Herein, we report the first example of MOF synthesis employing aluminum slags as a waste resource. This synthesis was exclusively carried out from waste materials, under ambient conditions in water, thus aligning with the guiding principles of Green Chemistry. The resulting MIL-53(Al) material was further functionalized with SnO 2 nanoparticles and tested as catalyst for the dehydration of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), showing a tenfold increase in catalytic efficiency compared to unsupported SnO 2 . 鈥 Novel green synthesis of MIL-53(Al) from aluminum slag and PET waste at room temperature. 鈥 MIL-53(Al) functionalized with SnO 2 for glucose-to-5-HMF conversion. 鈥 Advancing circular economy and zero-waste concepts in sustainable MOFs synthesis.

We present a green procedure for the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (having Zn, Ni, or Co) in graphene oxide aqueous suspensions (obtained with graphitized or nongraphitized carbon nanofibers) avoiding organic solvents and high temperatures. The materials were thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), N2/CO2-physisorption, Raman and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopies. The results demonstrate that the nature of the metal (electronegativity) and graphene oxide (defects of oxygen-containing groups) are key in the size, porosity, and defectivity (free noncoordinated linkers and open metal sites) of the MOF and significantly affect their CO2 adsorption energy (up to 6 kJ路mol-1 increase), uptake (up to 5路mmolCO2路g-1 increase), and catalytic activity (up to 35% rate increase) with respect to bulk MOFs in the solvent-free, ambient pressure CO2 cycloaddition to epoxides.

An advanced oxidation heterogeneous process completely degrades 4-nitrophenol in weak acid ambient aqueous conditions using post-synthetically iron-doped nickel azolate frameworks. The framework crystallinity, porosity and reactivity of the redox-active iron (II/III) sites, hydroxyl anions and radicals upon H2O2 pretreatment are discussed based on spectroscopic analysis of the reaction mixture and pretreated MOF.

鈥 Phen-doped ceria nanocubes prepared by a hydrothermal method under mild conditions. 鈥 Phen incorporation does not alter both crystalline structure and morphology. 鈥 Phen molecule coordinated to cerium atoms of the ceria lattice. 鈥 Band gap decrease observed with increasing phen content. 鈥 Enhanced optical properties related to intermediate N 2 p states due to phen. A novel facile method to prepare ceria nanocrystals with well-defined cubic morphology and enhanced optical properties is herein disclosed. Both the decrease in the band gap and the appearance of absorption edges above 400 nm, which redound in a significant absorption of visible light, are accomplished by simply incorporating in situ different amounts of a typical chelating bidentate ligand, 1,10-phenanthroline, during the synthesis of these ceria nanocubes. Such a remarkable effect has been tentatively connected with the ability of this nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound to coordinate Ce 3+ cations from the ceria precursor salt, thus yielding intermediate N 2 p states along the band gap of the oxide.

The introduction of iron ionic sites by metal exchange of defective homometallic nickel pyrazolate frameworks generates non鈥恜recious, Earth鈥恆bundant, first鈥恟ow heterometallic Fe/Ni鈥恜yrazolate frameworks. The Fe incorporation at the Ni nodes of the framework allows to control the hydrogen peroxide activation, minimizing its decomposition and O2 liberation, occurring at the homometallic Ni nodes. The generation of Fe鈭扥H reactive oxygen species at the heterometallic Fe/Ni nodes is demonstrated by the higher activity in the proof鈥恛f鈥恈oncept oxidation of 1鈥恜henylethanol to acetophenone in an aqueous medium.

ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, 2021
We report the controlled synthesis of thin films of prototypical zirconium metal鈥搊rganic frameworks [Zr6O4(OH)4(benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate-2-X)6] (X = H, UiO-66 and X = NH2, UiO-66-NH2) over the external surface of shaped carbonized substrates (spheres and textile fabrics) using a layer-by-layer method. The resulting composite materials contain metal鈥搊rganic framework (MOF) crystals homogeneously distributed over the external surface of the porous shaped bodies, which are able to capture an organophosphate nerve agent simulant (diisopropylfluorophosphate, DIFP) in competition with moisture (very fast) and hydrolyze the P鈥揊 bond (slow). This behavior confers the composite material self-cleaning properties, which are useful for blocking secondary emission problems of classical protective equipment based on activated carbon.
  • Selective Implantation of Diamines for Cooperative Catalysis in Isoreticular Heterometallic Titanium鈥揙rganic Frameworks

    Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 2021
We introduce the first example of isoreticular titanium-organic frameworks, MUV-10 and MUV-12, to show how the different affinity of hard Ti(IV) and soft Ca(II) metal sites can be used to direct selective grafting of amines to the last. This enables the combination of Lewis acid titanium centers and available -NH2 sites in two sizeable pores for cooperative cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The s elective grafting of molecules to heterometallic clusters adds up to the pool of methodologies available for controlling the positioning and distribution of chemical functions in precise positions of the framework required for definitive control of pore chemistry.
  • Diffusion Control in Single-Site Zinc Reticular Amination Catalysts
    Francisco G. Cirujano, Elena L贸pez-Maya, Neyvis Almora-Barrios, Ana Rubio-Gaspar, Nuria Mart铆n, Jorge A. R. Navarro, Carlos Mart铆-Gastaldo
    Inorganic Chemistry, 2020
Zn-containing metal-organic frameworks have been used for the first time as heterogeneous catalysts in the amination of C-Cl bonds. The use of extended bis(pyrazolate) linkers can generate highly porous architectures, which favor the diffusion of amines to the confined spaces with respect to other imidazolate frameworks with narrower pore windows. The N4Zn nodes of the Zn-reticular framework show comparable activity to state-of-the-art homogeneous Zn amination catalysts, avoiding the use of basic conditions, precious metals, or other additives. This is combined with long-term activity and stability upon several reaction cycles, without contamination of the reaction product.

UiO-66, MOF-808 and NU-1000 metal-organic frameworks exhibit a differentiated reactivity to-wards [Mg(OMe)2(MeOH)2]4 related to the accessi-bility of the pore structure. Microporous UiO-66 remains unchanged while mesoporous MOF-808 and hierarchical micro/mesoporous NU-1000 mate-rials give rise to the formation of doped systems containing exposed MgZr5O2(OH)6 heterometallic clusters in the mesoporous cavities. This modifica-tion is responsible for a remarkable enhancement of the catalytic activity towards the hydrolytic degra-dation of P-F and P-S bonds of toxic nerve agents, at room temperature, in unbuffered aqueous solutions.
