Nanoenabled Systems for the Delivery of Curcumin as an Anticancer Agent Saswati Mishra, Sweta Priyadarshini Pradhan, Anindita Behera Targeted Nanotechnology Enhancing the Efficacy of Natural Anticancer Drug Therapies, 2025 At present, cancer is regarded as one of the major health problems that places a heavy financial burden on society and is known to be one of the primary causes of mortality as well. Although there are various conventional dosage forms for treating cancer, the incidence and fatality rates are still very high. Therefore, a more potent therapeutic strategy is urgently mandated to target the dreadful disease and effectively treat it. The various pharmacological uses of curcumin, an herbal drug derived from the Curcuma longa plant, have been extensively documented. The mechanism of action of curcumin as an anticancer drug in various malignancies is summarized in this chapter. Additionally, the benefits of using nanotechnology in developing curcumin formulations to overcome its drawbacks and broad application for cancer treatment have been covered in this chapter. The recent reports on clinical trial studies of curcumin and its nanoformulations in treating cancer are discussed.
Nanoenabled Delivery Systems for Epigallocatechin Gallate as an Anticancer Agent Sweta Priyadarshini Pradhan, Santwana Padhi, Anindita Behera, Pratap Kumar Sahu Targeted Nanotechnology Enhancing the Efficacy of Natural Anticancer Drug Therapies, 2025 Epigallocatechin gallate is an important polyphenolic compound derived from green tea extract, possessing several versatile, therapeutically potent activities. Anticancer activity of epigallocatechin gallate involves various mechanisms such as induction of cell apoptosis, inhibition of nuclear factor-κB, and increases in mitogen-activated protein kinase signalling pathways. However, it is reported to generate reactive oxygen species via autooxidation and exhibits prooxidant effects. The poor bioavailability and reduced stability limit the clinical applications of epigallocatechin gallate. Nano-drug delivery systems have been introduced to explore the efficacy and safety of epigallocatechin gallate. This chapter summarizes the mechanism of anticancer activity of epigallocatechin gallate and recent research progress on nano delivery systems of epigallocatechin gallate as an anticancer agent.
Antioxidant, Antidiabetic Study and Wastewater Remediation by Selenium Nanoparticles of Hesperidin Anindita Behera, Nishigandha Sa, Bijayee Bishnupriya Jena Chemistry and Biodiversity, 2025 Nanotechnology has opened several applications in engineering, waste management and biomedical science. Metal nanoparticles of inorganic metals have unique electrical, magnetic, optical and physicochemical properties, making them superior to bulk metals. Selenium nanoparticles are less toxic than inorganic selenium, which has a narrow therapeutic index and high toxicity. In this study, we synthesised selenium nanoparticles conjugated to hesperidin (HSP‐SeNPs) using a chemical reduction method and characterised them using different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The efficacy of the HSP‐SeNPs was assessed for biomedical applications and wastewater remediation through in vitro antioxidant (DPPH and ABTS) and antidiabetic studies (inhibition of α‐amylase, α‐glucosidase and xanthine oxidase). Some anionic azo dyes, cationic dyes and nitro compounds are included for photocatalytic and kinetic studies for their degradation and reduction. The antioxidant and antidiabetic activity of HSP‐SeNPs was found to be significant (p < 0.05) compared to standard and pure HSP. The degradation and reduction of organic pollutants (methyl orange, bromophenol blue, methylene blue and 4‐nitrophenol) were completed within 65, 70, 45 and 60 min, following first‐order kinetics with rate constants of 9.5 × 10−3/min, 8.3 × 10−3/min, 13.3 × 10−3/min and 7.6 × 10−3/min, respectively. The study concludes that HSP‐SeNPs can be utilised to manage various oxidative stress‐induced diseases and facilitate wastewater remediation.

Epithelial-mesenchymal dynamics in cancer: Role of signalling pathways, stromal interactions and natural therapies Iram Khan, Anindita Behera, Kamesh R. Babu, Faisal Rehman, Farah Rehan, Shraddha Manish Gupta, Siddharth Singh Admet and Dmpk, 2025 Background and purpose: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and its reverse process, mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET), play crucial roles in embryogenesis, tissue regeneration, and cancer progression. Dysregulation of EMT/MET pathways in cancer contributes to metastasis and drug resistance. Approach: This review discusses the signalling pathways that are correlated with EMT in cancer and investigates the therapeutic potential of naturally occurring compounds in modulating these processes. The intricate relationship between stromal cells, drug resistance, and EMT is discussed, highlighting the emerging role of MET in stabilizing distant metastasis. Additionally, the impact of p53 on EMT and its implications in cancer metastasis are discussed. The review also provides an overview of therapeutic molecules, both plant- and animal-derived, that regulate EMT, highlighting their potential in cancer treatment. Specifically, plant-based compounds from Atractylodes lancea, Dendrobium officinale, Panax ginseng and Platycodon grandiflorus, as well as animal-derived substances like bee venom and snake venom, are highlighted. Furthermore, marine-based compounds, including caprolactin C, laminaran sulfate, BFP-3, bryostatin 1, sinulariolide, manzamines, halichondrin B, eribulin and biemamides, exhibit significant anti-metastatic effects by targeting EMT-associated pathways. Conclusion: The diverse range of therapeutic molecules discussed in this review provides promising therapeutic avenues for developing targeted strategies against EMT in cancer.
