Feed ingredients need to be managed well to maximize quail production potential. In addition to having the right amount and quality of nutrients to maximize egg production, that feed can serve as a source of phytobiotics to help maintain health. The butterfly pea (Clitoria Ternatea), which has flowers that has vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds, is one feed that can be used as a source of phytobiotics. The study was conducted to determine the quantity and quality of eggs produced by laying quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) by adding butterfly flower (BF) flour to diets as a source of phytobiotics. At total of 180 laying quails were treated in this study, which 6 treatments with 3 replicates. Experimental diets were offered ad libitum and water were available at all time. The study was resulted highly significant (P<0.01) affected quail day production(QDP) and index of yolk color. Whereas feed intake and feed conversion ratio were found to be significantly (P<0.05) affected. Egg weight, egg index, egg yolk, yolk index, egg albumen, shell weight, and shell thickness, however, were not significantly (P>0.05) impacted. Butterfly flower (Clitoria Ternatea) flour can be used as a natural phytobiotics and can increase the number of eggs and the yolk’s color score without affecting the physical quality of the eggs. - Response of sea grapes (Caulerpa sp.) in diets on laying hens performance and egg quality

This study aims to determine the effect of dietary sea grapes (Caulerpa sp.) on laying hen performance and egg quality. Forty strain Lohmann layers of 56 weeks of age were randomly divided into five treatments. Each treatment consisted of four replicates, and each replicate used two chickens. The dietary treatments were assigned to the control group (T0 0% Caulerpa sp., T1 0.5% Caulerpa sp., T2 1% Caulerpa sp., T3 1.5% Caulerpa sp., and T4 2% Caulerpa sp.). The treatment diets were comprised of iso energy (2,900 ME kcal/kg) and iso protein (18%). Feed and drinking water were available ad libitum. Twenty hundred eggs were collected to measure the external and internal egg quality. The data collected included egg production (laying rate), egg mass, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), external egg quality (weight eggs, shell thickness), and internal egg quality (eggshell component, albumen height, yolk height, yolk color, and yolk antioxidant). A complete experiment was studied in four weeks. After analyzing the data statistically using a one-way ANOVA, we proceeded with the Tukey test to further examine the results. The results showed that dietary Caulerpa sp. until the 2% level did not affect laying hen performance or egg quality; however, 1.5% Caulerpa sp. reduced FCR and had high antioxidant activity. - Performance and Egg Quality of Laying Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) Given Chitosan-Oligosaccharide as Prebiotic

A study was conducted to determine the effect of selenium (sodium selenite) added to palm kernel cake (PKC) before fermentation on production, selenium content, and quality of eggs. The PKC was added with 0.1% sodium selenite and 1% baking yeast (Fermipan®). The mixture was added with ster-ile distilled water to increase the water content of the substrate. The substrates were fermented at room temperature for 5 days. The fermented products of selenium-rich fermented palm kernel cake (SRFPKC) were dried and fed to the laying hens. The experimental diets used were T-0: without SRF-PKC, T-1: 0.25% SRFPKC, T-2: 0.50% SRFPKC, T-3: 0.75% SRFPKC and T-4: 1.0 % SRFPKC. The diets were given to 180 laying hens aged 22 weeks for 14 weeks. Data on egg production, feed intake and feed conversion ratio were recorded. Feed digestibilities of dry matter and protein were measured based on the method of total fecal collection. Egg qualities and egg weight loss were done using eggs stored for 1 and 30 days. Selenium and cholesterol contents of eggs were also measured. This study used a completely randomized design and was analyzed by analysis of variance. The results showed that the addition of SRFPKC increased egg production, hen day, egg weight, egg selenium, feed digest-ibility, improve FCR (P<0.05) and inhibit the process of decreasing the quality and weight of eggs stored for 30 days (P<0.05). In conclusion, the addition of SRFPKC increased egg production, feed digestibility, and egg selenium, improve FCR and slow down the deterioration of egg quality stored for 30 days. - Effects of addition chitosan-oligosaccharide of snail shell in the diet on quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) performance and carcass characteristics

