Structural and Thermal Analysis of Brake Disc with Various Composites Atharv Bahulekar, Shaunak Shiralkar, Amit Jomde, Sonal Shamkuwar, Prashant Patane, Tarang Shinde, Shahbaz Dandin SAE Technical Papers, 2024 <div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The essential aspect of an automobile is its braking system. Brakes absorb the kinetic energy of the rotating parts, i.e., wheels, and dissipate this energy into the surroundings in the form of heat. This entire process is quite complex, and the brake disc is subjected to extreme thermal and structural stresses along with deformation, which might damage the disc. This paper presents a structural and thermal analysis of an Audi Q3 brake disc using an ANSYS 2021-R1. The present brake disc is designed using SOLIDWORKS software. Composite materials are added in the ansys material library by adding their respective characteristics. The thermal analysis mainly focused on temperature variation and directional heat flux. The structural study was conducted to understand the stresses developed during braking and the deformations observed.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">Along with a comprehensive structural and thermal analysis, this work has also estimated the life of the brake disc, the factor of safety, and the real-time behavior of modern automobile brake discs under working conditions. A comprehensive performance analysis of gray cast iron and two different composites (silicon carbide-reinforced carbon fiber and silicon carbide-reinforced aluminum) was carried out structurally and thermally to understand their behavior in real-time. The numeric value of each parameter for each material is presented in tabular format to provide a comparative idea of materials’ performances. This paper compares the performance of different brake disk materials under the same real-time conditions. All considered materials were not present in the ansys library, so we have created new material in the ansys library by providing specific material properties.</div></div>
Failure Analysis of Cryogenically Treated and Gas Nitrided Die Steel in Rotating Bending Fatigue Tarang Shinde, Sachin Mutalikdesai, Amit Jomde, Sonal Shamkuwar SAE International Journal of Materials and Manufacturing, 2024 <div>AISI H13 hot work tool steel is commonly used for applications such as hot forging and hot extrusion in mechanical working operations that face thermal and mechanical stress fluctuations, leading to premature failures. Cryogenic treatment was applied for AISI H13 steel to improve the surface hardness and thereby fatigue resistance. This work involves failure analysis of H13 steel specimens subjected to cryogenic treatment and gas nitriding. The specimens were heated to 1020°C, oil quenched followed by double tempering at 550°C for 2 h, and subsequently, deep cryogenically treated at −185°C in the cryochamber. Gas nitriding was carried out for 24 h at 500°C for 200 μm case depth in NH3 surroundings. The specimens were subjected to rotating bending fatigue at constant amplitude loading at room temperature. Measurement of surface roughness, hardness, and microstructural analysis indicated improved fatigue life for cryogenically treated specimens as compared to gas nitride, which could be attributed to fine carbide precipitation accountable for the delayed crack initiation and propagation.</div>
Investigation on drying kinetics analysis of gooseberry slices dried under open sun Vijay Patel, K.B. Judal, Hitesh Panchal, Bharat Singh, Amit Jomde, Abhinav Kumar, Anand Patel, Rupal Jain, Kishor Kumar Sadasivuni Environmental Challenges, 2023 An experimental analysis of the drying behaviour of gooseberry slices dried in the open sun is described in this article. Gooseberries brought from the local market were cut approximately semi-circular in cross-section, with an average length of 20-25 mm and a thickness of 3-5 mm. Using the hot air dryer method, the moisture content (MC) of gooseberry slices in their initial condition was estimated to be 87.81% wet-basis. The drying data revealed a steady reduction in MC with time, indicating the lack of a consistent rate drying phase. To fit the drying data, ten mathematical models were used. The selected models were analyzed using a multi-regression methodology in an Excel-solver equation. The optimal drying model was chosen based on the values of the coefficient of determination (R2), reduced chi-square (χ2) and root mean square error (RMSE). The logarithmic model was chosen as the best drying model for open sun drying of gooseberry slices as it had the highest R2 (0.99758980) and the lowest values of χ2 (0.00017191) and RMSE (0.01255328) of all the models tested. Multi-regression analysis resulted in the development of a thin layer drying equation that can be used to forecast moisture ratio (MR) at a specific drying period. The estimated value of effective diffusivity was found to be within its value for various agro-products.
A case study on analyzing the performance of microplate heat exchanger using nanofluids at different flow rates and temperatures Nesakumar Dharmakkan, Periasamy Manikandan Srinivasan, Suresh Muthusamy, Amit Jomde, Sonal Shamkuwar, Chandrakant Sonawane, Kamal Sharma, Ali Jawad Alrubaie, A.S. El Shafay, Hitesh Panchal Case Studies in Thermal Engineering, 2023 A microplate heat exchanger is one of the most compact types of heat exchanger used for cooling systems, and not much research was carried out to study the performance of this type of heat exchanger with hybrid nanofluids. In this regard, the performance analysis of the microplate heat exchanger is carried out by estimating the convective heat transfer coefficient in terms of Nusselt number using a hybrid nanofluid. In current research work, Microplate heat exchangers tested using TiO2/ethylene glycol, ZnO/ethylene glycol nanofluids, and a hybrid nanofluid with varied nanoparticle volume fractions. Based on the results, it was found that the thermal conductivity of hybrid nanofluids and the overall heat transfer coefficient by applying hybrid nanofluids show better enhancement than nanofluids. The maximum thermal conductivity ratio between the hybrid nanofluid and the base fluid is 2.10. The maximum Nusselt number of 35.8 was observed for hybrid (TiO2–ZnO/ethylene glycol) at 50 °C and a volume fraction of 4%.

Experimental parametric analysis of vapour condenser for vacuum drying application Shweta Badhan, Aditya Bhat, Amit Jomde, Mandar Lele International Journal of Ambient Energy, 2022 The experimental parametric investigation on a vapour condenser under vacuum conditions for the vacuum drying application has been presented. The mixture of air-vapour and the non-condensates are extracted from the system using a vacuum condenser. Hence, the vapour's behaviour inside a condenser becomes a subject of study exposed to different operating conditions. In the current study, parameters considered are condenser pressure (20 and 70 mbar), inlet valve orifice diameter (10 and 8 mm), and the cooling water flow rate through the pipes (32 lpm and 16 lpm). The condensation rate increases with the shell pressure and seems to remain unaffected by the chilling water flow rates. The turbulence in the steam flow increases with the increase in the shell pressure. The fluids flowing through tubes at low-velocity experience smaller pressure drops and show low heat transfer coefficients. The reproducibility and repeatability of the tests are excellent.
