  • Enhanced structural performance of reinforced cement concrete beams using lightweight foam bricks with deep learning prediction
    Thivya J, Iyappan G, Vijayaraghavan J
European Journal of Environmental and Civil Engineering, 2025
Concrete, as the most widely used construction material globally, faces challenges in replacement projects due to complexities in material mixing and its environmental impact. This study explores the use of lightweight materials such as fly ash, foaming agents, and expanded perlite to improve the performance of concrete and brick applications. Specifically, it investigates their impact on compressive strength, water absorption, and thermal conductivity. A key component of this research is the application of a Convolutional Neural Network to predict the structural behaviour of Reinforced Cement Concrete beams incorporating these lightweight materials. The experimental program includes tests to assess compressive strength, water absorption, and thermal conductivity of foam bricks and concrete mixes, as well as simulations for load deflection and crack propagation in RCC beams. The Convolutional Neural Network is trained to predict key structural responses, such as deflection, crack initiation, and failure load, based on material properties, beam dimensions, and load conditions. The model’s performance is evaluated using experimental data, with performance metrics including a Mean Absolute Error of 0.025 and a Root Mean Square Error of 0.037. Experimental demonstrate that lightweight foam bricks, particularly Brick CCFE15 (Cement and Fly Ash; Foam or Foaming Agent; 15% expanded perlite by weight), provide a feasible alternative to conventional concrete, reducing dead load without significantly compromising structural strength. Concrete specimens show promising performance in terms of compressive strength over various curing periods. The findings support the integration of lightweight infill materials in Reinforced Cement Concrete beams, significantly enhancing structural efficiency, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Experimental Investigation of Fly Ash-Based Foam Bricks: Sustainable Mix Design and Its Performance

    Advances in Civil Engineering, 2025
The growing influence of green building materials has increased the pace in terms of utilizing industrial byproducts like fly ash as alternative materials to the normal clay bricks in construction. This study provides an elaborate experimental study of the fly‐ash‐foam bricks with the aim of reducing environmental challenges posed by the brick manufacturing processes that are energy and carbon‐demanding. This paper investigates how the proportion of different fly ash and foaming agents affects these key performance parameters: compressive strength, water absorption, efflorescence, and dry density. Results show that when a 1:2 mix ratio was used without a foaming agent, the compressive strength peaked at 10.595 N/mm 2 , and the compressive strength was lower at 5.43 N/mm 2 when a foaming agent was added because of higher internal porosity. Water absorption was also increased in the presence of the foaming agent to 12.75% in foamed mixes as compared to 3.55% in unfoamed specimens. Furthermore, the dry density of wet mix had dropped to 1482.2 and 938.7 kg/m 3 in the dense mix and the 1:4 foamed mix, respectively, with an intermediate increase in efflorescence. These findings carry an importance of balancing the blend composition to achieve a balance between low weight and sufficient mechanical integrity, and advance the use of fly‐ash‐based foam bricks as a feasible, sustainable material in modern construction activities.

  • Suitability of partial replacement of pulverized plastic as fine aggegate in cement concrete

Indian Journal of Science and Technology, 2016
Objectives: Disposal of plastic was a major problem in the present era, as the usage of plastics was growing day by day and it takes hundreds of year for plastic material to degrade. The effective ways to recycle and reuse of plastics are being formulated. Methods: Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) Bags was taken into consideration as it was easily available and had low density than other type. The used plastic bags were collected, ground in to smaller components. Melted and pulverized in order to get granules of plastic of about 1 mm size. The density of the pulverized was found to be 920 Kg/m³ and its specific gravity was 0.89. Seive analysis were carried out and about 95% of the plastic bags were found to be in the range of 1-1.15 mm. 45 Nos of 100 × 100 × 100 mm cement concrete cubes of M20 mix were cast for 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% fine aggregate being replaced with pulverized plastic material. Volumetric proportioning was adopted instead of design mix since the low density of plastic bags material was too low. Workability test, mechanical properties were determined. Findings: The test results revealed that the compression strength of concrete at 28th days of conventional concrete is 23.56 N/mm². By partial replacement of 5% of Burned LDPE bags in concrete the 28th days increased by about 0.36 N/mm² when compared to conventional concrete. By partial replacement of 10% of burned LDPE bags in concrete the 28th days increased by about 1.02 N/mm² when compared to conventional concrete. By partial replacement of 15% of burned LDPE bags in concrete at 28th day increased by about 2.27 N/mm² for when compared to conventional concrete. By partial replacement of 20% of Burned LDPE bags in concrete the 28th days increased by about 1.16 N/mm² when compared to conventional concrete. Thus it is inferred that partial replacement of Burned LDPE bags up to 15% can be adopted. Novelty/Improvement: It is thereby suggested that utilization of this Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) bags in concrete will reduce the requirement for convectional fine aggregate thereby resulting in conservation of natural resources.