It is well documented that feed additives improve livestock productivity through improving feed intake, feed efficiency, and livestock health status. Oligosaccharide is categorized as a prebiotic additive that can modify the microbial ecosystem in the small intestine by creating an environment that is more favorable for nonpathogenic bacteria’s growth. Current research investigates the effects of chitosan-oligosaccharide (COS) from snail shells in the diet on quail performance and carcass characteristics. A total of 100 female DOQ were placed in a Completely Randomized Design, five treatments and four replicates with five birds for each replicate and were kept under standard management conditions for six weeks. Basal diet consisted of corn, rice bran, soybean, fish meal, coconut oil, minerals, methionine, and lysine, and was mixed in such a way to achieve 22% protein. Treatments were the basal diet without feed additive (T1) as the negative control, the basal diet with 28 ppm preparation of lactate acid bacteria, LAB (T2) as the positive control, the basal diet with 200 ppm of COS (T3), the basal diet with 400 ppm of COS (T4), and the basal diet with 600 ppm of COS (T5). The birds were having free access to the diets and drinking water. Bird’s weight and feed intake were recorded weekly. At the end of the experiment, two birds from each cage were selected and slaughtered for carcass assessment and weight digestive organ. The variables are feed intake, live weight gain, feed conversion ratio, carcass yield, breast meat weight, and organ weight. The data were analyzed by using Anova and comparison tests using the Duncan test. The results revealed that the addition of COS in the diet significantly reduced (P<0.05) feed intake, carcass yield, and dressing percentage and improved (P<0.05) feed conversion ratio, liver, and two ceca (P<0.05). Other parameters were not different (P>0.05) between treatments. Therefore, it could be concluded that the inclusion of chitosan-oligosaccharide (COS) in the diet improved quail performance by enhancing feed efficiency. - Coconut (Cocos nucifera) and Salak (Salacca zalacca) polysaccharides in the diets of Escherichia coli-challenged broilers

Palm polysaccharides were believed to contain mannose monosaccharides that are beneficial as an antibiotic replacer for poultry. This experiment was conducted to study the effect of coconut and salak polysaccharides on growth performance, excreta dry matter, digestibility, and bursa of Fabricius weight of E. coli challenged broilers. A total of 140-day old unsexed broiler Cobb chicks were used as experimental birds for 4 weeks. During the first week, the chicks were allocated in five brooder pens and transferred into 20 pens on day 8. The broiler chicks were offered 5 different experimental rations. The rations were control basal diet (T1), basal diet added with antibiotic avilamycin (T2), basal diet added with commercial yeast oligosaccharides (T3), basal added with coconut polysaccharides (T4), and basal diet added with Salak (snake fruit) polysaccharides (T5). To protect the birds from New Castle diseases, vaccination was done on day 3. On day 14, the birds were challenged against E. coli for three consecutive days. Plastic feeders and drinkers were put in the pen. The experiment used a completely randomized design with five different rations, four replicate pens of 7 birds each. The data were subjected to the analysis of variance. Any significant differences detected in the variance analysis were then tested with the least significant difference test. Results indicated that after challenged with E. coli, birds fed the basal diet had lower body weight gain, mortality, excreta dry matter, and carcass percentage, but higher in FCR and bursa of Fabricius weight than the birds fed T2, T3, T4, and T5 diets. Feed intake of the E. coli challenged broilers were lower than those of broilers fed the T3 diet. Feed digestibility was not affected by the treatment diets. In conclusion, the addition of feed additives either antibiotic or palm polysaccharides could enhance the growth performance, carcass percentage, and excreta dry matter of the E. coli challenged broilers. - Blood profile and nutrients digestibility of native chickens fed functional diets with different energy and protein level

This study aimed to determine the blood profile, pH value of the small intestine and nutrient digestibility of native chickens fed functional diets with different energy and protein levels. The study used 192 DOC of native chickens with rearing up to 14 weeks old. The study was designed in a factorial completely randomized design with two factors. The first factor was the energy level (E1 = 2,800 kcal, E2 = 3,000 kcal), and the second factor was the protein level (P1 = 18%; P2 = 19%; P3 = 20%; P4 = 21%), each treatment had 4 replications. The feed ingredients used as functional feed in the ingredients of the ration i.e. yellow corn, rice bran, fish meal, soybeans grain, moringa leaves flour, turmeric flour, and Topmix® with the feed composition according to the treatment applied. Blood sampling, measurement of pH duodenum segment of the small intestine, and measurement of nutrient digestibility were performed on chickens after 12 weeks of age. The variables observed were blood profile, small intestinal pH, and nutrient digestibility. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance according to the design applied. The results showed that the effect of interaction between energy and protein level had a non-significant effect (P>0.05) on blood profile (hemoglobin, leucocyte, erythrocytes, platelets), small intestine pH, and nutrient digestibility. Similarly, also found the influence of a single factor of each energy and protein level. However, the treatments influenced a significant effect (P<0.05) on hematocrit and blood bilirubin values, and a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on total blood cholesterol. The study concluded that energy levels and protein levels had influenced significantly on blood profile, but not in pH intestine and nutrient digestibility. - Coconut meal as a feed ingredient and source of prebiotic for poultry

