    Piper acutifolium Ruiz & Pav is known as “matico” and belongs to the Piperaceae family, and in Peru it is traditionally used as an infusion or decoction to ameliorate wound healings or ulcers. In this study, the aim was to investigate the volatile components, the antioxidant profile, and the phytotoxic activity of the essential oil (EO) of P. acutifolium from Peru. To identify the phytoconstituents, the EO was injected into a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to obtain the chemical profile of the volatile components, followed by the antioxidant activity carried out by the reaction with three organic radicals (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH); 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline)-6- sulfonic acid (ABTS); ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP)). Finally, the phytotoxic capabilities of the EO were tested on two model plants, Lactuca sativa seeds and Allium cepa bulbs. As a result, the analysis identified α-phellandrene as its main volatile chemical at 38.18%, followed by β-myrcene (29.48%) and β-phellandrene (21.88%). Regarding the antioxidant profile, the half inhibitory concentration (IC50) in DPPH was 160.12 ± 0.30 µg/mL, for ABTS it was 138.10 ± 0.06 µg/mL and finally in FRAP it was 450.10 ± 0.05 µg/mL. The phytotoxic activity demonstrated that the EO had high activity at 5% and 10% against L. sativa seed germination, the inhibition of root length, and hypocotyl length. Additionally, in A. cepa bulbs, the inhibition root length was obtained at 10%, both comparable to glyphosate, which was used as a positive control. The molecular docking on 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) revealed that α-phellandrene had −5.8 kcal/mol, being near to glyphosate at −6.3 kcal/mol. The conclusion shows that the EO of P. acutifolium presented antioxidant and phytotoxic activity and might be useful as a bioherbicide in the future.

    En la actualidad, la industria farmacéutica es un sector industrial, empresarial y comercial de los más rentables a nivel global, cuyo crecimiento se debe a la interacción con la globalización y a la versatilidad que esta ha tenido a la hora de integrarse a los mercados globales. En su evolución histórica ha pasado de catalogar los beneficios de diversas sustancias químicas encontradas en las plantas, hasta llegar a definir y determinar los alcances de la práctica médica. No obstante, la lógica mercantil ha llevado a la fusión de diversas farmacéuticas, cuya finalidad es impulsar la economía, los monopolios y oligopolios, en detrimento de la salud poblacional, que es determinada por los niveles de accesibilidad económica de los países, lo que supone dar preferencias al acceso de medicamentos al Norte Global, ocasionando la ampliación de las asimetrías sociales en los países periféricos. Con esto se desarticula el derecho de la salud, lo que indica la urgencia de devolver el lado humano a esta industria, repensar sus objetivos y dimensionarla desde una perspectiva ética y crítica. - Currently, the pharmaceutical industry is one of the most profitable industrial, business and commercial sectors at a global level, whose growth is due to interaction with globalization and the versatility it has had when it comes to integrating into global markets. In its historical evolution, it has gone from cataloging the benefits of various chemical substances found in plants, to defining and determining the scope of medical practice. However, commercial logic has led to the merger of various pharmaceutical companies, whose purpose is to boost the economy, monopolies and oligopolies, to the detriment of population health, which is determined by the levels of economic accessibility of the countries, which means give preferences to the access of medicines to the Global North, causing the widening of social asymmetries in peripheral countries. With this, the right to health is dismantled, which indicates the urgency of returning the human side to this industry, rethinking its objectives and dimensioning it from an ethical and critical perspective.
  • Solar photovoltaic technology in isolated rural communities in Latin America and the Caribbean

    The main characteristics of photovoltaic (PV) energy and its current development in Latin American and Caribbean countries (LAC); its impact on the electrification of homes, health institutions, and schools in isolated or difficult-to-access communities; and, the advantages thereof are presented and discussed by replacing the use of traditional fuels such as firewood and kerosene in order to improve inhabitants ’health as well as reducing CO2 emissions. Countries like Nicaragua, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile stand out for their growing PV energy development in the region. A case study of the electrification process by PV systems shows very positive changes are manifested in terms of improving the quality of life of the inhabitants, and especially their physical and mental health state. In addition, CO2 emission reductions from electrifying 216 houses in the nine communities reach an annual amount of 2,164.19 t/yr, reducing firewood consumption by 2,123.39 t/yr and kerosene consumption by 40.80 t/yr However, LAC countries must adopt laws and regulations that regulate the use of PV energy, with an emphasis on recycling systems at the end of their life cycle.

    El artículo explora los ejes fundamentales que, en la actualidad, convergen para la necesaria preservación de la naturaleza y la humanidad. Los enunciados filosóficos contenidos en esta reflexión cobran vigencia a la hora de articular los códigos éticos con el avance de la ciencia y, al mismo tiempo, educar a través de un sistema axiológico que conduzca al desarrollo humano sostenible. En este orden de ideas, se señala cómo el progreso occidental ha conducido a eventos catastróficos para la vida en el planeta, aunado al uso desmedido de la ciencia, sin ningún criterio ético que regule sus acciones. No obstante, producto de la reflexión moral de los últimos tiempos, de las voces de diversos colectivos sociales, las mejoras científicas han sido cuestionadas y encaminadas en función de producción de conocimientos que permitan desplegar positivamente la actividad humana sobre la naturaleza y sobre la sociedad, atendiendo que, para hacer esto posible, es necesario de la conjunción de la ética, ciencia y educación, para encaminar al progreso en términos de sustentabilidad.

