Diversity of insect pollinators on major seed spices in the sub humid southern plains and Aravalli hills of Rajasthan, India Shivangi Joshi, Jhumar Lal, Ashok Kumar Meena, R. Swaminathan Journal of Entomological Research, 2024 AbstractStudies were carried out to analyse the flowering phenology and diversity of local insect pollinators. The maximum flowering phenology was observed in coriander after 60-86 days of sowing, 67-92 days after sowing in cumin and 103-114 days after sowing in fennel. Effective bloom period varied from 17-24 days in coriander; 16-21 days in cumin and 15-21 days in fennel. The Insect pollinators comprised members from Hymenoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, and Lepidoptera with Apoidea being the dominant group. Peak activities of pollinators occurred between 12 to 14 hours daily. A significantly positive correlation was recorded between mean atmospheric temperature and pollinator abundance in cumin and fennel. There was no significant variation in the species richness or numerical abundance of the insect pollinators' diversity between the treated and untreated sets in the both years that were recorded in bee bowls and yellow pan traps.
Field efficacy of bio-rational insecticides against major pestiferous insects of cabbage Jhumar Lal, R. Swaminathan, A. K Meena, R. Nagar International Journal of Pest Management, 2024 The major pestiferous insects during both crop seasons included aphids and diamond back moth; while, flea beetles and painted bug attained pest status during 2015-16; besides, tobacco caterpillar was noticed during 2016-17. Maximum reduction in aphid population (45.81 and 54.07%, respectively, at 1 and 3 DAS) was recorded for A. indica oil followed by Spinosad 45%SC; same schedule had maximum reduction of flea beetle population 1-DAS (50.03%); while, 3 and 7 days after spray Spinosad 45%SC followed by Spinosad 45%SC gave significantly higher reduction (75.21 and 64.62%, respectively). Maximum reduction of painted bug population (68.37% at 3DAS) was due to A. incida oil followed by Sl-NPV. Treatment schedule of Spinosad 45%SC followed by Spinosad 45%SC was most effective against DBM during both crop seasons with significantly lowest pooled larval population per plant being 0.82 and 1.0, 3 and 7 days after first spray; likewise, 1.62, 0.92, and 0.90, 1, 3 and 7 days after second spray. Similarly, against tobacco caterpillar, treatment schedule Spinosad 45%SC followed by Spinosad 45%SC was most effective at 3 DAS (0.71 larvae/plant); while, schedules A. indica oil followed by Spinosad 45%SC and A. indica oil followed by Sl-NPV were equally effective 7 DAS during crop season 2016-17 (0.90 larvae/plant).
Bio-efficacy of IPM modules against mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach) in Indian mustard Kishan Lal Naga, Bhairu Singh Rana, Bhanwar Lal Naga, Jhumar Lal Journal of Entomological Research, 2022 AbstractTen different IPM modules were evaluated against mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.). The treatment schedule comprising two sprays of imidacloprid 17.8 SL (0.005%) caused maximum reduction of aphid population with the cumulative mean of 77.29 and 79.11% after 3 days of spray, during 1st and 2nd years, respectively. It was followed by the treatment thiamethoxam 25 WG @ 0.005%. The maximum seed yield (3,899.33 and 3,949.33 g/plot) was obtained in the treatment schedule consisting of two sprays of imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.005%. The maximum net return was also recorded in the same treatment (? 15,676) with highest benefit: cost ratio of 1.32.
Abiotic factors influencing the occurrence of natural enemies associated with major insect pests of cauliflower V.S.L. Saranya, B.S. Rana, Jhumar Lal Journal of Entomological Research, 2022 AbstractThe incidence of all the natural enemies commenced during December and January months. Aphidiphagous parasitoids and syrphids reached their peak population of 54.10 and 73.83 mummified aphids/plant; and 2.23 and 2.30 maggots/plant, respectively in February during both the years of study, while the maximum population of predatory coccinellids and spiders appeared in March, reaching a peak population of 2.53 and 2.63 beetles/plant; and 0.30 and 0.23 spiders/plant during the two consecutive seasons of the experiment, respectively. Their occurrence was in positive correlation with atmospheric temperature, wind velocity and sunshine hours; and in negative correlation with relative humidity and rainfall, during both the years. Also, the relationship of aphid with its natural enemies viz., Diaeretiella rapae (parasitoid), predatory coccinellids and syrphids was noticed to be significantly positive with correlation coefficient (r) values ranging from 0.80 to 0.97 during both the years of study.
