Optimal Operation of Standalone DC Microgrids Considering Renewable and Load Uncertainties O. Yugeswar Reddy, J. Jithendranath, Ajoy Kumar Chakraborty IETE Journal of Research, 2024 The rapid growth and development in DC microgrids (DCmGs), led system-level operation and control to be reformed continuously imbibing constraints and concerns that improve system operational performance. Focusing only on islanded DCmGs, quite a literature/work has been attempted in various perspectives to solve energy management problems. In light of this aspect, an optimal operation/control of standalone DCmGs, composed of the droop-regulated dispatchable type distributed generators (DGs) considering generation cost, voltage deviation, and current-sharing objectives has been proposed. The proposed work includes the uncertainties in network variables such as load demand, wind, and solar power generations. The scenario-based analytical method has been employed for modeling the uncertainties stated. For optimal operation, the droop parameters were solved by means of the heuristic-based multi-objective optimization technique, Dragonfly Algorithm (DA). The proposed methodology has been implemented on modified 6-bus and 33-bus test systems operated as DCmGs. Furthermore, the applicability of the proposed approach has been presented for the case study with battery energy storage system (BESS) scheduled DCmG network operation on a 24-hour time horizon. The obtained results have been compared with other optimization algorithms to validate the accuracy of the proposed approach.
Reliability and efficiency enhancement of a radial distribution system through value-based auto-recloser placement and network remodelling Bratati Ghosh, Ajoy Kumar Chakraborty, Arup Ratan Bhowmik Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems, 2023 The electric distribution system (EDS) is prone to faults leading to power interruptions. The present energy market demands that electricity utilities invest more in different measures to improve the performance of the EDS. The approach proposed here details a composite dual-phased methodology to improve the reliability and efficiency of the power delivered by the EDS. In the first phase, the optimal allocation of auto-reclosers (AR) is undertaken by employing a newly formulated algorithm. The determination of the total number and location for AR placement is based on the economic analysis of two factors, i.e., AR investment-maintenance cost and total benefit earned in terms of reliability improvement due to AR placement. The analysis also takes into account the impact of power outages on different load types, the load growth rate, and the inflation rate. Further, to enhance the efficiency of the AR-incorporated EDS, the technique of Radial Distribution System Remodelling is employed in the second phase. This method searches for a radial configuration that delivers power at minimum line losses. These phases comprising complex combinatorial operations are aided by a fresh hybrid of the Sine Cosine Algorithm, Krill Herd Algorithm, and a genetic operator of Differential Evolution. The results obtained from its application on the IEEE 69-bus distribution test system prove the credibility of the suggested formulation.
A technique to boost Reliability and Efficiency of a Radial Distribution Network by considering the effect of Protective Devices and System Restructuring Bratati Ghosh, Ajoy Kumar Chakraborty, Arup Ratan Bhowmik E Prime Advances in Electrical Engineering Electronics and Energy, 2023 The capability to supply reliable and efficient electric power is essential for any healthy power distribution network. Achieving these desirable network performance criteria has always been a concern for electric power utility firms. A solution to resolving this concern is demonstrated in this paper with the aid of an operational technique, known as Distribution System Restructuring. In this technique, the topological arrangement of the flow of branch currents is varied by operating the available network switches in such a way that the desired objective is fulfilled keeping all the nodes energized in a radial configuration. The method exhibits how without further infrastructural investments the reliability and efficiency of the system can be improved at various load levels. This paper also showcases the effect of protective devices on system reliability. A detailed analysis is provided to assess the possible interruption duration caused due to a fault. This assessment is pivotal for reliability evaluation. The proposed methodology benefits from a novel optimization technique named Differential Evolution infused Krill Herd Sine Cosine Algorithm. The methodology is applied to the IEEE 33-node and the IEEE 69-node distribution network. The numerical results so obtained prove its potency to solve the problem. wherePLt and QLt are the active load and the reactive load connected at tth node respectively. And VNt is the voltage across tth node. All data analysed during this study are taken from these published articles-
Stability Constrained Optimal Operation of Standalone DC Microgrids Considering Load and Solar PV Uncertainties Yugeswar Reddy O, Jithendranath J, Ajoy Kumar Chakraborty, Josep M Guerrero IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2023 Operation and control dynamics of islanded DC microgrids (DC mGs) have received enormous interest recently in distribution system management. In this regard, research concern on droop-controlled distributed generations (DGs) integrated within the standalone DC mG is becoming more profound. This paper proposes an optimal operation of droop-controlled standalone DC mG with combined small-signal stability and economic-environment-related objectives. The proposed approach optimizes the principal eigenvalue that affects the system stability and two other objectives. An eigen value-based stability analysis for network configurations, with the possibility of its buses solely connected to either dispatchable DG or constant power load (CPL), is proposed. Moreover, uncertainties involved in mG network variables that originate due to the integration of solar PV generation with load consumption were considered and modelled with relevant probability characterization. A recent swarm-based intelligent technique (dragonfly algorithm) for optimization of droop parameters is adopted in the proposed approach. A unique bi/tri – objective combinations are solved, and obtained results are discussed. To show the adaptability of the proposed approach for any given DC mG network, a standalone 6-bus mG was adopted to verify the applicability. Furthermore, the time-domain simulations were carried out on a sample 3-bus DC mG to validate the proposed strategy.
