  • THE IMAGE OF THE "TATARS" IN THE WRITTEN SOURCES OF OLD RUSSIA AND THE STATES OF THE "CHRISTIAN WORLD"

    Research objectives: To identify the main features of the image of the “Tatars” reflected in the narrative sources of Old Russia and other Christian states. Research materials: A body of Russian chronicle sources, historical and literary works of Old Russia (“The Teaching of St. Serapion”, “Zadonshchina”), “The Story of Mikhail and Andronik Palaiologos” by George Pachymeres, the Georgian chronograph “Zhamta agmtsereli”, “The History of the Nation of Archers” by the monk, Magakia, “The History of Armenia” by Kirakos Gandzaketsi, “Epistle to the Sorrowful Lament about the Destruction of the Hungarian Kingdom by the Tatars” by Master Roger, and “The Great Chronicle” (Chronica Maiora) by Matthew Paris. Results and novelty of the research: Based on the comparative use of Russian, Caucasian, and European sources, the authors come to the conclusion that the image of the “Tatars” presented in Russian written sources combines both the characteristics of the Eastern conquerors common to the Christian cultural and historical narrative, and a number of differences. The general features include the correlation of the “Tatars”, at the initial stages of their military expansion, with the peoples of the “End Times” or the idea of them as a “scourge of God” sent as punishment for the sins of Christians. A specific feature of the image of the “Tatars” contained in Russian chronicles is the almost complete lack of information about their appearance, everyday culture, and military skills.
  • "POISONED" KHANS: THE PHENOMENON OF THE SUDDEN DEATH OF RULERS IN THE MENTAL PERCEPTION OF MEDIEVAL MONGOLS

    Research objectives: To find out the real causes of death of the Mongolian khans Yesugei-baatur, Ogedei, and Guyuk, as well as the circumstances of the emergence of ideas about their poisoning, reflected in a number of narrative sources. Research materials: The work used the Mongolian historical and literary works “Mongol un-niucha tobchiyan” (“The Secret History of the Mongols”) and “Altan Tobchi” (“Golden Legend”), the Mongolian-Chinese dynastic chronicle “Yuan Shi”, as well as the works of the Hulaguid “chroniclers” Rashid al-Din (“Jami at-tawarih”) and Juveini ata-Malik (“Tarikh-i-jehangusha”). In addition, the information contained in the travel notes of the head of the papal embassy to the court of Guyuk Khagan – Giovanni del Plano Carpini – and the ambassador of the French King Louis IX, Guillaume Rubruk, were involved. Results and novelty of the study: the topic of reflection and interpretation in medieval written sources of the sudden deaths of Mongolian rulers has been beyond the attention of nomadic historians up to the present time. Because of this circumstance, the relevance of the problem raised in the study lies in considering one of the least studied aspects of the mental history of Eurasian nomads. The article examines several episodes related to the sudden death of three Mongolian khans (Yesugei-baatur, Ogedei, Guyuk) and the interpretation of these tragic events in narrative sources. Based on a critical analysis of the information presented in written sources, as well as the use of data from natural science disciplines (medicine, geography), the authors conclude that the misconceptions common in historical science about the violent nature of the deaths of the above-mentioned Mongolian rulers are false. According to the authors of the study, the causes of the sudden and premature deaths of Yesugei-baatur, Ogedei, and Guyuk were, respectively, food toxicological poisoning, the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption, and the progressive development of a chronic, incurable disease. It should be noted that the presented work is in the nature of an interdisciplinary study and is a thematic continuation of the article published in the journal “Golden Horde Review” in 2023 [8].
  • VII INTERNATIONAL GOLDEN HORDE FORUM “THE CIVILIZATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ISLAM ADOPTION BY THE VOLGA BULGARIA AND THE GOLDEN HORDE: INTEGRATION PROCESSES IN THE MEDIEVAL HISTORY OF RUSSIA”

