Evaluation method for identification of tail blocking in horses M. E. Neto, G.M. Pivato, G.C. Silva, G.M. Raphaelli, L. Gheno, A.J. Torres, R.A. Oliveira, R.A. Fioretti, B.R. Curcio, C.E.W. Nogueira Arquivo Brasileiro De Medicina Veterinaria E Zootecnia, 2024 This study aims to standardize the clinical and complementary examination using surface electromyography (EMG) to assess the neuromuscular function of the equine tail. Firstly, clinical examinations of the tails and EMG measurements were performed on ten healthy animals without any tail interference or manipulation. This initial experiment aimed to establish a baseline for clinical examination and EMG results. The animals underwent tail nerve plexus blockade in the second experiment using an anesthetic agent. The objective compares the clinical examination and EMG findings between the anesthetized and non-manipulated tails. Finally, two animals were used in the third experiment, where peripheral infiltration of the tail nerve plexuses was performed using a neurolytic agent. The study successfully obtained a pattern for the clinical examination of a healthy equine tail and established a pattern for the clinical examination of a tail after infiltration with anesthetic and neurolytic agents. Significant differences were observed in the clinical examination before and after the application of local anesthesia, as well as in the EMG values before and after local infiltration with anesthetic (P=0.04) and neurolytic agent (P=0.03). The presented study introduces a clinical examination protocol that utilizes surface electromyography as a diagnostic tool for cauda equina block.
Metabolic profile and body condition score of Crioulo horses finalists in the Freio de Ouro competition Mariana Andrade Mousquer, Bruna da Rosa Curcio, Camila Gervini Wendt, Bruna dos Santos Suñé Moraes, Rafaela Pinto de Souza, Isadora Paz de Oliveira dos Santos, Gabriela Marocco Raphaelli, Carlos Eduardo Wayne Nogueira Semina Ciencias Agrarias, 2023 The aim of this study was to assess the body condition score (BCS) and metabolic profile of finalists in the Freio de Ouro competition, stratified by sex. This study examined 84 Crioulo horses, comprising 43 non-pregnant mares and 41 stallions. Morphometric measurements, including BCS, cresty neck score (CNS), neck and heart girth, and assessments of fat depth at the neck and at the tail base, were conducted. Additional derived measurements such as the percentage of body fat (%BF), body mass index (BMI), fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), heart girth:height ratio (HG:HW), and neck circumference:height ratio (NC:HW) were calculated. A subgroup of 53 animals was selected for the evaluation of metabolic parameters, including triglycerides, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), and adiponectin. In terms of BCS, 21% of participants were classified as overweight, with 49% having CNS≥3. Females exhibited greater fat deposition at the tail base and neck, along with higher %BF, FM, and HG:HW ratio, and lower NC:HWcompared to males. Among metabolic variables, females showed higher concentrations of LDH, LDL, CK, and lower concentrations of adiponectin than males. No differences were observed in morphometric measurements between participants that qualified for the final day of the competition and those which were disqualified. The study revealed that despite the rigorous physical demands and preparation required for the Freio de Ouro competition, a percentage of participants were overweight, displaying increased regional fat deposition in the neck. Although no metabolic changes related to increased adiposity were identified, the findings indicate a predisposition to the development of metabolic alterations. Additionally, females exhibited a greater accumulation of fat than males.
FREEZING OF EQUINE SEMEN IS INFLUENCED BY EXPOSURE TIME AND CONCENTRATION OF THE CRYOPROTECTANT GLYCEROL Pablo Luis Fracaro, Carine Dahl Corcini, Norton Luis Souza Gatti, Jorge Squeff Filho, Izani Bonel Acosta, Jorge Squeff Filho, Felipe Pires Hartwig, Bruna Da Rosa Curcio, Antonio Sergio Varela Junior Cryo Letters, 2023 BACKGROUND: Glycerol is a cryoprotectant widely used in the freezing of mammalian species ' semen, but no study has demonstrated its optimum concentration and the appropriate exposure time for equine species. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that the exposure time (15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 min) versus concentration (2, 3, 4 and 5%) of the cryoprotectant glycerol influences the freezing success of equine semen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ejaculate of 12 stallions were frozen in different glycerol concentrations following different exposure times. The thawed sperm was evaluated for kinetic parameters using a Computer Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA) system and cell feature parameters were assessed by flow cytometry. RESULTS: Considering the total and progressive motility of the spermatozoa, we concluded that protocols using 5% glycerol for 15 and 30 min exposure, 4% glycerol for 45 min exposure and 3% glycerol for 90 min exposure generated the best results. CONCLUSION: We suggest the use of any of these protocols for a better cryopreservation of equine semen.
