Identifying Academic Performance Patterns Using ML in Secondary School Students: A Subject-Based Pedagogical Approach Alejandro Corrales Barrera, Paul Sanmartin Mendoza C3 2025 IEEE Colombian Caribbean Conference, 2025 This paper presents a machine learningbased framework to identify academic performance patterns among secondary school students using a subject-area perspective aligned with national curricular guidelines. The study analyzes real data from 149 students (grades 6-9) across 15 subjects, grouped into six thematic areas-Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities, English, Expressive Education, and Technology. K-Means clustering and PCA were applied to uncover performance profiles, followed by Random Forest and Decision Tree classifiers to predict students' overall performance levels. Results revealed interdependencies between Humanities, Science, and English, enabling the identification of cognitive skill patterns that inform targeted pedagogical interventions. Random Forest achieved 97% accuracy, though the small dataset and class imbalance require cautious interpretation. This approach advances beyond generic performance metrics by emphasizing skill-sensitive insights and providing interpretable recommendations for personalized pedagogical strategies. Future work will incorporate cross-institutional datasets, ethics-compliant data practices, and validated assessment tools to strengthen generalizability and educational impact.
Unplugged Activities to Support Computational Thinking in Youth from Low-Income Backgrounds Hector Teran, Alejandro Corrales Barrera, Jimmy Garcia Leal, Laura Ocampo Cortez, Laura Vasquez, Luis Perez Peñata, Esteban Espitia Coba C3 2025 IEEE Colombian Caribbean Conference, 2025 Computational Thinking (CT) has emerged as a critical skill for addressing complex problems across multiple disciplines in the digital era. However, students from low-income backgrounds often face limited access to highquality computer science education, which exacerbates the digital divide. To address this challenge, unplugged activities offer a practical and inclusive approach to introducing CT concepts without requiring access to computers or the Internet. This study presents a contextualized implementation framework based on a cascading learning model: university students trained high school seniors, who, in turn, facilitated unplugged CT activities for primary school students. The initiative was applied in selected educational contexts with limited technological infrastructure. Preliminary qualitative observations indicate positive engagement and improved understanding of CT-related skills among participants. While comprehensive quantitative analyses are still ongoing, initial results suggest that unplugged activities can effectively complement efforts to reduce educational inequities. Future research will include the integration of formal assessment instruments to evaluate learning gains more robustly.
