Vegetation Characteristics and the Estimation of Above-Ground Biomass and Carbons Stock in Petengoran Mangrove Forest, Lampung Bay, Indonesia Ladiva Nirmala Ulvan, Indah Trisnawati, Melvi Ulvan, Ardian Ulvan 2024 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry Metroagrifor 2024 Proceedings, 2024 Mangrove is an important blue carbon ecosystem that plays a significant role in mitigating climate change. They are known for their ability to absorb and store atmospheric carbon into the biomass. In this study, the above-ground biomass, carbon stock, and the relationship between vegetation characteristic (density and canopy coverage) and carbon stock are examined. Allometric equations were used to obtain carbon stock values in four zones of Petengoran Mangrove Forest. Three species were identified at the research site. The order of their contribution to the overall carbon stock was Rhizophora apiculata > Rhizophora mucronata > Sonneratia alba. The average above-ground biomass obtained was 114.616 t/ha, while the carbon stock was 53.870 t C/ha. It was also seen that different density and canopy coverage in each zone contributed to regional variations in the value of the carbon stock, demonstrating that the characteristics of vegetation affect the values of the carbon stocks.
Design of Eddy Gas Analyzer as Carbon Sensing Device to Measure CO2 Gas in Oil Palm Plantation Ardian Ulvan, Hana Yunus Putri, Mona Arif Muda Batubara, Aryanto, Heru Pranoto, Melvi 2024 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry Metroagrifor 2024 Proceedings, 2024 Climate change and global warming are pressing issues, with CO2 being a primary driver. Oil palm plantations are often associated with significant CO2 emissions due to deforestation, peatland exploitation, and mill operations. To support mitigation efforts and enhance sustainability in the oil palm industry, accurate and continuous monitoring of CO2 concentrations is crucial. This work presents the design, implementation, and testing of an IoT -based device called the Eddy Gas Analyser, which measures the concentration of CO2 gas and related weather variables. This analyser serves as a key component in the eddy covariance method, one of the most accurate and non-destructive techniques for measuring carbon emissions. The Eddy Gas Analyser utilizes industrial-grade micro controllers and CO2 sensors, along with sensors for water vapor, temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. While not a complete eddy covariance system (as it lacks a 3D wind speed sensor), this device provides essential data for CO2 flux calculations. The IoT integration allows for real-time data transmission and remote monitoring, potentially enabling more widespread and cost-effective deployment compared to traditional systems. Two Eddy Gas Analyser units were installed at heights of 1m and 7m on a 31m meteorological tower in an oil palm plantation. Commissioning tests conducted over a 7-day period demonstrated the functionality, durability, and reliability of the devices. The results showed distinct CO2 concentration patterns at different heights, highlighting the potential for this system to capture vertical CO2 gradients. This study lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive eddy covariance system and represents a step towards developing low-cost, innovative solutions for monitoring carbon emissions in agricultural settings. Future work will focus on integrating 3D anemometer measurements and extending the monitoring period to capture long-term trends and seasonal variations.
Design of A Low Cost Three Dimensional Anemometer Device for Carbon Flux Measurement Melvi, Setiawan Margo Waluyo, Irfan Mirda, Muhammad Rafif Musyaffa, Mona Arif Muda Batubara, Aryanto, Heru Pranoto, Ardian Ulvan 2024 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry Metroagrifor 2024 Proceedings, 2024 Eddy covariance method has been widely used to measure the flux of CO2 gas exchange between ecosystems and the atmosphere, typically employing gas analysers and 3D anemometers. However, the high cost of these devices often limits their widespread application. This research aims to design and build an affordable 3D anemometer using low-cost airspeed sensors. Our main objective is to develop a 3D anemometer device capable of measuring three-dimensional wind speed and direction, and to perform data acquisition for potential use in carbon flux measurements. The research method employed is experimental, involving the design, manufacture, and direct application of the device in a palm oil plantation. We present a novel design using six digital airspeed sensors arranged in a 3D Cartesian coordinate system. The device utilizes an Arduino Portenta H7 microcontroller for data acquisition and Raspberry Pi 5 for data logger and data transmission. The device's design minimizes aerodynamic interference, and the sensors were calibrated to ensure accurate readings. Our results demonstrate the successful construction of a 3D anemometer device with a power consumption of 2.2 Wh, reflecting achievements in both power efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The commissioning test was done for 7 days, in which the device was tested on measuring the speed and direction of carbon flux continuously for 40 minutes in every hours. The system achieved a data acquisition success rate of 99.93%, demonstrating high reliability. Additionally, we present raw data visualizations and discuss the device's ability to measure wind speed and direction in all three dimensions. These findings support the potential application of 3D anemometer devices in understanding and monitoring ecological processes involving changes in carbon dioxide in the environment. Although this initial test focused on raw sensor data, future work will include direct comparisons with state-of-the-art 3D anemometers and demonstration of its application in eddy covariance measurements The results indicate that this low-cost solution holds promise for practical use in environmental monitoring and agricultural applications.
The application of a low-cost microcomputer logger with pressure-temperature based sensor for coastal observations: A preliminary study M Batubara, J Risandi, A Sufyan, A Pamungkas, K S Wardhani, W Hendriyono, S Husrin, Y Ulumuddin, R Hidayat, Handrio, A Ulvan, Muhajirin, F Alfahmi Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2024 Nearshore hydrodynamics, such as water level fluctuations, field observations play a crucial role in understanding and monitoring the dynamics of the coastal region. The observed parameters provide insight into oceanographic processes, climate change impacts, and the behavior of marine ecosystems that could be valuable for coastal management and infrastructure development planning. Most of the available hydrodynamic loggers are provided by companies with relatively high prices. Due to limited budgets, many areas including Indonesia waters, have limited hydrodynamic observation data. In this paper, we presented a prototype of a simple (DIY-Do It Yourself) and low-cost water level logger with a microcomputer that could be applied in coastal regions. The system consists of a pressure-based sensor to detect water level fluctuations, a temperature sensor, a single-board microcomputer and data logger, and a power supply with different sampling frequencies for various coastal applications. The result showed the ability of the microcomputer system to measure high-resolution water levels and temperatures applicable for non-directional waves, tides and non-tides observations, and ecological monitoring. The microcomputer’s low power consumption makes it suitable for long-term coastal observations, even in remote or battery-powered applications. The body of the logger is designed from PVC-nylon with sensors made from waterproof and corrosion-free materials to ensure its applicability for coastal monitoring. Moreover, the flexibility of the microcomputer system allows for customization and adaptation to specific research requirements at relatively affordable prices.

Combined centralised and distributed mechanism for utilisation of node association in broadband wireless network A Ulvan, M Ulvan, H Pranoto Iop Conference Series Materials Science and Engineering, 2018 Mobile broadband wireless access system has the stations that might be fixed, nomadic or mobile. Regarding the mobility, the node association procedure is critical for network entry as well as network re-entry during handover. The flexibility and utilisation of MAC protocols scheduling have an important role. The standard provides the Partition Scheme as the scheduling mechanism which separates the allocation of minislots for scheduling. However, minislots cannot be flexibly reserved for centralised and distributed scheduling. In this paper we analysed the scheduling mechanism to improve the utilisation of minislots allocation during the exchange of MAC massages. The centralised and distributed scheduling is implemented in some topology scenarios. The result shows the proposed mechanism has better performance for node association than partition scheme.
