Reducing Nitrogen Fertilizer Dependency in Tropical Pastures Through Azospirillum Brasilense and Pseudomonas Fluorescens Coinoculation Lucas Henrique Ferreira Santos, Gabriel Pereira Lima, Clarice Backes, Alessandro José Marques Santos, Patrick Bezerra Fernandes, et al. New Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, 2026 Coinoculation with Azospirillum brasilense and Pseudomonas fluorescens was associated with maintained forage productivity under reduced nitrogen (N) fertilizer rates in tropical pastures. This hypothesis was evaluated in a 2‐year field experiment conducted over two consecutive growing seasons (2022 and 2023) the State University of Goiás, São Luís de Montes Belos, Goiás, Brazil, using Mavuno grass ( Urochloa hybrid cv. Mavuno). Eight treatments were evaluated, combining microbial inoculation and N fertilizer (urea) application: A. brasilense (AZO); A. brasilense and 50 kg ha −1 N (AZO + N50); P. fluorescens (PSD); P. fluorescens and 50 kg ha −1 N (PSD + N50); A. brasilense and P. fluorescens (AZO + PSD); A. brasilense and P. fluorescens and 50 kg ha −1 N (AZO + PSD + N50); synthetic N application at 100 kg ha −1 (N100); and a control with no inoculation or N application. The PSD + N50 and AZO + PSD + N50 treatments resulted in the highest forage yields (8.51 and 9.35 Mg ha −1 , respectively; p < 0.001), and these responses were consistent across both growing seasons. Notably, the 50% reduction in N fertilization maintained forage yields comparable to those obtained with full N fertilization (N100). These findings suggest that coinoculation with A. brasilense and P. fluorescens allows forage productivity to be maintained under reduced N fertilizer rates in tropical pastures, indicating potential to decrease reliance on synthetic fertilizers. The observed responses reflect the combined effect of microbial inoculation and moderate N supply, highlighting improved N use efficiency under coinoculation.
The combination of sulfur and nitrogen fertilization has a direct impact on the recovery process of degraded pastures in tropical climates Dirk Daniel Dijkstra, Clarice Backes, Alessandro José Marques Santos, Arthur Gabriel Teodoro, Patrick Bezerra Fernandes, et al. Grassland Science, 2025 The present study aimed to determine the effect of combining sulfur (S) with nitrogen (N) in pastures of Marandu palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha [A. Rich.] R.D. Webster) at an early stage of degradation. The experiment was conducted in São Luís de Montes Belos (located in the Brazilian Cerrado region), starting in October 2019 and ending in September 2021. The design used was a randomized block design arranged in a factorial scheme, where the plots were made up of S doses and the subplots of N doses, with four replications. Five S doses (0, 65, 130, 195 and 260 kg/ha) and three N doses (0, 100 and 200 kg/ha) were assessed. Doses of S and N promote increases in the green ground cover rate and the green color index. The combined application of 200 kg/ha of N and 150 kg/ha of S results in an average forage productivity of 15.59 Mg/ha, representing a 21.93% increase in biomass production in previously degraded Marandu palisade grass pastures. This demonstrates that the interaction between S and N positively influences the recovery of degraded pastures in tropical climate regions, as evidenced by the improvement in ground cover rate and forage production.
