  • Use behaviour of academic social networking sites in research communication: a structural equation model
Abdul Baquee, Rathinam Sevukan, Sumeer Gul
    Online Information Review, 2024
PurposeThe current study seeks to investigate, why and how faculty members of Indian central universities are using academic social networking sites (ASNs) for research communication and information dissemination, as well as validate and update the results of previous scholarship in this area. To achieve this, the paper uses structural equation model (SEM).Design/methodology/approachA simple random sampling method was adopted. Online survey was conducted using a well-designed questionnaire circulated via email id among 3384 faculty members of Indian Central Universities. A SEM was designed and tested with International Business Machines (IBM) Amos. Apart from this, Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 22 and Microsoft Excel 2010 were also used for data screening and analysis.FindingsThe study explores that most of the respondents are in favour of using the ASNs/tools for their professional activities. The study also found that a large chunk of the respondents used ASNs tools during day time. Apart from it, more number of faculty members used ASNs in research work than general purpose. No significant differences were found among the disciplines in use behaviour of ASNs in scholarly communication. Three hypotheses have been accepted while two were rejected in this study.Research limitations/implicationsThe study was confined to the twelve central universities, and only 312 valid responses were taken into consideration in this study.Originality/valueThe paper demonstrates the faculty members’ use behaviour of ASNs in their research communication. The study also contributes new knowledge to methodological discussions as it is the first known study to employ SEM to interpret scholarly use of ASNs by faculty members of Indian central universities.
  • A Bibliometric Review of Academic Social Networking Sites (ASNSs) in Scholarly Communication: A Scientific Mapping based on Scopus Database

International Journal of Information Science and Management, 2023
Academic Social Networking Sites, such as Academia.Edu, ResearchGate, and Mendeley, have revolutionized both social interaction and scholarly communication by making it easier for researchers to collaborate and share their work. As a result of these web-based resources, individuals may now create online profiles, share published articles, and interact with other subject matter experts from across the world. A variety of keywords were used by researchers to gather data from Scopus. A 14-year period from 2007 through 2020 was used to assess the research publications. More than 700 publications were retrieved from 381 journals, including 688 original research articles and 63 review papers. Except for 2008, 2016, and 2017, it was concluded that positive growth was plainly seen from 2007 to 2020. In academic communication, the United States is the most productive country in terms of productive affiliation and country on ASNSs. In the case of institutional affiliation, Wuhan University in China is the most prolific. Using the Scopus database, this study provided a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of ASNSs in scholarly communication. In addition, it outlined the "5 Ps" for implementing ASNSs.
  • Perceived Use Behavior of Social Networking Sites Among the Healthcare Students in India

    Sage Open Nursing, 2023
Introduction The use of social networking sites (SNSs) is growing among higher education students, including healthcare students. Nonetheless, limited research has examined the perceived use behavior among healthcare students in developing countries such as India. Objective This study attempts to assess the use behavior of SNSs by undergraduate students in the fields of nursing and pharmacy in India through the lens of Connectivism and New Social Learning theories. Method The study used a Google form to collect data through an online questionnaire. A sample of 483 participants included 258 Bachelor of Science in Nursing students, 161 General Nursing and Midwifery students, and 64 Bachelor of Pharmacy students from various Indian nursing and pharmacy schools. Results The majority of the respondents prefer to use SNSs for several purposes such as watching academic videos on YouTube, sharing their ideas, thoughts, and current development in their respective fields through WhatsApp, getting job-related information from different Facebook pages, etc. A substantial number of nursing students believed that these SNSs help them build relationships with professionals across the country. At the same time, many students also indicated that extensive use of SNSs might cause sleep difficulties, data privacy concerns, and a lack of focus while studying. Conclusion To have an impact on how SNSs are used in healthcare education, more attention should be paid to build connectivism between educators and their students on social learning environment, which the findings of this study's suggestions could be put into practice.
  • Awareness, use and attitudes of the Indian higher educational institutions students about scholarly open access: an empirical analysis
Ishfaq Ahmad Palla, Arslan Sheikh, Abdul Baquee
    Library Management, 2022
PurposeOpen access is a new scholarly publishing model that has appeared in place of the commercial publishing model. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of awareness, use and attitudes of the Indian students in higher educational institutions about scholarly open access.Design/methodology/approachSurvey method was used in the study. The sample population of the study was 212 Indian students belonging to different higher educational institutions in India.FindingsThe results of the study reveal a gloomy picture about the open access (OA) awareness and use among Indian students. Unfamiliarity with the OA journals and high publication fee were the main obstacles for the students not to publish in OA journals. However, a majority of the students reported their willingness to publish in OA journals in future if the obstacles are removed. A very meager ratio of the respondents had published in OA journals so far. In addition, motivational factors for publishing in OA journals were also taken into consideration, and respondent's indicated winning research grants, great impact and higher citations as main factors to publish in OA journals.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is geographically limited to the students of the higher educational institutions located in India.Practical implicationsThis study will help to understand the involvement and behavior of the Indian students toward scholarly open access. The study will also guide what measures need to be taken in the take up of open access movement.Originality/valueInstitutional repositories appeared to be relatively a novel term for the respondents, and in order to get the citation advantages and higher visibility, librarians can make an effort to persuade students to publish their research work in open access journals and institutional/subject repositories. The study recommends that institutions need to take appropriate measures to inform students about the importance and overall benefits associated with using of OA platforms in their scholarly work.
  • Social Media Use in E-Learning amid COVID 19 Pandemic: Indian Students’ Perspective
Abu Elnasr E. Sobaih, Ishfaq Ahmad Palla, Abdul Baquee
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2022
As a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, most educational institutions shifted to online education. Students and faculty members in many public institutions, particularly those in developing countries, are hampered by the absence of formal online learning management systems. Responding to COVID-19, many institutions in developing countries adopted social media sites to maintain e-learning and sustain education process. The distinction between online and real-world communities is becoming increasingly narrow, especially among the younger generations who have grown up with social media at their fingertips. This research explores perspectives of higher education students in India regarding the use of social media for e-learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, an online questionnaire was directed to a sample of higher education students in India via a personal network. The results showed that students were more satisfied with their use of social media because of their perceptions of its ease of use and usefulness. The majority of the students are active on social media for 1–2 h daily (p < 0.01). YouTube was the platform of choice among all the respondents (n = 154; 36%). The results confirmed that students feel that social media websites have a significant positive impact on their overall academic performance (p < 0.01). Novel methods of teaching and learning are constantly being sought out by educators. The present moment is an opportunity to examine and analyze the theoretical benefits of social media technologies and consider their relative advantages for education through the use of technology’s ability to enhance student learning.

Fundamental functions of library: preservation cum conservation and access of the resources to its patrons on time. This study investigated the kinds of manuscripts available in this well-known library, and who are the users and what are the techniques incorporated by the library for preservation and conservation of manuscripts. A questionnaire was distributed among the seven library staff in manuscript section of Maulana Azad Library. Another questionnaire was distributed randomly among 80 research scholars from different departments of the University. Observation and interview methods were also entertained. The findings of the study are only limited to this library.
