Radiographic Morphometry of the Proximal Femur and Hip Joint in Spitz Breed Dogs: Establishing Breed-Specific Reference Values K. S. Kamalesh Kumar, Rohit Kumar, T. Sai Kumar, Aman Kumar Tiwari, Bhanu Pratap Singh, et al. Journal of Veterinary Medicine Series C Anatomia Histologia Embryologia, 2026 Variations in hip joint morphology are clinically important because they influence both the diagnosis of orthopaedic disease and the success of surgical interventions. Establishing breed‐ and gender‐specific reference values is therefore essential for understanding normal canine hip anatomy and its variations. The present study aimed to provide radiographic morphometric reference data for the proximal femur and acetabulum in healthy Spitz breed dogs. Sixty adult dogs (30 males, 30 females) underwent standardised ventrodorsal extended hip radiographs under general anaesthesia. Acetabular and femoral morphological parameters were measured, and mean ± SD values were compared between genders and between left and right sides. Most parameters showed no significant differences across groups; however, femoral length, femoral neck length, and right‐sided acetabular offset differed significantly between genders. Combined acetabular parameters (depth index, centre‐edge angle) also showed gender‐specific variation, whereas combined femoral parameters did not. These results provide the first comprehensive radiographic morphometric dataset for the Spitz breed and demonstrate subtle gender‐related differences with minimal left–right asymmetry. We hypothesise that these reference values will support future comparative morphometric studies and contribute to preclinical orthopaedic research, while offering a foundation for the potential development of breed‐specific surgical planning tools.
Comparison of haematological and haemodynamic alterations associated with lidocaine, bupivacaine, and ropivacaine epidural anaesthesia in dogs Mudasir Ahmad Shah, Bilal Ahmad Malla, Prakash Kinjavdekar, Aquil Mohmad, . Amarpal, et al. Letters in Animal Biology, 2025 Epidural anaesthesia is one among the most frequently used central neuraxial block techniques because of its simplicity and safety. This study aimed to assess the changes in haematological and haemodynamic parameters induced in dogs by epidurally administered lidocaine, bupivacaine, and ropivacaine together with dexmedetomidine in atropine-midazolam premedicated dogs subjected to elective ovariohysterectomy. A total of twenty-four adult dogs were allocated randomly (n=6) to 4 different groups, namely: A (dexmedetomidine), B (dexmedetomidine with lidocaine), C (dexmedetomidine with bupivacaine), and D (dexmedetomidine with ropivacaine). After a 10 minute premedication period, Dexmedetomidine @ 7 μg/kg, Lidocaine @ 4.4 mg/kg, Bupivacaine @ 2 mg/kg and Ropivacaine @ 2 mg/kg were dispensed into the epidural space. Different haematological and haemodynamic parameters were recorded during the study period. Haemoglobin levels showed a significant decline in Group B at the 30 and 90 minute with respect to baseline values. Packed cell volume, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts showed nonsignificant changes in all the groups relative to baseline. At 90 minutes, Group D exhibited a highly significant reduction (p < 0.05) in total leukocyte count compared to the other groups. Groups A, C and D exhibited significant variations in systolic, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure and haemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO2) at various time points with respect to the baseline values. It was concluded that combining dexmedetomidine with lignocaine for epidural administration does not lead to haematological or haemodynamic instability.
Stem Cell Exosomes for Osteoarthritis in Veterinary Medicine S. Amitha Banu, Khan Sharun, Rony S. Emmanuel, Merlin Mamachan, K. M. Manjusha, et al. Stem Cells International, 2025 Osteoarthritis (OA) is a growing health concern worldwide. This disease is a major concern in human and veterinary patients, especially in growing and geriatric individuals. The poor regenerative capacity of damaged cartilage affects the healing process. Currently, no effective treatment strategy exists that provides a complete cure. Despite several traditional and pharmacological treatments, none of them resulted in the repair and regeneration of cartilage tissue. Regenerative therapy has gained increasing attention in the treatment of OA as it is directly involved in the regenerative process of damaged cartilage. The mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have therapeutic potential in treating OA resulting from their paracrine action on host cells, mediated via cytokines, exosomes, growth factors, and extracellular matrix molecules. Even though no significant side effects are documented, cell‐based therapeutics could still present some risks. Exosomes, on the other hand, act primarily by channelizing the resident cells to restore the damaged cartilage and thus play an essential role in the treatment of OA. This review explores the regenerative efficacy of exosomes in managing OA in veterinary patients, elucidating their mechanisms of action and therapeutic potential. Recognizing the importance of comprehending exosomes and their mechanisms is crucial for developing safe and effective cell‐free therapeutics for OA. This paper aims to enhance our understanding of cell‐free regenerative strategies, paving the way for the development of innovative treatments for OA in veterinary medicine.