Planning of EV Charging Station With Distribution Network Expansion Considering Traffic Congestion and Uncertainties Arnab Pal, Aniruddha Bhattacharya, Ajoy Kumar Chakraborty IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2023 Proper planning for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations along with the required expansion of the distribution network is essential for the continuous growth of EV and conventional loads. This paper proposes a realistic and sustainable solution for deciding the location and capacity of the EV fast-charging stations along with the optimal multistage expansion of the distribution network to cope with future load growth. An overlaid traffic network with a distribution network is taken for the realistic approach. EV user convenience factor and user happiness factor are proposed along with the distribution network energy loss for better planning of fast-charging stations. To get charged, the appropriate fast-charging station and its best route are decided through minimum energy consumption by the EVs, considering traffic congestion and distances. Up-gradation of lines, up-gradation of the substation, addition of new fast-charging station, allocation of DSTATCOM and allocation of renewable-based distributed generation are performed for distribution network expansion planning. The whole work is formulated in three layers with a sub-layer. Uncertainties of EV driving patterns, energy requirement, traffic congestion, load and renewable generation are undertaken by the 2m point estimation method. The solution is carried out along with validation using different metaheuristic methods and integer linear programming.
Allocation of PV Mounted EV Fast Charging Station in Superimposed System Considering Vehicle Flow Arnab Pal, Ajoy Kumar Chakraborty, Aniruddha Bhattacharya 2023 IEEE IAS Global Conference on Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Technologies Globconht 2023, 2023 The condition of global warming is in the alarming stage. Shortage of conventional fuel is also a worrying situation for energy crises. These issues in today's world lead to the acceptance of electric-based transportation systems. However, the power sector should be shifted towards renewable integration to support this solution. Electric vehicle (EV) is the modern transportation system to solve the issues related to pollutants emission and fossil fuel scarcity in the transportation sector. Solar photovoltaic (PV) is the most popular solution to generate power in eco-friendly way. In this paper, allocation of PV mounted EV fast charging stations is accomplished in a superimposed system to make a realistic approach. An overlaid road network is considered along with the distribution network. 24-hours dynamic EV flow and variable PV profile are considered. Minimization of energy loss of the distribution network is the main objective maintaining the necessary constraints. Genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are used to solve the optimization problem. The results show that optimal allocation of EV charging station keeps the energy loss minimum. Moreover, the use of PV as distributed generation helps to cut further energy loss and to increase the voltage profile of the distribution system.
Placement of electric vehicle charging station and solar distributed generation in distribution system considering uncertainties Arnab Pal, Aniruddha Bhattacharya, Ajoy Chakraborty Scientia Iranica, 2023 Electric vehicle penetration in the transport section is increasing and replacing the conventional fossil fuel based vehicles. Still, EV has not received success due to some limitations such as cost of the vehicle, battery capacity and availability of charging station. The availability of charging station depends on its geographical location. At the same time, location in the electrical network affects the energy loss and voltage deviation. Therefore, a road network of urban area overlapped with a 33-bus distribution network has been taken as test system for this work. Allocation of EV charging stations and photovoltaic energy resources as renewable distributed generation have been attempted simultaneously using 2-layer optimization. Differential Evolution and Harris Hawks Optimization techniques have been employed to solve the problem and the final results have been validated using eight other established optimization techniques. 2m point estimation method has been used to take care of uncertainties related to electric vehicles and PV. Monte-carlo simulation is also applied to cross verify the performance. The land cost, customer accessibility to charging station have been taken into account to allocate it at proper places. The whole work has been performed based on the 24-hrs dynamically varying electric vehicles flow and PV outputs.