Red blood cell distribution width to platelet ratio in neonatal foals with sepsis Rebeca Scalco, Gabriela Novo de Oliveira, Bruna da Rosa Curcio, McCaide Wooten, K. Gary Magdesian, Stephanie Takako Hidai, Pranav Pandit, Monica Aleman Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 2023 BackgroundRapid and accurate markers to aid diagnosis of sepsis are needed in neonatal foals. The CBC variable red blood cell distribution width (RDW) to platelet ratio (RPR) is associated with inflammatory response and linked to poor outcomes of sepsis in human patients.HypothesisExplore the correlation of RPR with sepsis in neonatal foals and evaluate RPR predictive and prognostic value.AnimalsThree hundred seventeen hospitalized neonatal foals ≤7 days of age that had a CBC and physical exam performed at admission between 2012 and 2021.MethodsRetrospective case‐control study. Clinical records were used to calculate sepsis scores and define groups. Red blood cell distribution width to platelet ratio was calculated and compared between groups (septic vs nonseptic) based on Kruskal‐Wallis and Wilcoxon signed‐rank tests. A multivariate logistic regression model to predict sepsis was created. The cutoff for RPR was obtained based on the maximal Youden Index. The Kaplan‐Meier method and the log‐rank test were used to estimate survival curves and compare survival rates based on RPR.ResultsRed blood cell distribution width to platelet ratio was significantly higher in septic foals (Median = 0.099, confidence interval [CI] [0.093; 0.108]) than in sick nonseptic (0.085, CI [0.083; 0.089]) and healthy foals (0.081, CI [0.077; 0.086]; P < .0001). Red blood cell distribution width to platelet ratio was able to predict sepsis with high accuracy (AUC = 82.1%). The optimal RPR cutoff for sepsis was 0.09.Conclusions and Clinical ImportanceRed blood cell distribution width to platelet ratio calculation is practical, inexpensive, and based on CBC‐derived data. Calculation of RPR along with CBC can aid in the diagnosis of sepsis and estimation of outcome.
Red cell distribution width values and red cell distribution width-to-platelet ratio in Thoroughbred foals in the first 24 hours of life Rebeca Scalco, Monica Aleman, Carlos E. W. Nogueira, Natalia B. Freitas, Bruna R. Curcio Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, 2023 ObjectivesTo report red cell distribution width (RDW) values, to calculate RDW‐to‐platelet ratio (RPR), and to investigate a possible correlation of RDW and RPR index values in neonatal foals classified as healthy or at risk based on clinical information from a population of foals up to 24 hours of life.DesignRetrospective study conducted from records and CBCs of foals born between June and November from 2018 to 2020 foaling seasons.SettingBreeding farm.AnimalsThree hundred and nine neonatal full‐term Thoroughbred foals.InterventionsNone.Measurements and Main ResultsFoals were evaluated by a veterinarian within 15 minutes after birth, and a blood sample was collected within 24 hours of life. Based on clinical information, 88 of 309 foals (28.4%) were considered at risk of perinatal disease, and 201 were healthy. Mean gestational age for the foals was 346.3 ± 9.7 days. RDW values did not differ between groups. Gestational length demonstrated to have a negative correlation with RDW (r = –0.156, P = 0.005) and mean corpuscular volume (r = –0.135, P = 0.01), indicating a link of these variables to foal maturity. RPR index was higher for at‐risk (0.073 ± 0.018) than for healthy foals (0.068 ± 0.014, P = 0.01).ConclusionRPR might be a promising early indicator of disease for the field triage of neonatal foals.
Humoral immunity is not altered in overweight pregnant Crioulo mares Mariana Andrade Mousquer, Bruna dos Santos Suñe Moraes, Alice Corrêa Santos, Rafaela Pinto de Souza, Marcelo de Lima, Paulo Ricardo Centeno Rodrigues, Bruna da Rosa Curcio, Carlos Eduardo Wayne Nogueira Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Research and Animal Science, 2023 Both pregnancy and obesity can influence significant changes in the immune system. On this basis, the present study proposes to evaluate the humoral immune response of overweight pregnant mares in response to a commercial vaccine. Thirty pregnant Crioulo mares were separated according to body condition score (BCS) into overweight (BCS≥7/9) or lean-control (BCS= 5-6/9). In each group, the animals were subdivided into vaccinated and controls. The mares were vaccinated against EHV-1 in two doses spaced 21 days apart and had their blood collected monthly, for five months, for antibody evaluation. Both vaccinated groups had an increase in specific neutralizing antibodies after the vaccine. However, after the second dose, there was no increase in antibodies in any of the groups. Vaccinated overweight and lean-control mares did not differ at any time point. Therefore, this study demonstrated that obesity does not influence the humoral immune response in pregnant Crioulo mares.
