A multi-approach study on CO2 absorption in packed beds: Theoretical, experimental, and CFD perspectives on gas phase pulsation Chaturmukha Pattnaik, Ramesh Kumar, Moonis Ali Khan, Pallabi Pahari, Anirban Banik, Byong-Hun Jeon, Shirsendu Banerjee, Sankha Chakrabortty, Suraj K Tripathy Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, 2025 • Regular packed column for CO2-NaOH system was fabricated. • Mass transfer is increased by gas phase pulsing to increase CO 2 absorption. • Optimum pulsation amplitude, frequency, liquid flow rates impacts are analysed. • Glass spheres, Raschig rings, and Pall rings have been investigated under different situations. • Computational Fluid Dynamics was used to substantiate the results. This work seeks to improve CO 2 absorption efficiency in packed bed columns by substituting amine-based solvents with sodium hydroxide and implementing gas phase pulsation to enhance mass transfer coefficients. Experimental analysis and computational fluid dynamics modeling were employed to investigate the impact of pulsation on absorption efficiency under various conditions. Essential parameters comprised superficial liquid velocity (1.2–4.6 cm/s), pulsation frequency (0–10 Hz), amplitude (0–20 mm), and NaOH concentration (0.25 N to 2 N), while maintaining a constant superficial gas velocity of 120 cm/s and a solute gas concentration of 13 %. Three packing materials—glass spheres, ceramic Raschig rings, and ceramic Pall rings—were evaluated. The results demonstrated that ceramic Pall rings exhibited the greatest efficiency. Pulsation, namely at 9.06 Hz and 20 mm amplitude, enhanced the volumetric mass transfer coefficient by as much as 4.53 times for Pall rings. Increased column diameters (from 7.00 cm to 11.5 cm) enhanced performance. The findings show advancement of more efficient CO 2 absorption (by switching from chemical absorption using amine based solvents to classical chemical absorption using aqueous NaOH solution) for industrial applications, aiding climate change mitigation initiatives.
Two-Phase Crude Oil-Water Flow Through Different Pipes: An Experimental Investigation Coupled with Computational Fluid Dynamics Approach Shirsendu Banerjee, Anirban Banik, Vinay Kumar Rajak, Tarun Kanti Bandyopadhyay, Jayato Nayak, Michał Jasinski, Ramesh Kumar, Byong-Hun Jeon, Masoom Raza Siddiqui, Moonis Ali Khan, Sankha Chakrabortty, Suraj K. Tripathy ACS Omega, 2024 The present study deals with two-phase non-Newtonian pseudoplastic crude oil and water flow inside horizontal pipes simulated by ANSYS. The study helps predict velocity and velocity profiles, as well as pressure drop during two-phase crude-oil-water flow, without complex calculations. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis will be very important in reducing the experimental cost and the effort of data acquisition. Three independent horizontal stainless steel pipes (SS-304) with inner diameters of 1 in., 1.5 in., and 2 in. were used to circulate crude oil with 5, 10, and 15% v/v water for simulation purposes. The entire length of the pipes, along with their surfaces, were insulated to reduce heat loss. A grid size of 221,365 was selected as the optimal grid. Two-phase flow phenomena, pressure drop calculations, shear stress on the walls, along with the rate of shear strain, and phase analysis were studied. Moreover, velocity changes from the wall to the center, causing a velocity gradient and shear strain rate, but at the center, no velocity variation (velocity gradient) was observed between the layers of the fluid. The precision of the simulation was investigated using three error parameters, such as mean square error, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, and RMSE-standard deviation of observation ratio. From the simulation, it was found that CFD analysis holds good agreement with experimental results. The uncertainty analysis demonstrated that our CFD model is helpful in predicting the rheological parameters very accurately. The study aids in identifying and predicting fluid flow phenomena inside horizontal straight pipes in a very effective way.
Bio-inspired approaches for a combined economic emission dispatch problem Pandian Vasant, Anirban Banik, J Joshua Thomas, Jose Antonio Marmolejo-Saucedo, Ugo Fiore, Gerhard-Wilhelm Weber Human Assisted Intelligent Computing Modelling Simulations and Applications, 2023 In chapter 3, economic load dispatch (ELD) and emission dispatch problems are optimized separately using particle swarm optimization, quantum-inspired particle swarm optimization, and quantum-inspired bat algorithm for the various numbers of units. Later, both objectives are assumed simultaneously as an optimization problem with multiple objectives. The emission dispatch problem is divided into three independent objectives to minimize SO2, NO<i>X</i> and CO2 emissions. Thus, the combined economic emission dispatch (CEED) problem is an optimization problem with four objectives. A unit-wise price penalty factor was assumed to change over all the targets into a single target. The idea is to attain a balanced trade-off between secured and profitable energy choices while maintaining a healthy and sound environment. The quantum computing phenomenon was integrated with swarm intelligence-based particle swarm optimization (PSO) and bat algorithm (BA) to make them computationally more powerful and robust. The results obtained from quantum-inspired bat algorithm (QBA) and quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) to solve the CEED problem contrasted with other existing techniques such as Lagrangian relaxation, PSO, and simulated annealing.
