Art as Social Practice Technologies for Change, 2022
The Camp Washington Capsule project was made by Gemma-Rose Turnbull with Eliza Gregory at Wave Pool, a contemporary art fulfillment center in Camp Washington, Ohio, for the 2018 FotoFocus Biennial. In response to the biennial theme of “The Archive,” this project was designed as a loose capsule of material about a neighborhood in flux, encapsulating ongoing dialogues about gentrification, growth, and change. Twenty-five community members were interviewed, focusing on people intentionally growing the community (through art, food, and other making), as well as long-term residents extending their knowledge to newcomers. Turnbull made portraits, photographed the place, and collected materials, including Facebook posts, historical newspaper clippings and images, articles, books, and found and made objects. A 480-page digital “print-on-demand” catalogue was prepared to be used as needed by the current and future community of Camp Washington. This reflective essay by Turnbull examines the intention behind the creation of the accessible digital archive and includes an update from Wave Pool director Calcagno Cullen on how the archive has been utilized since its creation. - Surface tension: Navigating socially engaged documentary photographic practices
