    Advanced Bioseparation of Industrial Wastes Sustainable Recovery of High Value Metal Ions, 2024
    In recent years, the need for electrical energy storage materials and devices is increasing due to the evolution of electric and electronic gadgets. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have gained more interest as an electrical energy storage device for use in electric vehicles and portable electrical/electronic gadgets such as laptops, mobile phones, wireless headphones, toys, and handheld power tools due to their larger energy and power density. Because of the widespread usage of lithium-ion batteries, demand for lithium material is currently 685,000 metric tons and is forecasted to rise to 60 million metric tons by 2050. Brine harvesting being the popular primary process of lithium extraction often delivers lesser-grade lithium, and due to waste production and large water usage, it imposes an enormous load on the environment. Waste lithium-ion batteries make up the common metropolitan trash nowadays and recycling of it has become an essential secondary source that is both ecologically and economically feasible. Conventional heavy metal recovery from spent lithium-ion batteries usually involves a hydrothermal process that generates lots of harmful substances which is unsafe for the ecosystem. In 1980s, the bioleaching technique was considered as a promising technology for metal recovery from secondary sources, and in 2022, 20% of copper production is only by bioleaching. Worlds market value of bioleaching lithium is estimated to 0.153 billion US dollars in 2020 and expected to increase by 18% approximately by 2030. Bioleaching is an alternate process for conventional hydrometallurgy for extracting and recovering valuable metals like lithium from their primary and secondary sources. The bioleaching process works by consuming less water and energy, simple working conditions, and low cost of operation with minimal hazardous by-products. This chapter expansively deals with bioleaching, sources of lithium, bioleaching of lithium, microorganisms used in bioleaching, and different methods and mechanisms involved in bioleaching. This chapter also deals with the parameters influencing bioleaching such as pH, medium composition, temperature, pulp density, cell nutrients, redox potential, substrate concentration, and types of microorganisms along with hybrid bioleaching. This chapter highlights the advantages and emerging opportunities of bioleaching, providing valuable insights for researchers exploring its application in lithium extraction from waste lithium-ion batteries.
