  • TIME DOMAIN SIMULATIONS OF OVERHEAD TRANSMISSION LINES USING A CUSTOM REAL AND CONSTANT TRANSFORMATION MATRIX
Pablo Torrez Caballero, Felipe P. De Albuquerque, Ronaldo F. R. Pereira, Eduardo C. M. Da Costa, José Humberto A. Monteiro, Wanderley Araújo De Castro Júnior
IECON Proceedings Industrial Electronics Conference, 2024
Modal transformation is widely used in the transient analysis of power systems. Some applications of modal transformation are in fault location and protection sizing in smart grid and transmission networks. While some techniques such as the Universal Line Model use it indirectly, other techniques use modal transformation to represent multiconductor systems directly in the time domain e.g. the lumped parameter model. Time domain simulations require real and constant transformation matrices. The direct implementation of modal transformation matrices in time domain simulations is not trivial because they are frequency-dependent. Techniques such as Vector Fitting can be used to fit frequency-dependent data into time-domain simulations. This paper uses direct search algorithms to find an optimal real and frequency-constant transformation matrix. The presented results demonstrate that the proposed approach leads to accurate time domain simulations in lines with vertical, symmetrical, and asymmetrical configurations.
  • Estimation of the electrical parameters of overhead transmission lines using Kalman Filtering with particle swarm optimization
Ronaldo F. R. Pereira, Felipe P. Albuquerque, Luisa Helena B. Liboni, Eduardo C. Marques Costa, José Humberto A. Monteiro
Iet Generation Transmission and Distribution, 2023
The parameter estimation for transmission systems is important to power flow analysis, planning the expansion of electric power systems, stability, dispatch and economic analysis. This type of task is developed through systems identification methods, being the least squares method and its variations the most common techniques to obtain the transmission line parameters. However, these techniques have some disadvantages, such as non‐recursive parameter estimation or the availability of an ideally transposed line, in order to address a problem with symmetric matrices, which simplifies the estimation process. In this paper, a non‐linear method (Extended Kalman Filter) is presented to obtain the states of the transmission line terminals jointly with the vectorized matrix of parameters; such approach is strongly affected by the initial conditions; these conditions are usually obtained manually, which requires a lot of time and effort. Therefore, an optimization method (Particle Swarm Optimization) is applied in order to improve the convergence of the EKF, which reduces the time for adjusting the hyper‐parameters and improves the estimated results. The proposed method showed accurate results for non‐transposed systems, and also in comparison with results obtained from the same EKF‐based method without the proposed optimization technique.
  • Transient overcurrents in bipolar CSC-HVDC transmission line with superconducting fault current limiter
Wanderley A. de Castro Junior, Thiago M. de Lima, Ronaldo F. R. Pereira, Jose H. A. Monteiro, Eduardo C. M. Da Costa
2021 14th IEEE International Conference on Industry Applications Induscon 2021 Proceedings, 2021
This article aims to evaluate the operation of superconducting fault limiters (SFCL) in high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) systems based on current source type converters (CSC-HVDC) under fault due to a short circuit polo and polo-terra. To this end, a transmission system CSCHVDC and an SFCL were modeled in the PSCAD / EMTDC software. Faults on the inverter side and current measurements were applied in cases with and without SFCL. The results presented show an attenuation in the magnitude of the fault current and in the resulting transient, reducing the magnitude of the fault current by up to 30 %, indicating that the insertion of superconducting fault limiters is an effective alternative for the protection of transmission lines. high voltage direct current.
  • Retrofit project of the interior lighting systems of the Rio Branco Campus of the Federal University of Acre: A study of the technical and economic aspects
Wanderley Araujo de Castro, Jose Humberto Araujo Monteiro
Sbse 2018 7th Brazilian Electrical Systems Symposium, 2018
The topic of energy efficiency has been increasingly discussed in universities, supporting the development of products and projects that result in the reduction of energy consumption. In this work, the retrofit of the lighting system of the Campus Rio Branco of the Federal University of Acre will be proposed. This project represents an option for reducing the electricity bill and simultaneously maintaining or even improving the lighting conditions on the Campus. The retrofit project was prepared according to the procedures described in the Manual of the Procedures of the Energy Efficiency Program (PROPEE). The applied methodology consists of the following steps: definition of the study site, survey of existing lighting systems, stratification of existing lamps by type and power, sampling and verification of instantaneous power of previously collected lamps, definition of equivalent LED lamp and project energy efficiency. The existing lighting system is composed of tubular fluorescent lamps and compact fluorescent lamps, totaling 15475 lamps, distributed in nominal powers of 15W, 18W, 32W, 36W and 40W. The LED lamps selected for the purpose of replacement have parameters suitable for the application of the ABNT IEC 8995-1 standard, designed to carry out lighting projects. The results show that the energy saved by replacing the lamps corresponds to 320.067MWh/year.

2010 30th International Conference on Lightning Protection Iclp 2010, 2017
Cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning variables, space and time distributions near the equator, over Eastern Amazon, were analyzed in this work. Over seven million lightning flash events of this type, detected by a VAISALA sensor network operated by the Brazilian Amazon Protection System (SIPAM) between 2006 and 2008 were processed. The results show the sub-areas of higher frequency of occurrences, as well as the monthly and hourly distributions of CG lightning polarity type, current peak intervals for this region. The regional values of the CG lightning parameters should be taken into consideration on electric and telecommunication systems protection projects, against atmospheric electric discharges in the Amazon Region.

This study presents a simplified formulation to calculate the skin effect on transmission lines wires. The methodology is developed from the solution of the time‐domain Maxwell's wave equations whose frequency‐domain solutions are obtained using Fourier transforms. Results obtained from the proposed formulation are compared with those calculated using the conventional method based on the approach by Bessel functions. The proposed skin‐effect formulation is also validated based on electromagnetic transients simulations in the time domain considering a conventional 69‐kV transmission system.
  • A First approach on the new transmission system in northern Brazil
    E.C.M. Costa, J.H.A. Monteiro, A.J.G. Pinto, S. Kurokawa, J.L. Franco, J. Pissolato
    Iet Conference Publications, 2011
This article shows an analysis of the electrical parameters of a three-phase transmission line section using a relatively new design for steel towers characterized by 280 meters high. These main features, the height of the line conductors and distance between them, are intrinsically related to the longitudinal and transversal parameters of the line. By this means, an analysis was carried out in order to show the electrical variations between a transmission line using the new technology and a conventional 440-kV line through a wide range of frequencies and a variable soil resistivity. © 2012 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Arthur da Costa Almeida, Paulo Luiz Contente Barros, Jose Humberto Araujo Monteiro, Brigida Ramati Pereira da Rocha
    IEEE Latin America Transactions, 2009
This paper proposes an integrated methodology for estimating aboveground forest biomass in Amazon region. It is based on remote sensing, artificial neural networks and geographical information systems technologies for achieving confident results with a lesser cost than traditional methods of forest inventory. This methodology was tested and validated in Tucurui Reservoir, Brazil.