The low quality protein of coconut meal, coupled with high fibre content, leads to limited use of this agricultural by-product in the poultry diet. Attempts to maximize the amount of coconut meal included in the broiler feed have been made through amino acids supplementation, enzyme addition and pelleting coconut meal. Among these feed technologies and manipulation, pelleting coconut meal appears to be more powerful in promoting the growth of broiler chickens. The reasons for the improvement of broiler growth due to pelleting coconut meal have not been established yet. The mechanisms of improved growth of birds might be through increased feed intake, less energy spent and increased bulk density. Coconut meal contains a high concentration of mannose – based polysaccharides or mannan. This substance has long been believed to have prebiotic properties due to its capability to bind certain species of pathogenic bacteria in the digestive tract of birds. Voluminous reports of the positive effects of mannose-based polysaccharides from yeast have been published. Mannose –based polysaccharides from legumes, on the other hand, have been reported to have anti-nutrient property. Surprisingly, mannose-based polysaccharides from coconut behave like yeast mannan. A number of current studies indicated that mannose based polysaccharides improved body weight gain and feed digestibility. The growth of birds was negatively impacted when the birds were challenged against pathogenic bacteria of E. coli. Wet droppings and diarrhea incidences were not found in E. coli-challenged birds when the diets were supplemented with coconut mannan. In conclusions, coconut meal can be used as a feed ingredient for poultry unless the coconut meal was pelleted or enzymatically treated. Mannose-based polysaccharide from coconut was effective to promote growth and acted as prebiotic. - Fermented Coconut Dregs Quality and Their Efects on the Performance of Broiler Chickens

This study was conducted to determine the effects of the fermentation duration of coconut dregs (CD) by Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the addition of ammonium sulfate on the growth performance, feed digestibility, carcass, and digestive organ developments. A finely ground CD was autoclaved at 20 psi for 20 minutes and added distilled water to meet 80% moisture content. The autoclaved substrate was added with different concentrations of ammonium sulfate and fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae to produce Saccharomyces cerevisiae-fermented CD. A total of 192 day-old-unsexed Cobb broiler chicks were used and kept for 6 weeks. The birds were fed experimental diets ad-libitum. The experimental diets were produced by two durations of fermentation (5 days and 7 days) and three levels of ammonium sulfate (0%, 0.2%, and 0.4%) in 4 replicates. The experimental diets were offered ad-libitum and water were available at all times. Fermentation decreased lipid and crude fiber content of CD and the addition of ammonium sulfate increased protein content and amino acid concentration of CD. The bodyweight gain of birds increased when the CD was fermented for 5 days and with the addition of 0.2% ammonium sulfate. Dry matter digestibility and protein digestibility were improved when CD was added with 0.2% ammonium sulfate. In conclusion, fermenting CD for 5 days increased body weight gain and the addition of 0.2% ammonium sulfate improved the feeding value of the diet and growth of birds. - Antibacterial and Antioxidant Activities of Ethanol Extracts of Cocoa Husk (Theobroma cacao L.) with Maltodextrine in Various Concentration

Cocoa husk ((Theobroma cacao L.) has antioxidant and antimicrobial activity which has the potential as a natural preservative of food, but in its use the cocoa rind extract has a disadvantage because of its short shelf life and limited application to foodstuffs, therefore prevent damage and extend the shelf life, one of the efforts that can be done is to encapsulate the extract. This study aims to determine the antibacterial and antioxidant activity of encapsulated cocoa peel extract, this study begins with the treatment of extraction of cacao pods with ethanol solvent by comparison of cacao pods powder : 1: 4 solvent. Cocoa husk used are yellow harvested fruits, then chopped and dried to form flour. The sample was extracted by maceration with ethanol solvent. Antioxidant testing was carried out by DPPH method, while the antibacterial test was carried out by well diffusion method. This study used a completely randomized design method (CRD) with 5 treatments using a maltodextrin concentration of 20% (M1); 30% (M2); 40% (M3); 50% (M4) and 60% (M5) and repeated 3 times.This study concluded that encapsulant extract of cocoa husk using maltodextrin 20% had the highest antioxidant and antimicrobial activity compared to other treatments, namely 30% concentration; 40%; 50% and 60% but for treatment 20% and 30% there is no difference. Ethanol extracts of fruit peels can be made in the form of encapsulants which are very likely to be used as natural preservatives.
