Sociology of Dalit women: a micro-level study of self-help groups in India Harinath Silveru, Laxman Rao Sankineni Discover Global Society, 2025 This study explores the neoliberal perspective on the social inclusion of women, highlighting the shift from mandatory benefits to the voluntary use of resources. It examines the role of successive governments in promoting women's empowerment through self-esteem, financial inclusion, and social integration, especially for those from marginalized communities. Over four decades, the focus has been on organising women into SHGs as a strategy for financial inclusion and addressing social issues. However, in the last fifteen years, there has been a pivot towards less government intervention, emphasizing self-governance and community involvement. This article presents an empirical study involving 10,213 households from the Scheduled Castes (SCs) across 33 districts in Telangana state, focusing on the functioning of SC Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Using a multi-stage stratified sampling method, households from rural and urban settings were selected. The extensive study examined three questions: (i) whether the socio-economic context of the Dalits is conducive to taking up economic activity; (ii) what the operational dynamics of SHGs are and their impact on economic activities, household welfare, and women's social empowerment; (iii) whether small-scale economic activity could withstand the open market system.

Pottery in Telangana: Empirical Evidence of Current and Future Challenges Harinath Silveru, Laxman Rao Sankineni South Asia Research, 2024 This article presents and discusses empirical evidence of the socio-economic status of the Kummari potter community in Telangana to highlight the continued primacy of the traditional caste-based occupation as a livelihood option for many Kummari households. Taking a holistic perspective, the research documents the current challenges faced by the community, covering the entire cycle of pottery-making, including input sourcing, production, adoption of new technology and marketing. The article also identifies core policy interventions that need urgent attention in the form of state support, complemented with collectivisation, technology diffusion and capacity-building of the artisans.
Dalits and Choice of School: A Sociological Study of Private Schools in Telangana State Silveru Harinath, Nagaraju Gundemeda Sociological Bulletin, 2021 Why parents prefer private schools when the government schools provide education free of cost is the major question confronting the social scientists in contemporary India. What constitutes school choice and what is the nature of the relationship between the socio-economic background of the children studying in government and private schools are some of the key research questions addressed in this article. What is the response of the Dalits towards government and private schools, as most of the previous empirical studies are based on government schools? The current article, based on an empirical study conducted in private schools in Telangana, argues that caste, class and gender play a significant role in shaping school choice among the Dalits. Though a Dalit middle-class parent provides equal opportunity for his/her daughter on par with a son, working-class Dalit parents prefer a private school for sons and a government school for daughters. As English as medium of instruction provided in private schools is perceived as a standard of quality, and, therefore, the aspired option tends to attract Dalits to private schools, they experience the paradoxical situation. On the one hand, they are not happy with the functioning of government schools; on the other, they find it extremely difficult to cope up with the multiple demands of private schools such as higher fees and hidden forms of discrimination on the lines of caste and class.