Biology of pulse beetle [Callosobruchus chinensis (L.)] and its reaction against greengram [Vigna radiata (L) R. Wilczek] varieties Gurmel Singh, B.S. Rana, Jhumar Lal, K.C. Sharma Journal of Entomological Research, 2021 AbstractA laboratory study was conducted to evaluate resistance/preference in six green gram varieties viz., RMG62, RMG-268, RMG-344, RMG-492, SML-668 and IPM-02-3 against the C. chinensis (L.). Different biological parameters of life cycle like, egg laying, percent adult emergence alongwith growth index and economically important parameters like, percent grain damage, weight loss and germination were also observed. The biology of C. chinensis was studied on SML-668 variety of green gram. Female beetles laid on an average 90.0 eggs with mean incubation period of 4.8 days, larval pupal period took on average of 29.4 days. Males lived for 6.2 days while females for 8.6 days. The mean developmental period was 33.7 days and the growth index recorded was 2.79 on SML-668 variety of green gram. The varieties, SML-668 was most preferred host for egg laying and maximum percent adult emergence while least preferred variety was recorded RMG-62 with minimum percent adult emergence. Variety RMG-62 was the also least preferred food for the C. chinensis with the lowest growth index of 1.57. The maximum seed damage up to (80.21%) and weight loss (17.47%) was observed in SML-668, while minimum seed damage (40.99%) and weight loss (10.49%) occurred in RMG-62. Germination per cent was recorded highest in RMG-62 and RMG-344 with 85.37% in both and was lowest in SML-668 with 65.44%. Variety, RMG-62 was found relatively less damaged or less preferred and can be used in integrated pest management programmes against C. chinensis during storage.
Relative efficacy of bio-pesticides against fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hub.) on tomato Vijay Kumar, M.K. Mahla, Jhumar Lal, I.M. Pinjara, Baddhri Prasad Journal of Entomological Research, 2018 The result showed that the three applications of spinosad 45 SC (200 ml/ha) were found most effective in reducing the population of tomato fruit borer larvae and fruit damage i.e. 76.96 and 5.45 per cent respectively followed by Ha-NPV at (250 LE/ha) and Bt (1.5 kg/ha) with 69.17 and 57.76 and 7.16 and 9.70 per cent in reduction larval population and fruit damage respectively. Neem oil (3%) was found least effective among all the treatments and caused lowest reduction in population of larvae (53.89 percent) and fruit damage (13.80 percent). The highest marketable yield of 108.55 kg/plot was recorded in spinosad 45 SC (200 ml/ha) with highest C: B ratio of 1: 2.056. It was followed by Ha-NPV (250 LE/ha) and Bt (1.5 kg/ha) treatment, which yielded 97.80 kg/plot and 94.06 kg/plot, respectively. Neem oil @ 3% yielded the lowest marketable yield (72.23 kg/plot).

Reaction of some sorghum varieties against lesser grain borer, Rhizopertha dominica Fab. (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) Abhimnyu Singh, K.C. Sharma, Jhumar Lal Journal of Entomological Research, 2017 Among five sorghum varieties (CSV-15, CSV-23, CSV-17, PC-1080 and PJ-1430) screened against R. dominica. CSV-23 and CSV-15 recorded minimum grain damage of 7.44 and 12.25 per cent, weight loss of 1.54 and 2.15 per cent and progeny development as 23.88 and 30.06 adults, respectively, upto 120 days of storage. Variety Pc-1080 was found susceptible as it recorded high grain damage, high weight loss, and higher progeny development with mean of 18.63%, 10.50%, and 44.31 adults respectively.
