Ocular sequelae following snakebite envenomation Susmitha Joshy, M. C. Chaitra Pan American Journal of Ophthalmology, 2024 We report the case of a 33-year-old male patient who developed ophthalmoplegic symptoms following a viper snakebite. The patient presented with complaints of ptosis, blurred vision, and diplopia following a snakebite on his left lower limb. Clinical examinations revealed signs of envenomation, including local swelling and tenderness, alongside ocular manifestations such as limited extraocular movements and alternating exotropia. Blood investigations showed elevated white blood cell count and urinary abnormalities. The objective of this case report is to present the characteristic findings and management of this rare manifestation of a viper snakebite.
Tear film abnormalities in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome G. Rashmi, M. C. Chaitra Pan American Journal of Ophthalmology, 2023 Introduction: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is a systemic age-related disorder with the production and accumulation of abnormal fibrous material in visceral organs and in the eye. The presence of pseudoexfoliation in the conjunction and lacrimal glands can affect the tear film stability. Objective: The objective of this study was to study the tear film abnormalities in patients with PEX. Materials and Methods: In this case–control study, Group 1 consisted of 40 eyes with PEX, Group 2 consisted of 40 eyes with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, and Group 3 consisted of 40 eyes without pseudoexfoliation (control group). Schirmer’s two tests and tear film break-up time (TBUT) were performed to study the tear film abnormalities in all eyes. Results: The mean Schirmer’s in Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 was 12.43 ± 5.697, 13.10 ± 5.173, and 21.98 ± 5.399, respectively. The mean TBUT in Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 was 6.0 ± 1.961, 5.13 ± 2.053, and 11.38 ± 1.644, respectively. Both Schirmer’s 2 test and TBUT values between Groups 1 and Group 3, between Group 2 and 3 showed statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). Conclusion: This study reveals that tear film abnormalities are commonly seen in PEX syndrome and PEX glaucoma due to the involvement of conjunctiva in PEX.
Prevalence, risk factors and severity of retinopathy of prematurity in preterm infants in a tertiary care hospital in rural karnataka Raheemunnisa Shaik Indian Journal of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, 2023 Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a condition which is one of the major causes of preventable childhood blindness. ROP may develop in premature new-borns due to avascular or incompletely vascularized retina at birth which are prone to damage. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), as well as its risk factors and severity, among newborns who were admitted to and screened at a tertiary care facility that serves a rural community.A cross-sectional study was conducted for a period of 1 year. All infants born prematurely who were admitted to the hospital and had a birth weight of less than or equal to 1500 g and/or less than 32 weeks of gestation were included in the study. Additionally, babies born between 1501-2500 grams and/or 33-35 weeks who were at a higher risk were also included. Under aseptic conditions all preterms were screened with RetCam in NICU of a tertiary hospital situated in rural area in Karnataka.224 preterm babies were screened for ROP. No ROP was noted in 185 babies (82.59%), 9 babies had stage 1 (4.02%), 21 babies stage 2 (9.38%), 9 babies had stage 3 ROP (4.02). No infant developed stage 4 and stage 5 ROP. Prevalence of ROP is 17.41% in our study. Low birth weight (LBW), Very low birth weight (VLBW), Respiratory Distress Syndrome and sepsis are found to be clinically significant in this study. In this study, the prevalence of ROP is 17.41%. LBW, VLBW, Respiratory Distress Syndrome and sepsis are found to significant risk factors. Early screening and timely appropriate treatment of ROP can prevent from causing childhood blindness.
Eye in the skin-A review article Chaitra M C, Ramanjanayalu M Indian Journal of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, 2023 This article emphasizes the interlink between eye and the skin, helping to diagnose systemic diseases based on the ocular manifestations. A complete care of eyes by the ophthalmologist will require simultaneous skin care and treatment of the systemic cause.
