotourism significantly enrich the ecotourism experience by facilitating real-time environmental education, fostering deeper emotional connections with nature and reducing ecological footprints. However, challenges related to digital accessibility, concerns about authenticity and the need for greater community integration remain critical barriers. This research contributes to the discourse on smart and sustainable tourism by providing actionable insights for industry stakeholders and proposing a conceptual framework that integrates technological advancements with environmental consciousness. The study advocates for a more immersive, responsible and inclusive ecotourism paradigm, offering a foundation for future research and practice in this evolving field.
  • Toxic Tourists in Paradise – Bali_ Cultural Disrespects, Crimes, and Misconducts
    I Nengah Subadra
    Tourism and Hospitality Research, 2025
Bali is a popular tourist destination well-known for its natural beauty, cultural diversity and hospitality. However, not all tourists respect the local culture, environment and laws of the destination. This study aims to explore and understand the behaviours of toxic tourists in Bali who engage in activities such as cultural disrespect, drug smuggling, cybercrime, murder, visa abuse and traffic violations. This research adopted qualitative approach and employed semi-structured interviews key-informants and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving local residents, community leaders, tourism stakeholders and law enforcement officers in Bali and observations as well as documentation of published news in reputed national news agencies. The findings reveal that toxic tourism poses a serious threat to the sustainability of the destination which divided into three dimensions including cultural integrity, legal framework, and social structure. This study presents a distinctive contribution and offers innovative insights into the interplay between cultural preservation, legal governance, and community resilience within mass tourism contexts. It reveals shortcomings in current tourism management practices in addressing toxic behaviours and proposes actionable recommendations, such as stricter law enforcement, community-led education programmes, and the incorporation of cultural sensitivity into tourism policies. These managerial implications provide a framework for destinations facing similar challenges. Additionally, the study advocates for longitudinal research to evaluate the long-term effects of toxic tourism and the effectiveness of mitigation strategies that advances both academic and practical understanding of sustainable tourism management.

The study also identifies the benefits and challenges of FLW management for the restaurant and its stakeholders. • Examining the Tour Guides’ Rights and Obligations Inequities: The Case of Bali Cultural Tourism Destination

Anthropology of Tourism Exploring the Social and Cultural Intersection, 2024
The human rights of tourists occupy a central position in the correct functioning of the tourism industry. It is not otiose to say that tourists are important key players in the industry and their safety and security should be warranted by the police as well as security forces. Under some conditions, this security-safety is not only violated but also tourists are targets of political violence, harassment, and xenophobia. Over the last World Cup in Qatar, I planned to meet an American friend, an academician who flew to Buenos Aires. He is scheduled to depart on the 18th of December, the day of the final match between Argentina and France. The meeting should be canceled because his integrity would be hampered during the match. Just after the Malvinas-Falklands War, in the core of Argentina, there is a strong anti-Briton sentiment which is expressed by Argentinians in different riots, protests, and sports events. This hostility is not only directed against Britons but also generalized to other English native speakers such as Canadians, Americans, or Australians [or even members of the Commonwealth]. This chapter is inspired by the urgency to discuss a topic that is sometimes denied by academia: the ethnic formation and 132hostility against some ethnic or national minorities. The integrity of tourists is an essential part of their rights.
  • Pecalang and tourism resilience in Bali: Evolution from local customary guard to international security force
    I. Nengah Subadra
Tourism Safety Security and Resilience Integrated Community Based Approaches, 2024
This study explores the vital role of Pecalang – a local Balinese customary guard in promoting tourism resilience on the island of Bali. Pecalang has historically preserved cultural traditions, maintained order, and protected sacred sites during religious events. However, with the rapid growth of Bali’s tourism industry, Pecalang has adapted its traditional role to become an international security force in response to the needs of modern tourism. This study seeks to understand how Pecalang have transitioned from local cultural custodians to a force that also addresses the security needs of an international tourism-related event. The problem encompasses the challenges and implications of this transition for both the Pecalang and the tourism industry in Bali. The research applies qualitative method wherein the data were collected through face-to-face interviews with Pecalang, police officers, chief of traditional village and the tourism industries that organized the events. The study revealed that Pecalang faced complex challenges in transforming its natural roles into global roles and forming partnerships and collaborations with government agencies and national and international security networks to support Bali’s tourism resilience. The study highlighted the importance of employing local wisdom and institutions to develop sustainable and culturally sensitive approaches to tourism resilience. It also suggested that Pecalang need to work towards ensuring that Bali’s culture and tourism industries are sustainable and can withstand any future challenges.