Land Use and Water-Quality Joint Dynamics of the Córrego da Formiga, Brazilian Cerrado Headwaters Pedro Rogerio Giongo, Ana Paula Aparecida de Oliveira Assis, Marcos Vinícius da Silva, Abelardo Antônio de Assunção Montenegro, José Henrique da Silva Taveira, et al. Geographies, 2022 The Brazilian Cerrado biome provides relevant ecosystem services for Brazil and South America, being strategic for the planning and management of water resources as well as for agribusiness. The objective was to evaluate the water quality along the course of the Córrego da Formiga in a virgin portion of the Brazilian Cerrado, the relationship of land use with physical-chemical and biological parameters of the water, and the inflow of the tributary. Five water collection points were defined (between the source and mouth) and observed on a quarterly scale in 2015, water samples were collected and analyzed for physical-chemical and biological parameters in the laboratory, and flow measurements were performed at the same point and day of water collection. To identify and quantify land use and land cover (LULC) in the watershed, an image from the Landsat8-OLI satellite was obtained, and other geomorphological data from hypsometry (Topodata-INPE) were obtained to generate the slope, basin delimitation, and contribution area for each water collection point. The LULC percentages for each area of contribution to the water collection points were correlated with the physical-chemical and biological parameters of the water and submitted to multivariate analysis (PLS-DA) for analysis and grouping among the five analyzed points. Changes in water-quality patterns were more pronounced concerning the time when the first and last sampling was performed (rainy period) and may be influenced by the increase in the volume of water in these periods. The stream flow is highly variable over time and between points, with the lowest recorded flow being 0.1 L s−1 (P1) and the highest being 947.80 L s−1 (P5). Córrego da Formiga has class III water quality (CONAMA resolution 357), which characterizes small restrictions on the use of water for multiple uses. The soil cover with native vegetation is just over 12%, while the predominance was of the classes of sugar cane (62.42%) and pasture (19.33%). The PLS-DA analysis allowed separating the water analysis points between P1, P2, P3, and P5, while P4 was superimposed on others. It was also possible to verify that the parameters that weighed the most for this separation of water quality were pH, alkalinity_T, alkalinity_h, calcium, and hardness, all with a tendency to increase concentration from the source (P1) to the mouth (P5). As for water quality, it was also possible to verify that points P2 and P5 presented better water-quality conditions.
Productivity and nutrient extraction by Paiaguás palisadegrass, single and intercropping with pigeon pea, submitted to doses of nitrogen P.R. Rezende, L.M. Rodrigues, C. Backes, A.G. Teodoro, A.J.M. Santos, et al. Arquivo Brasileiro De Medicina Veterinaria E Zootecnia, 2022 The objective of this work was to evaluate the productivity and extraction of macronutrients by Urochloa brizantha cv. BRS Paiaguás (Syn. Brachiaria brizantha cv. BRS Paiaguás) single and intercropped with pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan cv. BRS Mandarim), subjected to four doses of nitrogen applied in topdressing (0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha-1). The experiment was carried out in São Luís de Montes Belos, GO, in soil classified as dystrophic red latosol, under Cerrado conditions. Plant height and dry mass of pigeon pea, plant height, number of tillers, dry mass, and macronutrient extraction by Paiaguás palisadegrass were evaluated. Higher mass production was observed in the pasture intercropped with the legume, requiring a lower amount of N. Based on the results exposed, the cultivation of Paiaguás palisadegrass reaches higher productivity when intercropped with a legume such as pigeon pea, in addition to providing greater efficiency in the use of nutrients such as N, P and K. Nitrogen fertilization has a negative influence on the production of dry mass and height of pigeon pea plants.
Use of blood residue as alternative source of phosphorus in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cultivation L.Q. Oliveira, J.H.S. Taveira, P.B. Fernandes, C. Backes, C.M. Costa, et al. Arquivo Brasileiro De Medicina Veterinaria E Zootecnia, 2022 The aim of this work was to increase the aerial part, biometry, and yield of achenes from sunflower plants on the effect of increasing doses of blood residue, as an alternative source of phosphorus (P), in a clayey-textured red Oxisol. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, with six treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of five doses of blood residue (0, 6, 12, 24 and 48m3 ha-1) and a control treatment that received phosphate chemical fertilization, 80kg ha-1 of P2O5. The increasing doses of blood residue and chemical fertilization do not show disproportionality for P concentration in soil, leaf, plant height (PH), stem diameter (SD), chapter diameter (CD) and achene production. The analysis of the principal component (PC) revealed that the first PC presents the greatest accumulated variation (74%). Based on the first PC, the dose of 12m-3 ha-1 has greater influence for PH, SC, and CD. Due to the greater influence on the biometric characteristics of sunflower plants, the blood residue (12m-3 ha-1 = 98.4kg P ha-1), can be used as an alternative source of phosphorus for the cultivation of sunflower in clayey oxisols.