    Afrontar el deterioro medioambiental, es una tarea ineludible en la actualidad. Representa el reconocimiento de siglos de abuso sobre la naturaleza, que han derivado en daños irreparables sobre el planeta, así como en el quiebre en las relaciones armónicas hombre-medioambiente. Por esta razón, enfocados en una perspectiva crítica e interdisciplinar, el trabajo analiza las diversas estrategias medioambientales planteadas para la sustentabilidad, articulándolas a diversos factores filosóficos, éticos, educativos, económicos, que inciden positivamente sobre diversas latitudes del planeta, en especial sobre América Latina. Este hecho lleva a postular la implementación de acciones mancomunadas a nivel político, económico, público, privado, social, que frenen los impactos negativos de las acciones humanas sobre la naturaleza. El método empleado para la elaboración del trabajo es el hermenéutico-documental. Se concluye en la importancia que tiene la filosofía, la educación y la ética ecológica en las estrategias empleadas para la protección del medioambiente y de las generaciones futuras.
  • Vaccination against COVID-19 in Pregnant Women: Bioethical Dilemmas about its Implementation

    El artículo explora la dimensión bioética del proceso de vacunación para el COVID-19 en mujeres embarazadas. Para lograr este objetivo, se consideran los siguientes aspectos: 1) Los antecedentes históricos de la inmunización, rescatando la importancia de los trabajos de Wortley, Jenner, Pasteur, entre otros. 2) Los dilemas surgidos en torno a la práctica de la vacunación, entre los que destacan la creciente mercantilización de la industria farmacéutica, articulándose a un proyecto macro de globalización y exclusión social. No obstante, en medio de esta arremetida del modelo económico contemporáneo, surgen planteamientos clave para resguardar el derecho a la vida y la protección de la dignidad humana, como la Declaración Universal de la Bioética y los Derechos Humanos propuesta por la UNESCO en el año 2005. 3) Las diversas posturas obstétricas y éticas consideradas para el uso de vacunas en mujeres embarazadas. 4) Las disyuntivas suscitadas a partir de la implementación de vacunas para el COVID-19 sobre mujeres en estado de gravidez, no teniendo aún la suficiente documentación científica para conocer los efectos adversos a futuro. Se concluye en la necesidad de evaluar cada caso en particular antes de tomar una decisión concerniente a la inmunización de la mujer en medio de la pandemia, considerando, previamente, la salud como derecho humano fundamental y el derecho a la información, como medio para tomar una decisión acertada en lo relacionado al tema.
  • Patents as Business Strategies: Human Rights in the Pharmaceutical Market

    El artículo, desarrollado bajo un enfoque diacrónico-racionalista, analiza la interconexión existente entre las patentes farmacéuticas y los derechos humanos en el contexto actual. Para lograr tal fin, la investigación se centra en los siguientes aspectos: 1) La comercialización de recursos que podrían favorecer la salud pública. 2) Las sinergias que promueven la inversión mixta de capital público y privado para la distribución y uso eficaz de fármacos. 3) El papel de los derechos humanos en las prácticas de producción de bienes y servicios sanitarios. 4) Las estrategias de mercado que no violentan los derechos individuales y colectivos de la ciudadanía. Se concluye en la importancia de señalar el papel del Estado como ente regulador de las actividades comerciales sobre los aspectos que conciernen a la salud pública, además de indicar que las patentes farmacéuticas constituyen una oportunidad social para favorecer la salud, esto en la medida que se articulan esfuerzos con el Estado y con sectores sociales, para dar paso a la consolidación de los derechos humanos y la reivindicación de la dignidad de la vida.
  • Perceptions of self-medication of the population, during the covid-19 pandemic in Peru

    Background: Describe characteristics of self-medication of the population, in the context of the COVID 19 pandemic. Material and Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional survey with students in a major public Peruvian university. We measured perception of self-medication of the population, as well as characteristics, consequences, and associated factors. Results: A total of 274 students of Pharmacy and biochemistry filled in the questionnaire, 80.3% of which reported to know someone that self-medicated during the COVID-19 pandemic. 98.9 % of surveyed participants considered that the current pandemic increased self-medication practices in the population and that it occurred more frequently when people have symptoms associated with COVID-19 (65.4%). The medicines most frequently used were ivermectin (79.2%), azithromycin (71.2%) and hydroxychloroquine (38.7%). Conclusion: According to the surveyed participants, self-medication has increased in the general population during the COVID-19 pandemic. Strategies to prevent these practices are needed, as they could delay adequate medical care.
