Flora of Sinningia (Gesneriaceae) in the state of Paraná, Brazil Lucas Katsumi Rocha Hinoshita, Andrea Onofre de Araújo, Alain Chautems, Renato Goldenberg Rodriguesia, 2024 The genus Sinningia comprises about 80 species and can be recognized, among Gesneriaceae, by its herbaceous or sometimes subshrubby habit and tuberous, perennial structure at the base of the stem. This work is a taxonomic treatment of Sinningia in the state of Paraná. Descriptions, a dichotomous key, illustrations, and information about the distribution and phenological data on flowering and fruiting are provided. Sinningia is the largest genus of Gesneriaceae in the state of Paraná, where there are 18 species that occur mainly in rainforest, grasslands or Cerrado and are rupicolous, terrestrial, or epiphytic plants.
George Gardner’s enigmatic species Goyazia villosa (Gesneriaceae) finally rediscovered Maurício Figueira, Bianca Schindler, Andréa Onofre de Araujo, Alain Chautems, Mathieu Perret, et al. Phytokeys, 2024 Tapina villosa (Gesneriaceae) was published by George Gardner in 1842, based on material he collected in Serra de Natividade (Tocantins, Brazil) in 1840. The species is now recognized as Goyazia villosa (Gardner) R.A. Howard. Since Gardner’s travels in Central Brazil, this species had not been collected again and the taxon was considered as possibly extinct. After a long time, we report the discovery of two new populations of G. villosa in the municipality of Palmas and in the Estação Ecológica Serra Geral do Tocantins, ca. 200 and 100 km north of the Serra de Natividade, respectively. The newly collected materials allow us to better characterize the morphology and infer the phylogenetic placement of this poorly-known species. Here we demonstrate that G. villosa is closely related to G. rupicola in a clade including Goyazia and Mandirola species, and provide an updated description of the species, including field images, photographic plate, information on its distribution and habitat, and a taxonomic key for the species of Goyazia.
Brazilian Flora 2020: Leveraging the power of a collaborative scientific network Janaína Gomes‐da‐Silva, Fabiana L.R. Filardi, Maria Regina V. Barbosa, José Fernando A. Baumgratz, Carlos E.M. Bicudo, et al. Taxon, 2022 The shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of aworking list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world ’ s known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis , concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highlycollaborativeproject that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overviewof the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world ’ s most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “ scientific reductionism ” , with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora. A natural intergeneric hybrid of gesneriaceae from Brazil ANDRÉA ONOFRE DE ARAUJO, MAURO PEIXOTO, CINTIA NEVES DE SOUZA, EDUARDO CUSTÓDIO GASPARINO, JULIANA TOLEDO FARIA, et al. Phytotaxa, 2021 A natural hybrid between Goyazia and Mandirola (Gloxiniinae, Gesneriaceae) from Cerrado (Brazil) is here described, supported by pollen morphology, cytological data and morphological characters. The microsporogenesis of Mandirola hirsuta and that of the hybrid were analyzed in order to evaluate the cytogenetic characteristics. The haploid chromosome numbers observed were n = 12 for M. hirsuta and n = 11, 13, 16 and 26 for the hybrid. Structural abnormalities (monads, dyads, triads and micronuclei) were observed at the final of the hybrid’s meiosis. High viability rates of the pollen were recorded for Goyazia and Mandirola (>90%) and low viability for the hybrid (34.7%). The pollen grains were acetolyzed, measured and photographed for pollen morphology analysis. Quantitative pollen data were analyzed through descriptive and multivariate statistics. The hybrid has intermediate pollen characteristics between G. petraea and M. hirsuta; it is more related to G. petraea by the measures of diameters and ectoapertures; it is more similar to M. hirsuta mainly regarding the microreticulum on the mesocolpium region. The hybrid and Mandirola share vegetative and flower size, while the colors of the hybrid are similar to Goyazia. Pollen morphology, cytological data and morphological characters brought clear evidence for the recognition of the intergeneric hybrid, which we named as Goydirola x punctata.
A new species and two new records of besleria (gesneriaceae) from Brazil Gabriel E. Ferreira, Andréa O. Araujo, Michael G. Hopkins, Alain Chautems Systematic Botany, 2019 —We describe and illustrate Besleria discreta, a new species from the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. The new species has been found in a mountainous area in the southern part of the state and can be recognized by leaf blades that are slightly bullate on the adaxial surface and a short corolla. We also report the occurrence of two species that have not previously been recorded in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil: Besleria concinna and Besleria neblinae. Data on morphology, ecology, distribution, and preliminary conservation status of the three taxa are also provided.
Brazilian flora 2020: Innovation and collaboration to meet target 1 of the global strategy for plant conservation (GSPC) R. Erkens Rodriguesia, 2018 The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was established by the Conference of Parties in 2002 to decrease the loss of plant diversity, reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable development. To achieve this overarching goal, the GSPC has established a series of targets, one of which is to ensure that plant diversity is well understood, so that it can be effectively conserved and used in a sustainable manner. Brazil hosts more than 46,000 species of plants, algae and fungi, representing one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth, and playing a key role in the GSPC. To meet the GSPC goals of Target 1 and facilitate access to plant diversity, Brazil committed to preparing the List of Species of the Brazilian Flora (2008-2015) and the Brazilian Flora 2020 (2016-present). Managing all the information associated with such great biodiversity has proven to be an extremely challenging task. Here, we synthesize the history of these projects, focusing on the multidisciplinary and collaborative approach adopted to develop and manage the inclusion of all the knowledge generated though digital information systems. We further describe the methods used, challenges faced, and strategies adopted, as well as summarize advances to date and prospects for completing the Brazilian flora in 2020.
Flora of the canga of the Serra dos Carajás, Pará, Brazil: Gesneriaceae Alain Chautems, Andréa Onofre de Araujo, Isabele Carvalho Maia Rodriguesia, 2018 Resumo Foram reconhecidas seis espécies, pertencentes a seis gêneros de Gesneriaceae nas formações de cangas da Serra de Carajás, Pará, Brasil: Diastema, Goyazia, Mandirola, Nautilocalyx, Phinaea e Sinningia. Não foi possível identificar a espécie do material que pertence a Diastema pela escassez de registros deste gênero no Brasil. Sinningia minima é endêmica das cangas da Serra dos Carajás, enquanto os outros táxons têm distribuição ampla e alcançam as Guianas, o noroeste da América do Sul ou o Cerrado no Brasil central. São apresentadas chave de identificação, descrições, ilustrações e distribuição geográfica das espécies, além de comentários gerais sobre os táxons.
