Clinical Epidemiology and Global Health, 2023
Problem consideredSocial skills training helps improve interpersonal relationship in schizophrenia patients. However, there is a lacuna of studies in India reporting the efficacy of such training. Hence, we assessed the effectiveness of social skills program (SSP) among schizophrenia patients using Vellore assessment of social performance (VASP) scale and evaluated the association of social performance pre- and post-test with demographic variables.MethodsThis study was conducted on 40 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia admitted to in-patient psychiatric ward of a tertiary care hospital in south India. They were assigned to two groups of 20 each, where one underwent SSP intervention for 7 days, and the other routine care.ResultsIn the routine care group, majority of the patients had poor skills both pre-test (70%), and post-test (40%, p = 0.083), but in the interventional group, majority of the patients exhibited poor skills (60%) pre-test and post SSP majority of them scored significantly higher (85%, p = 0.022) VASP scores. Mean scores were significantly different with age (F = 4.130, p = 0.01) in intervention and with duration of illness (F = 3.748, p = 0.045) in routine care groups.ConclusionSSP effectively improved social performance among schizophrenia in-patients, and can be implemented as part of routine care therapy for the holistic treatment of these patients.
• Quasi-experimental study to assess the effectiveness of mental health programme on promoting mental health characteristics among adolescents in Coimbatore, India
M. Baskaran, Usha Sekar, N Kokilavani
Clinical Epidemiology and Global Health, 2023
Introduction The future and progress of a country is dependent on the children today. The advent of social media has been a double-edged sword by the way it has brought us closer and also resulted in anonymous ways of mental distress to children, which is already being tested by violent school environments and pressure to succeed resulting in the prevalence of different mental illness. Parents and school authorities should ensure that their children grow and thrive in the best and safest environment possible. Aim To evaluate the effectiveness of a Mental Health Programme on promoting mental health characteristics among adolescents in a school located in Coimbatore. Method A quasi experimental one group pre-test and post-test design was adapted for the study. A sample of 195 students were selected using stratified random proportionate sampling technique and made to answer the pre-test questionnaire followed by the mental health programme intervention. They were then made to answer the post-test questionnaire and the data was analysed. The data collection was initiated on June 2015 and ended on October 2016, the entire process took approximately 48 weeks excluding holidays and examinations. Result The pre-test mean score was 8.35 ± 3.02 and the post-test mean score was 26.77 ± 2.94 with a mean gain score of 18.42. The calculated paired ‘t' produced at value 62.278 which was found to be statistically highly significant (p < 0.001). Conclusion The results of the present study concluded that the mental health promotion programme was effective in improving the mental health characteristics among adolescent children.
• Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Program on Level of Knowledge Regarding Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) among Nursing Students
Baskaran M, Jayasudha A
Turkish Psychological Counseling and Guidance Journal, 2023
Background/Aim: The increasing prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) necessitates the timely diagnosis and treatment of patients. Knowledge of OSA is limited among student doctors and nurses. Hence, we assess the level of knowledge regarding OSA among nursing students and evaluate effectiveness of a structured teaching program on the same. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental research study, that included 90 nursing students, selected by purposive sampling. They were asked to fill out questionnaire consisting of questions regarding OSA, followed by a structured training program about OSA. They were assessed for level of knowledge regarding OSA post-test. Results: Mean knowledge score pre-test was 5.39±3.37, and post intervention was 15.9±2.45 (P =0.0001). Majority of the students (82.2%, n=74) had no prior knowledge about OSA, and none had adequate knowledge pre-test. Post-test majority had adequate knowledge (71.11%, n=64). Having prior knowledge about OSA pre-test was significantly associated with increased level of pre-test knowledge (P =0.0001). Conclusion: The knowledge of OSA among nursing students was inadequate, but the structured training program substantially increased their level of knowledge.