    On December 14–16, 2022, Kazan traditionally became the venue for the VII International Golden Horde Forum, “The Civilizational Significance of the Adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgaria and the Golden Horde: Integration Processes in the Medieval History of Russia.” It was organized as part of the Republic’s plan of main events dedicated to the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgaria. The organizers of the forum were the M.A. Usmanov Center for Research of the Golden Horde and the Tatar Khanates of Sh. Marjani Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tatarstan, and the International Public Organization, “Association of Researchers of the Golden Horde.” The forum was the most important conference on the study of the history of the Golden Horde and its successors, and it brought together many leading domestic and foreign researchers. About 70 scientists from Russia, Turkey, Israel, Serbia, Belarus, the Czech Republic, and Kazakhstan took part in the forum. This time, the attention of historians was drawn to the following sets of questions: sources and source study of the Golden Horde and the Tatar khanates, problems and prospects; the adoption and spread of Islam in Volga Bulgaria and the Golden Horde; Islam and the civilization of the Golden Horde; Muslims in Rus’ during the period of the Golden Horde, presence, perception, relations, and influence; post-Horde khanates as Islamic Wilayats, ethnocultural and social dimensions; Tatar khanates as Islamic yurts, ethnocultural and social dimensions; military culture of the Ulus of Jochi, weapons, wars, and battles. Within the framework of the VII International Golden Horde Forum, round tables were organized. Following the results of the conference, a general resolution of the forum was formed and approved.
  • THE “NECESSARY DEATH” OF THE GRAND DUKE: ON THE QUESTION OF THE CAUSES AND CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE DEATH OF YAROSLAV VSEVOLODOVICH IN THE AUTUMN OF 1246

    Research objectives: The objective of this study is to determine the causes and circumstances surrounding the death of Grand Duke Yaroslav Vsevolodovich. His demise occurred during his presence at the headquarters of Turakina and in the presence of the Great Khan Guyuk. Research materials: The research draws from a complex of Russian chronicle sources, monuments of ”hagiographic” literature from Ancient Rus’, Plano Carpini’s “The History of the Mongols,” Rashid al-Din’s “The Collection of Chronicles,” Juvayni Ata-Malik’s “The History of the Conqueror of the World,” and acts of diplomatic correspondence. Results and novelty of the study: Through a critical and comparative analysis of written sources, examined in the context of the political landscape within the Mongolian Empire leading up to and during the Kurultai of 1246, the authors of this article conclude that Plano Carpini’s account of the poisoning of Russian Prince Yaroslav Vsevolodovich by Turakina khatun is unreliable. Utilizing a methodology akin to the natural sciences, the study ultimately attributes Yaroslav Vsevolodovich’s death to natural causes, specifically complications arising from an acute toxicoinfective disease. This conclusion is drawn considering the absence of qualified medical care, weakened immunity, and the advanced age of the ruler of Northeastern Russia.

  • The interpretation of the "great stand on the Ugra River" in 1480

    : Objective : Based on a systematic method of historical information and a partial historical reconstruction using narrative sources, the objective here is to cast doubt on the interpretation of the Great Stand on the Ugra River in 1480 as the liberation of Rus’ian lands from dependence on the Horde. Research materials: A number of synchronous annalistic sources and acts containing information about the event. This material obviously contradicts the Soviet interpretation of the issue, which has remained popular in modern historiography. In addition, modern domestic and foreign studies also contain voluminous materials that do not allow us to consider this event as a release from Horde. Results and novelty of the research: The published sources do not allow us to consider the Great Stand on the Ugra River in 1480 as an event that put an end to the dependence of the Rus’ian lands on the Horde. Several obvious circumstances provide evidence for the judgment advanced here. Firstly, the chronicles attribute the resolution of this conflict to divine power and describe this event in a way that does not allow us to consider it as a victory for either the Rus’ian or the Horde’s military forces. Secondly, the continued payment of tribute to the Tatar khanates indicates both the long-term dependence of the Rus’ian lands and the preservation of the internal unity of the post-Horde political space which continued to pose a threat to the Moscow state. The research results are shared by modern experts on the history of the Golden Horde and the Tatar Khanates.
