  • Constructing ‘Gujaratiness’: a critical analysis of identity framing in pre-revival Gujarati cinema (1932–2011)
Gururaj Devarhubli, Amit Kumar Kashyap, Tomar Anjani Singh
    Cogent Arts and Humanities, 2026
The Gujarati film industry (Dhollywood), dating back to 1932, has experienced significant critical and commercial resurgence since 2011, marked by National Award wins and successful pan-Indian adaptations. However, this revival has followed decades of creative stagnation. This study critically examined the representation of regional identity in 50 commercially successful Gujarati films released between 1932 and 2011. Employing qualitative content analysis guided by the theoretical framework of agenda-setting, priming, and framing, this research deconstructs the cinematic construction of ‘Gujaratiness’. The findings reveal a consistent and hegemonic identity frame that is overwhelmingly rural, Hindu, and traditional, prominently featuring Saurashtrian settings, Rajput communities, and cultural symbols such as Garba. We argue that this framing was not an organic cultural expression but heavily influenced by industrial factors, particularly a state subsidy policy that incentivised formulaic productions for a niche rural audience. This has led to a disconnect between urban viewers and an industry-wide identity crisis. The study concludes that the pre-revival era’s narrow framing ultimately proved unsustainable, establishing the stage for thematic diversification and industrial renewal that characterizes Dhollywood’s contemporary comeback.
  • Interdisciplinarity Research in Sustainability: A 15 Year Bibliometric Analysis of Sustainability Journal
, Gururaj Devarhubli, Amit Kumar Kashyap, , Anjani Singh Tomar, and
Grassroots Journal of Natural Resources, 2025
In 2024, Sustainability celebrates its 15th year of publication. To commemorate this milestone, this study presents a retrospective bibliometric analysis of the journal, utilizing data from the Scopus database. Through a range of bibliometric tools, we analyze Sustainability’s growth in terms of publication and citation impact. Citation data mainly were retrieved from Elsevier's Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, comprising scientific journals, books, and conference proceedings. Additionally, data on the most downloaded articles were obtained from Sustainability’s official website. The most cited articles in Sustainability were identified along with the most prolific authors. As of 2023, Sustainability has achieved a CiteScore (CS) of 6.8 — an impressive 485% increase from its initial CS of 1.4 in 2011. The journal is indexed under multiple subject categories in Scopus, ranking as follows: Computer Networks and Communications – 95th out of 395 journals; Computer Science (miscellaneous) – 17th out of 133 journals; Energy Engineering and Power Technology - 69th out of 272 journals; Environmental Science (miscellaneous) – 36th out of 219 journals; Geography, Planning and Development – 94th out of 821 journals; Hardware and Architecture – 46th out of 177 journals; Management, Monitoring, Policy and Law – 89th out of 399 journals; and Renewable Energy, Sustainability and the Environment – 97th out of 270 journals. Since its inception in 2009, Sustainability has published 65,636 articles from scholars worldwide, with the highest contributions from China and the United States. The journal has primarily published sustainability studies in various aspects, with a predominant emphasis on quantitative methodologies. Although widely used in academia, bibliometric methods might also prove useful in sustainability jurisprudence, such as helping people understand the publication trends in scholarly sustainability journals.
  • Can copyright protection be extended to tattoos and body art? Analyzing the issues, challenges and framing a possible solution in light of the Indian and US copyright protection regimes
    Anjani Singh Tomar, Gururaj Devarhubli
    Cogent Social Sciences, 2025
This study explores the potential expansion of copyright protection for tattoos and body art and the associated challenges. The fundamental principles of copyright law are first examined, along with how they relate to the creative character of tattoos and body art. The paper then discusses issues such as originality, ownership and fixation before diving into the difficulties and legal hurdles that arise when considering the copyrighting of tattoos. Additionally, it explores the ramifications of protecting copyright rights over tattoos, as well as the difficulties of managing copyright and infringement from a legal and practical standpoint. Furthermore, it examines how trademark and design protection overlap with traditional copyright protections. This paper concludes with recommendations and suggestions aimed at enhancing and clarifying the legal environment for tattoos and suggesting potential solutions to better balance the rights of tattoo artists, recipients and other parties.
  • Ten years of the Cogent Social Sciences: a bibliometric analysis

    Cogent Social Sciences, 2025
Cogent Social Sciences (CSS) is a top worldwide journal in the field of social sciences that aims to encourage the discovery of linkages between disciplines and communities. This article follows the CSS journal from its inception in 2015 until 2024, when it will celebrate 10 years of publication. Its objective is to find journal trends in published articles, authors, the most productive institutions and nations, research themes, and citation patterns (most cited papers and typology of cited articles). Bibliometric analysis was performed, and the Scopus database provided the data necessary to apply bibliometric markers. A variety of bibliometric methods indicate that the journal has dramatically expanded in terms of articles and references from throughout the world; nevertheless, most of these contributions originate in South Africa and Indonesia. The journal has published conceptual articles by writers who predominantly use qualitative methodologies. The authors formulated a visual mapping of bibliometric data by applying software to visualise similarities, which showed that the culture of collaboration among authors has evolved. These graphs show the correlations among keywords, citations, journal co-citations, and co-citation analysis. The findings demonstrate that the journal has experienced substantial expansion over the years, with an increase in both the quantity and variety of published articles and citations received. This expansion helped the journal achieve a good trajectory in terms of its influence and exposure in the field. A notable trend is the increasing geographical diversity of the publications. The journal’s primary focus is on accounting, management, business, environmental sciences, and social sciences.

  • Do software payments amount to royalties? Tracing the answer in the context of the engineering analysis case and proposing an alternative model
Gururaj Devarhubli, Yogendra Batra, Alaukik Shrivastava
    Cogent Social Sciences, 2023
After almost two decades of litigation characterizing software payments for income taxation, the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India delivered a judgment on a batch of over a hundred appeals before it. The judgment respited the taxpayers. The present article analyzes the various arguments presented by the taxpayers and the Revenue Department and tests their applicability on the touchstone of International and Indian legal provisions and the established understanding of copyright law. The article concludes that the impact of copyright law on taxation cannot be avoided and any exploitation of copyright leading to income-generation is subject to tax. However, instead of bypassing copyright laws, a correct interpretation of the nuances of copyright laws would lead to more effective and less debilitating results.
